NewEgg is now only offering $1350 for 4090 trade-ins and I don't think you can use trade-in to have in-store credit to use later. It has to be tied to a GPU purchase (literal trade-in) and the funds applied much like a post-sale partial refund or rebate after they receive and validate your trade-in. So, the idea of having the cash to pay for a X870E Apex from the previous trade-in credit doesn't look like it will work.

 

As soon as 5090 releases I bet they will be offering only $800 or $1,000 trade-in value for a 4090.

Made some progress with the 7945HX3D. I have it running at 1.35V now and copied the XMP profile primary timings and calculated a few others based on guides I have found. I am unsure how SODIMM effects what A die can do but at least this is 1DPC.

$2800 without tax? I will wait and see. With the Norwegian tax I see $3500 on my calculator. Add a block on top  and you'll see close to $4000. That's  a lot of money for more fake frames. And this is not even for the flagship models.

Maybe Nvidia will try make a shortage to push up the ASP. And the new 32GBb cards is good for AI work. Nvidia know their drill.

Lots of money for something that will be obsolete in a very short time, or displaced by a same-generation surprise SKU that suddenly moves your flagship GPU into the second fiddle chair. Not cool. Stepping up to pay for the best only to end up owning second best is no bueno. Maybe someday if Microcenter opens a Phoenix location where I can take back what I bought and apply the purchase price to an alternative.

yep, things are looking rough...latest rumours suggest initial supply will be super tight here in europe. but at least there were 7 reputable shops listed in germany that would get day 1 supply. i plan to register and prepare accounts on all of them and flip through them until i get one grabbed 😄

Laptops just keep pulling me back in. I can't get away from them because the allure of portability is impossible to resist. Having said that, I also don't have a tolerance for laptops that are not modular, so I wouldn't buy such machines anyway. It takes something special like this to pique my interest, and it piques my interest HARD!

 

Let's hope we get a proper 18-19 inch DTR with that modularity + external water cooling. That'll be fun for benchmarks and awesome for max performance in an ultraportable form factor (yes I consider 18 inch laptops ultraportable). Speaking of which, I'll need that special water cooling heatsink for my X170 to perform an upgrade to the RTX 3080. That should be interesting.

Yep. same here - I want portability, stationary (sadly) won't do it for me.

That is indeed a Tongfang and Prema mods their bios with excellent results.

The problem is that they complicated the architecture even further. First P-Cores/E-Cores, now chiplets and E-Cores grouped into separate cache NuMA-like clusters. Looks like a mess but interestingly even Ubuntu was outperforming Wingross 11 back in October.

Any word on an Extreme/KS variant of Ultra 200?

 

My 13900K failed to even boot after mobo upgrade to microcode 0x12b (facepalm). Running on 12900KS now but it's noticeably slower, so kind of weighing my options (also no time for a mobo upgrade job RN): 

• 13900KS and pray  (£450)
• 14900KS and pray  (£680)
• AMD (would need to lose space to a TB card) - not sure £1100-1200 all in + TB card
• Ultra 285 - not sure £1100-1200 all in
• Wait for Ultra 295

Hmmm. Maybe Tomshardware have the correct answers? Also Paul Alcorn can't see what Intel see. Is slower an improvement bro @Mr. Fox? Is less more nowadays?😎

Dufus is right again. I wonder if NVIDIA designed the 5090 FE in such an absurd manner deliberately so PC enthusiasts and gamers would avoid the FE?

gotta admit, it does look quite sleek. but boy do i wonder how much its keeping back the 5090 in terms of being able to stretch its legs with a proper OC...

External appearance is sleek, yes. The main PCB+PCIe daughterboard and cable-connected I/O are laughably dumb and it looks like a real nightmare in my opinion. I think he said it best when it said to look at it as a workstation GPU.

Yeah, he's not wrong. He also noted going out and snagging a Suprim or Astral for the cooling capacity. I do find myself agreeing with him more often than not.

 

I think those who want to block or push 5090 to the extreme are no longer (if they ever were) a concern to Nvidia. It's clearly evident by how they keep trying to lock it down in every way possible from having full control over power and voltage. 😞

 

This is a sleek, compact, well engineered card targeting workstation and sff enthusiasts along with gamers and those who want to slap it in and play their games or get their workflows done.

 

The FE is not for you and vice versa. 🙂

Guess we'll find out on review day, but whether it is the FE or the Suprim/Astral, that 575w of heat has to go somewhere and that is right in your case unless you block any of them or get an AIO variant.

 

I run my case completely open now with the back, front and side panels all removed so an AIO model is no longer needed, but my main concern is going to be 575w worth of heat potentially venting into my small computer room.

 

When I ran a 3090ti, I had to have the door open or the room because a sauna relatively quick. The amount of heat that 450w+ under load chunker threw off was insane. I used to sometimes just hold my hand over it and feel that heat pulsing off of it.

 

That's where we are again with the 5090....

 

Even if the FE cools like an engineering marvel, it will be blowing flames like a dragon from Game of Thrones. Might as well have a "Dracarys" edition on these things.

same rule of thumb as in investing: diversify. check on as many potential shops as possible to maximize your chances. and dont give up after just 30 minutes, most ppl do exactly that. keep at it!

 

supply situation looks dire for the 5090 though, comparable if not worse than the 3090 / 3090 Ti launch, ugh....

Best Buy probably will not sell any online. You probably need to go to a Best Buy or Microcenter, arrive early and walk out with one if there are not too many ahead of you in line. Don't forget that Provantage and B&H Photo could be good options for online. I really cringe at the thought of an FE. You want an FE even though they are a multi-piece nightmare contraption. I bet it is going to run hot and loud with that cooler on it.

I was told BestBuy is only doing online. I may do Microcenter. But they are 2.5 hours away. So 5 hour round trip.  
 

Was hoping to save the long journey and order online.

Have multiple windows open, no restrictions/policies in place helps, verify your accounts and everything are up to date. Right before the drops, log out and log back in so you won't need to re-verify.

 

Use the BB app. It works quicker and cleaner than the website I've found numerous times.

 

I plan on having BB on the phone going along with Newegg, Provantage and B&H open at the ready. I will toss any and all I can get into carts and the first one to check out and confirm (FE, Suprim, Astral) wins!

 

Part of me wants to go to MC along with having BB and a few windows open on my phone but I'm not THAT worried if I don't get one. I rarely, if ever, score one launch day and I'm ok with that.

 

It's only rumors so far, but the 9070XT might drop before the 5090 and that would be fantastic to snag one of those and get it in for some quick testing, but either way you look at it, reviews are going to tell us everything we need.

 

Pros of the FE are the segmented daughter board approach and size. less chance of a PCB crack and if there is, only need to replace the slot connector. Cons are if you want to block it or really push it.

 

Stock for stock, they're all going to run pretty close to each other so any and all will game like a champ.
