EXCELLENT example of why rushing to flash firmware just because an update exists exhibits the pinnacle of stupidity and the apex of ignorance.

 

If enabling LN2 mode restores the feature without goofing up something else it will be OK overall. I always ran all of my Dark motherboards in LN2 mode 24/7 without issue. HOWEVER the idea of enabling LN2 mode freaks some people out enough that it could cause serious irreparable harm to Intel. The bottom line is if the new Core Ultra CPUs are so fragile this idiotic safeguard is necessary to avoid damaging them then they are not a good purchase decision. Having unlimited power limits should do absolutely nothing to the CPUs unless they have been designed to be fragile rather than resilient as Intel CPUs have always been famous for. They were always hard to kill, even if you were deliberately trying to.

 

Agreed, if it is a simple bios selection that is fine. If it goes the way of a "special" Bios only available to some and I have to track it down that is irritating but I'll manage. If it turns out to be a temperature detect feature enabled only, I will be pissed off.

I don't buy this explanation. K should mean fully unlocked even if it's on air cooling. If it's a warranty issue they should just sell it without one.

 

Maybe they are pulling it back on these but will allow it again on a further overpriced KS sku.

When we forget about what CPU we’re using, and we’re just working and doing things on the desktop running virtual machines, maybe minimizing games as well, the smoothness is definitely there on high core count Monolithic CPU’s that only have P-Cores available. 
 

After this experience, I truly wish Intel would go back to all P-Cores and monolithic chips. If they released a 10/20 chip with some crazy good IPC and massive cache size I would absolutely own one. 

 

This is exactly what I am experiencing. Especially with the Optane P5800X drive. Everything feels so smooth.

This is exactly what I am experiencing. Especially with the Optane P5800X drive. Everything feels so smooth. 

Absolutely WICKED!! Yeah I’m loving my Xeon 3175X and my ram capacity has been pure reliability with 192gigs. Which DDR5 did you go with? How high could you clock the 3465X daily? And just so everyone knows, this monstrously strong 3465X is the prior gen model 🤯so I’m absolutely impressed. Although, I think they are pretty similar honestly. This makes me want to go ahead and buy a W790 motherboard though. 😁

 

Also, that Sage is Octa channel right?

I ordered the TG heatspreader (I think @jaybee83 has one) to see how the temps using that compare with the Mycro Pro direct die block.

 

yeps, remembered correctly! its still unoptimized though, had been planning to shave down the plastic standoffs for proper cold plate contact, and now its a year later (damn, having a kid REALLY kicks you in the balls in terms of having time for hobbies lol).

anyways, planning to get me another one due to their improved manufacturing, and with 9950X3D around the corner, might as well do all that in combo with a fresh windows install and the 5090 🙂

MSI is one of the best! Good quality, reasonable prices. Good products. I always thought the Suprim X products were better than ROG stuff. I have this MSI 1KW baby PSU, it is pounded by a 4090 and a overclocked 28 core Xeon and (5) pumps. The thing gets really warm being that it’s always under a 400+ watt to over 1,000+ watts of load. And it holds up great without any weird noises. 🤣I am planning to add another though. My current CPU overclock is limited by the one PSU. So I’m gonna add another right beside this one.

I bought a Intel Optane P5800X 400GB SSD (U.2 form factor). It has the Dell EMC branding. Got it from eBay, it was brand new. Cost me $450 which is expensive but I'm using it as a boot drive. Thinking of going ASUS Hyper M.2 4x card for 4x NVMe drives RAID0 or RAID0+1 for my secondary drive. Right now I have SK Hynix 2TB P41 and a 16TB HDD + 10TB HDD (WD Red/WD Gold).

 

My motherboard has SlimSAS ports so I bought a SlimSAS to U.2 cable. It shows up in bios/windows as any ordinary NVMe drive. You can even get a M.2 to U.2 adapter as well. The P5800X is a PCIe 4.0 x4 drive, it's the last/fastest Optane drive made as far as I am aware. I only install OS/Apps on the Optane drive. Everything else will go to the other SSD. 

