I would be curious to see why it was an open box return and wouldn't be surprised if that was the reason. We can't be the only tech enthusiasts who immediately enable the enhanced BIOS and go to town on it. 🙂 Funny thing is I never even considered them but I've used them in the past to get various hard to find CPUs and motherboards. Did the upgrade to LM from PTM yield meaningful results or was the cooling system a limitation? I could see LM at least helping with idle ramp ups and low load fan noise though. I am like you and prefer my laptops at QHD so hopefully a display swap is a possibility. That is really odd with the quality level tamped down to a 1 it still has an odd bit of lag even frame locked to ~119fps in GFE/NVCPL? Actually nothing I have tried so far has made it stable under a stress test at 6000 or higher. VSOC up to 1.2v, VDDIO/VDD/VDDQ up to 1.3v, UCLK+FCLK at 1500, multiple memory kits (both 2x16GB Hynix A-die). FCLK is stable at 2000 with VSOC at 1.1v. If I drop to 5800 stress tests are stable. Too bad its BGA or I would be hunting down a replacement chip. Unless I am missing an important voltage that is not being configured correctly automatically by the bios. Its really odd that I can boot at 7600 but 6000 is not stable. I do not think LM helps performance unless it had a bad PTM paste job, because the CPU is limited to 145W solo or up to 85W in combined loads. Fan noise could be improved though for sure. Regarding the screen swap I found a complete used display assembly from a Vector A18 with the 240hz QHD 1600p IPS panel which is perfect. Even better it has no lid logo RGB so that is one thing that will no longer be reset to a rainbow effect depending on how Steelseries software is feeling that day. The whole unit used was only $185 including tax so not a bad deal at all and very easy to swap the UHD assembly back if the laptop needs to go in for a warranty repair. 1 MSI Raider A18 - 9955HX3D, 2x16GB Kingston Fury DDR5-6000 CL38, 4TB WD SN8100, RTX 5090 mobile, 18.0 inch UHD+ 120hz miniLED, Windows 11 Enterprise LTSC

EPDM is definitely the way to go. I think brand new clear tubing looks nicer but EPDM looks good and looks exactly the same whether it is new or old and I think it is considerably more durable. Plasticizers and degradation are a non-issue. I can tell you right now the silicon sample on the core side of things is better than my 4585PX and 9950X. The cores need less voltage for a manual overclock at any given core ratio. The memory controller is weaker than both of them. It requires looser timings to run 8000. Cinebench scores are lower and some things actually feel like they are slower at equivalent clock speeds. There is a small latency penalty with 3D v-cached CPUs and I think these flaws are all inherent to 3D v-cached Ryzen CPUs. I haven't done any gaming with it yet but I think I'm going to find that I gained nothing and probably lost a little ground in terms of overclocking capabilities. As far 9950X3D2 samples are concerned, I think this one is probably better than average. I may find my opinion will change after I spend more time with it and find out what it likes and what it doesn't. I may not be doing what it likes yet. I absolutely do not like the 200 MHz lower PBO boost clock but if I can get the thing to do a substantially better manual overclock I might forgive that because I don't really like PBO anyway. I have already decided that the Core Ultra 270K Plus is better than anything AMD has for sale. It performs better than anything AMD sells right now and costs substantially less than AMD's closest equivalent product. I had to loosen tCL, tRCDWR/RD, tRP, tRAS and tRC to get it stable at 8000. It might do better with GDM enabled, but I don't really want to do that if I can help it. Definitely, the more I research, the more I am settled on EPDM. I need to locate that pump res combo you recommended I picked up for a good deal from PPC and res and fittings. I finally locked down on a new shelf to hold a large swath of my parts and boxes as the other room is full. Wife is giving me funny looks now..... 