 

There's also the P1600X which is essentially the same thing running at PCIe 3.0 x4 instead. It also has the latest Optane memory as well.

Did you get the EVGA SR-3 motherboard? I was debating on going that + W-3175X early in the year but figured I'd wait and glad I did. I'm keeping my SR-2 build, the MB is awesome. 

 

Yes Sage is Octa-core. I went with Corsair WS DDR5 ECC RDIMM 128GB (8 x 16GB) DDR5 DRAM 5600MT/s CL40 Memory Kit. I'm running the XMP profile @ 5600Mhz for now which seems to be perfectly stable. Haven't really tried going higher than that yet. With 8-channels the bandwidth is already insane. 

 

Stock clocks I get around 58C max temps in CB R23 and around 43K score. The 55K score was at all core 4.1Ghz or 4.0Ghz (forgot which one). 

 

At 4.0/4.1Ghz I am hitting 82C temps so I'm already reaching the Noctua NH-U14S DX-4677 limit. I'm seeing 548W peak cpu power. This is all on stock voltage with no increases yet. I can probably daily this easily (especially since right now I only have 1 case fan lol). 

 

Case is Corsair 9000D and I plan to buy like 16 Noctua fans later to give it some airflow. Also might go water cooling with 2x480mm radiators at least. 

 

PSU is Corsair HX1500i. 

 

I got the CPU for less than half of its MSRP. That's kind of how it all started. It was used but it works fine. 

 

I had a license of Windows Server 2025 Datacenter so I thought, why not? LOL I'm surprised how similar they made it to the LTSC style builds. Audio was already active, didn't need to do too many registry edits. No MS Store either.

Yeah that’s a very strong system, I’m going to build a W790 or W890 next. These systems are really so much more fun than mainstream platforms. Makes you feel like you actually have something, or that’s the feeling I have anyways lol. HEDT is really just wicked. I did not get the EVGA SR3, I have a Dominus. It has been one of the easiest platforms to tune with world class stability though. The SR3 is nice and I love those, but a little limited with only (6) ram slots. So I was considering ram capacity and longevity etc. Apparently the Dominus Extreme and 3175X can actually support a lot more ram than their specs have them listed for. 
 

Your CPU was a good choice though, and that’s a good price. I think finding a good deal is what it’s all about, some people are asking too much for these chips even the used ones. I’m going to be looking for something similar to what you have though. Not quite sure if I want to go Quad channel or Octa channel like yours. 
 

keep us posted on some Aida 64 runs, and or any ram overclocking if you go that route. Nice temps as well!

If you got 34xx/35xx CPU definetely get the sage motherboard. I've never seen so many BIOS options ever in any other board. Also you get octa-channel. 

 

If you get the 24xx/25xx CPU then get a ASRock board for like $600. The Sage is $999, I got it for 949, but it was on sale for 899 recently. 

 

24xx/25xx has 64 lanes, 34xx/35xx has 112 lanes. I think it's worth going 34xx/35xx because every pcie slot is 5.0 x16 (except one @ x8 only because you get two M.2 PCIe 5.0 x4 slots). 

 

I don't think the wife would let me have a chiller in the living room LOL. But I do want to do a custom loop. 

 

I've only done a custom loop once, but I'm assuming having 4x 480mm radiators would still be beneficial over 2 x480mm radiators? Or does it reach a diminishing returns?

After the death of EVGA, MSI moved into my top slot and surprisingly Asrock is climbing quickly too. The MSI 1300w 12vhpwr PSU is crazy quiet. Then again, my EVGA 1600w P2 is crazy quiet and holding it down too.

You can start with just a single HWlabs GTX or GTR rad. I tested out a HWLabs 280MM GTX once that someone sent to me, and was absolutely blown away at how effective they are. Just one of these 240-280mm HWlab radiators does what two or three common brand (360mm) rads can do. 
 

The GTR is more optimized for louder higher RPM fans, so it will scale and cool slightly better if using some high RPM 2K+ fans. Whereas the GTX model is practically just as good, but better suited to 800-1800rpm fans, and going with faster RPM will not scale cooling ability anymore. All about what you need noise wise I think.
 

But since you have the new Corsair 9000 case, definitely (2-4) Hwlab 360’s or 420’s or 480’s would be pure insane case cooling which is what you’d want for such a system like this. Just know that a single HWlab 240-280mm can already effectively cool a overclocked 10900K+ overclocked 3090 Kingpin just as good as (3) 360mm EKWB SE classic rads. If one is not using some behemoth external radiator, or a big loud chiller, these radiators are really the only thing I would use if building inside of a case for absolute maximum cooling performance. 
 

If you are trying to save some money on loop cost, then really just one of these Hwlab 480 rads would do the trick, and you can add more later or never lol.

I was thinking of going Corsair Hydro XR7 480mm X2 along with their D5 pump/res combo and an EK water block since there's only like 2 water blocks for lga 4677. 

 

Looks like HWLabs is good too. Any recommendations for pump/res combo? If i went 2x480mm would a single pump/res combo be enough or would 2 be better? I was going to get the Corsair Hydro X hardline 14mm tubing along with the gold fitting pack but I'm all ears to what is good these days. 

 

I think 2x480mm radiators on top and 8 noctua fans should still be quiet enough and cool this thing better than the current air cooler easily. 

 

EDIT: Apparently the XR7 from Corsair is built by HWLabs (GTX Nemesis OEM). 

 

I'm also debating on whether I want to go hardline tubing this time and or just get soft tubing.

Everything feels snappy and smooth. Things load up instantly. Unzipping a file with hundreds of small files is fast. 

 

Restarting, windows update, etc is fast. 

 

So yes there is a noticeable difference, but most people probably can't justify the price per GB compared to a PCIe 5.0 or 4.0 NVMe ssd.

As an owner of an Optane 905P, I feel qualified to answer this question.

 

Depending on what you're doing and your setup, you may or may notnotice a difference.

 

If you use Optane with something like an i7 7700K, you probably won't notice a difference vs a standard m.2 SSD. If you are however using Optane with a recent platform (like 14th gen or current gen), you will definitely notice a significant difference. I currently have an Optane 905P installed in my system with a 10900K in it, and the difference is significant.

 

The first thing you'll notice is that the system feels more responsive. I can't assign this particular metric to a number, but it feels snappier vs using a standard SSD. For everyday usage, programs load significantly faster (provided your CPU isn't a bottleneck on load speeds). You can also open a ton of programs at once and the Optane drive will just blast through your file read requests. Optane also excels at small file copy speeds due to the much faster random write speeds vs a standard SSD. Optane also doesn't slow down as it fills up vs a standard SSD, so you can load these babies to the brim and not see a decrease in drive performance.

 

The most major difference I've noticed is in file search speed. When doing development for my job, I osmetimes have to look for particular files. With Optane, I can search the root directory of a Unity project using windows explorer file search (mind you, our projects are pretty big for VR games, at least 30 GB or larger for the repository), and my 905P will have already returned a bunch of results after I snap my fingers (it's still searching, but at least it found a few files right off the bat). File searching is so much faster on an Optane drive. If I were to perform this same task on a standard SSD, it would take a bit before the file search returned any results, even the initial few.

 

For my development workloads, code compiles faster, asset imports complete significantly faster, and builds complete a bit faster. For gaming, games load faster, especially open world ones. Any game that does heavy asset streaming also has loading microstutters gone. Both development workloads and game load speeds will continue to scale with ever faster CPUs on Optane whereas they've already kinda hit a wall with standard SSDs.

 

Oh yeah, also hibernate and wake from hibernate is far faster on Optane vs a standard SSD. So Is file zipping/unzipping.

 

So overall, Optane is a must as a boot drive if you want the snappiest experience, or if you're a developer like me, or just want the best game load times, or if you do tons of file operations (especially with small files), or if you want some combination of the 4. Optane benefits newer platforms far more than older ones as newer CPUs can really take advantage of the throughput of Optane random read and write speeds.