🤣 I like that you've tested each variant now with no X3D, 1xCCD X3D, 2xCCD X3D to see the progression (or regression) in regards to overclocking capability with X3D and peak stock clocks coming into play. I came to the same conclusion, outside of X3D beneficial games, that the 270k is actually one of my favorite CPUs on every level. Unfortunately for me, as always, Fallout 76 disproportionately loves X3D cache....scarily so even at 4k. I've tested and retested extensively the last 3 years and that massive chasm remains across the 14900k and 270k. Do you think the IMC on the 9950X3D2 you have is weaker than your other chips? 17 hours ago, tps3443 said: Yeah my Astral wasn’t even that great of a deal either lol. At the time they were brand new for $4,329.99 + tax and they had a single open box for like $3,779 or $3,889 + tax in the Best Buy store, I’m forgetting exactly how much it was. The box was kind of ripped a little, coil whine is not as quiet as my 5090 FE was (That one had a tiny bit, but you had to like put your ear against it to hear it, 1.2KW per limit certainly amplified it just a little bit) But the quietest GPU I ever owned was probably the 5080 Astral OC, it did not make any sound under load, even with your ear right against it lol. The 5090 Astral isn’t bad at all though but it makes a deep buzz if you lean in and try to listen to it. You won’t hear it in a closed case or anything though. Not a squeal or anything annoying at all which Is perfectly fine for me. I think most high end GPU’s will make a buzz under heavy load if you lean in close and listen to them. Too many check boxes these days to be super picky on GPU’s. Max Voltage, core overclocking ability, are 1% lows impacted with +3,000 memory OC, coil whine?, are the core and memory chips actually soldered on the board? lol, does it even work? lol. 😂 Unless something is making a high pitch squeal noise, I don’t care! Two prior products come to mind where I did care!!!. My Z590 Dark Kingpin motherboard, and EVGA power supplies lol. But yeah the Astral overclocks really well, and that’s what made me love it and decide to keep it. Excellent GPU. I’d probably long return my 9950X3D2 and Dark Hero X870 before that 5090 Astral goes anywhere!! Speaking of which that return period is coming up FAST on the AMD chip!! I may swap it out. Congratz on selling the HEDT rig over on OCN! Still a $1k+ difference now and I wouldn't rule out another price hike before we escape 2026. I've been testing my Windforce 5080 SFF back and forth against my 5090 in my main rig the last few days. I'm not unplugging the 5090 12vhpwr connector. I'm using the Corsair 1000w SFF instead externally to power the 5080 so swapping is quick and easy. 5090 is just a monster. WoW and even Fallout 76 keep the 5080 pegged at 99% outside of player heavy areas. Then again, there are many areas in WoW that keep the 5090 at 99% too even with a 175fps cap in place. As long as a GPU doesn't make that, deep seesaw screeching whine I can usually work with it. No GPU is truly silent under load and if I need to put my ear right next to it to hear it, to me that is effectively silent. Nothing, and I mean nothing, can touch that 3090FE whine I had. That was next level nauseating. Definitely keep the Astral. Still the most beautiful 5090 IMHO with that industrial slab look. I love the heatsink on that thang and prices are climbing and climbing. If I were you, I'd return the 9950X3D2 at a minimum to fish for a better sample or pick up a 9950X3D from Newegg which is on sale for $569.99 AND includes a free AIO or maybe see if @Mr. Fox wants to part with one of his samples OR return both the CPU and MB and see if @Talon wants to part with one of his 270k samples and go Intel. Of course going Intel you're going to want 8600+ capable G2 ram, cpu and MB at a minimum. If you want to stick with BB for their credit line, 270k is, oh, $600 cheaper than the 9950X3D2..... good deals on MBs and that helps compensate for memory costs. 15 hours ago, win32asmguy said: Actually nothing I have tried so far has made it stable under a stress test at 6000 or higher. Damn, that's not good news if it can't even do 6000. MSI only guarantees 5600 on that model so you can't even send it in for a swap. Might have to just tune around 5800 or run a dirty OC that's "good enough" for gaming but still a major bummer. Silicon lottery strikes again.... Still a damn good deal though on the price and I'm not sure 5800 vs 6000 will even make any meaningful difference in gaming and you can maybe tighten up the timings even more. Do a dirty mem OC test 5800 vs 6000->6400 in games and go "meh....." Nice snag on the entire hood assembly so a small silver lining.... ------------------------------------------------------------ "Progress" = ~10% uplift..... 3 Electrosoft Alpha: 9800X3D | Asus X870E Hero Crosshair | MSI Vanguard RTX 5090 OC | AC LF II 420 | TG 2x24GB 8200 @ 8000 tuned | Samsung 9100 Pro 2TB | EVGA 1600w P2 | Phanteks Ethroo Pro | Asus XG32UQDMS 32" QD-OLED Heath: i9-14900KS SP109 | AC LF III 360 | Asus Strix Z690 D4 | Gigabyte 9070XT Gaming OC Edition| 32GB DDR4 2x16GB B-Die 4000 | Samsung 980 1TB Pro | Antec Flux Pro | Alienware AW3225QF 32" OLED Electrosoft Mobile: Alienware Area-51 18 | 275HX | Nvidia RTX 5070ti | 32GB DDR5 6400 |Gen 5 2TB | 18" QHD | WiFi 7 MY EBAY STORE

Papusan Posted yesterday at 04:56 PM Posted yesterday at 04:56 PM Where many of the 5090 goes. To China. Do Jensen care? Nope. He have never cared about rules/ restrictions or where his products goes. Overpriced 5090s due shortage keep Nvidia's partners happy. Asus have raised their prices for the US Store... 5090 TUF just $4400 before any tax. And the Astral 5090 LC OC cost now $5029,99 in their Store or +$3000 above MSRP for the 5090 FE. This looking good. Nice. China sells servers with 288 water-cooled RTX 5090s, air conditioning, and their own power generator. The RTX 5090 is considered the most powerful GeForce graphics card for gaming, being around 30% faster than the previous generation RTX 4090. For some years now, China has faced limitations and restrictions imposed by the United States, preventing it from purchasing advanced AI hardware and graphics cards. For example, NVIDIA had to create cut-down versions of the RTX 4090 and RTX 5090, known as the RTX 4090D/5090D , the latter with a V2 version that represented yet another limitation. It's curious how, despite these restrictions, China continues to obtain these types of graphics cards by using third-party countries and exploiting this "gray area" of the market. Now we're seeing another use for these graphics cards: in China, they're selling servers inside shipping containers packed with RTX 5090 graphics cards. 1 1 "The Killer" ASUS Z790 Apex Encore | 14900KS | 4090 HOF + 20 other graphics cards | 32GB DDR5 | Be Quiet! It will be obsolete too soon to make it a smart buy. Kind of nutty when you think about it. I see Digital has dropped the price of that 270k down to $640 (or $655 PP FF shipped). Still not tempted atm as I am in the need of a major sell off of hardware to prepare for Nova with that lucious bllc (if it's anything like X3D, it is going to be a wrecking ball for Fallout 76 but we will see), but if there was ever a chance to snag a killer 270k for testing now would be it methinks.... Personally, I still think the problem with Nova Lake is even with superior SP ratings and silicon, we're just not seeing the insane clocks superior silicon provided with the likes of 13th and 14th gen. I'm only on an AIO, but 2x 265k and 270k all ended up at ~5.6ghz for me realistically. Even the poor first 265k SP77.... It gets close sometimes, but it still can't touch my SP109 14900ks in gaming. @Mr. Fox you delidded your 270k. Are you seeing appreciable gains in performance or does it hit a wall that isn't thermally and voltage related? I'd be lying if I said I wasn't tempted though and the sooner it sells is the sooner the temptation is removed 🤣 Best scenario is one of us picks it up so I can at least ask questions and see results. ------------------------------------------ 4 hours ago, tps3443 said: Id love to splurge on this. So I have to be smart. Smart play. These are but toys and fun things. Family always comes first. I still say you return the 9950X3D2 at the least and order another one or even step down to a 9850X3D unless you really want all those cores for gaming. Probably not a smart move, but most things we are passionate about produce behaviors that are not very intelligent. Too bad I already sent the delidder tool and heater back. This will drive me to sell the parts I had offered to @tps3443 to pay for it and fund the replacement motherboard, etc. I honestly have not had time to put either the delidded 270K or delidded 9950X3D2 through their paces to say definitive gains in performance were achieved, but the massive thermal improvements alone made it worth the effort in both cases. I've had too many competing interests consuming my time. I'm going to expect decent performance gains on the 270K. I'd not expect as much from AMD simply because things are so limited by design by AMD. But I would delid them both again in a heartbeat just for the thermal gains even if nothing changed on either one in terms of performance. Bare die is the only way to fly. tps3443 Posted 3 hours ago Posted 3 hours ago Hey @Mr. Fox I would buy your parts, but I actually bought my 9950X3D2 and Dark Hero and Ram with the BestBuy 0% store Credit Card. So, if I were to return it all, it just goes back to the card. I used the card because I was not sure if I was going to even like or keep the setup. So it was a way for me to give it a good run in and test it daily. It seems pretty solid, other than being a weaker sample. And, I still might return it all. If I do, I’ll maybe be going for a 270K Plus. But I have really Moved away from overclocking and XOC. I just play games when I have time. I’m so busy with buying junk cars these days. I pretty much just keep it simple man! Congrats on the binned 270K plus purchase! That is a very nice chip! This is a picture of my yard full of cars from a days work. 😂 1 1 13900KF

Putting the needs and concerns of your family first and the ability to provide for them takes precedent over anything else and you are making a good/right choice in doing that. I would be disappointed if you allowed any kind of hobby or fetish to draw your attention away from that duty. I only offered it in case you were interested and able. Since you are a friend I wanted you to have first crack at the stuff based on our recent communications about the CPU and memory overclocking experience you have had with it. If your main use of the PC for pleasure is gaming there is no point in returning what you have or buying a 270K Plus CPU and Z890 mobo. AM5 is going to live quite a few more generations and what you have right now is way more than adequate for a world-class gaming experience. Superior overclocking capabilities using the highest end parts (like those you already have) is not of any remarkable value in the context of gaming. It would only be worthwhile for eking a little bit more life from an antiquated setup or marginally adequate hardware that stuggles with gaming workloads. 1 REAPER | Z890 APEX | 270K PLUS | RTX 5090 | 48GB DDR5 @ 8800 | O11D XL EVO | HC-500A Chiller WRAITH | X870E APEX | 4585PX | RTX 5080 | 32GB DDR5 @ 8200 | O11D MINI V2 BANSHEE | B850MPOWER | 9950X | RTX 3070 | 48GB DDR5 @ 8000 | Test Bench Mr. Fox YouTube Channel | Mr. Fox @ HWBOT
electrosoft Posted 49 minutes ago Posted 49 minutes ago So Asus is sending me an Asus X870E Crosshair Dark Hero all shiny new to evaluate and add to my collection which is nice. I'm going to hold off on putting the 9850X3D delidded combo in the current MB in LM form and do it all up with the revamped edition. Glad I found out before I tore down my current system to install it. Still might pop it in but with just paste for now because that's quick and easy to collect some baseline data. Wonder if I can get sent one of their newer AIOs that interface directly to the MB connectors? 🤪 My original Crosshair Hero is solid but the LCD is flickering a little (common problem) so I could RMA it for a new one or at least a repaired one to then sell off with the 9800X3D. I could also just switch the wifey to AM5 and sell off the 14900KS SP109, much needed to be retired Asus Strix-A Z690 (loose USB ports in the rear) and B-die 2x16 G.Skill 4000 sticks. Does anyone in this thread still run a 13900k/14900k besides @Talon and I? -------------------------------------------------------- 13 hours ago, Mr. Fox said: I sent him a PM asking for his PayPal. I saw that over there, congrats brother! Definitely looking forward to the lid and delid results! It's a top notch sample and best way, just like @Talon, to get the most out of it. I'm working on it, lol. I think I want my ram water cooled equally as much as the CPU at this point. Even with a fan, temps are an issue 8000+. I suspect they could even provide a little bit of help on the low end too. 6 hours ago, Talon said: Just saw you grabbed that SP98! I honestly debated grabbing it too. Worse case, you return it and pick up another AM5. 270k would definitely be cheaper. At the very least, return the 9950X3D2 and try another one.
