You can circumvent the silly dynamic clocking baloney using EVGA Precision X1. Click the button to lock in full boost clock regardless of GPU load. I think it is better than Afterburner for most things.

 

This, plus for EVGA cards some use boost lock with PX1 with all stock settings to try and get an idea of their silicon quality too if you're curious.

This is a common misconception. Reaction times are different to perception and could indeed be much longer. Pretty much everyone in good health can perceive the difference in smoothness when dragging a window around reasonable size monitor at 60Hz, 120Hz and 240Hz - through this simple exercise we are already in the perception of sub 10ms phenomena territory.

Often times based on some conversations over time, that the position of reaction times and more often perceptions of FPS and the "upper limits" of what humans can perceive often becomes malformed statements. The more typical variation would be humans can only see up to x FPS.

 

While I dont have receipts for my understanding of the subject matter, I have more or less settled upon the notion of, we dont "see" in terms of FPS, we perceive motion. Since higher refresh panels can grant greater appearance of fluid motion, we can often perceive those differences, especially when tied to other factors (low input lag, higher polling rate peripherals.

Okay don’t laugh at me. But I literally finally got 1Gbit internet in my home. For some reason no matter where I lived, fast internet seemed to always be unavailable in my area. I always had the usual suspects. Satellite internet, 3mbps DSL, or most recently I have been using 5G cellular through a modem with a SIM card from my carrier. This option was always the best. Decently fast at about 100+ mbps, and unlimited. 
 

Turns out the home I have lived in for the past 5 years has been “Pre-Wired” for 1Gbit internet. And the service providers just had me listed as “Non serviceable” what a nice surprise! 
 

So anyways I finally have 1Gbit internet! It’s so nice too! It has been a long struggle.

100mbps to 1gbps will immediately pay dividends for any large downloads (steam, updates, etc...).

 

My only option since I moved over a decade ago has been Xfinity which is just the worst cost wise but killer Internet 1000mbps. Next closest was DSL at a whopping 15mbps.

 

Tmobile started offering 5g unlimited Internet and I test drove it. I get 400-700mbps down at $50 flat per month so I switched and now I save ~$200/mo vs Xfinity even calculating all the streaming and native content they offered. Outside of monster downloads, I don't miss the 1gbps speeds. I replaced Xfinity native content with Peacock for $19.99/yr promo.

 

I was already paying for multiple steaming services anyhow and had really moved away from watching native "Cable Box" content for some time now. I use an AppleTV 4k for everything. First chance I got to cut the cord I did with a quickness.

Yep. To add to both of these, some studies have shown that people are able to detect changes in motion on the order of just 1 millisecond. That means the effective refresh rate of the human eye is around 1000 Hz.

 

But of course we don't perceive things in frames per second. Rather, as @Reciever said, we perceive changes in object position, otherwise known as motion. A static image won't look any different no matter the refresh rate of the screen. Quick motion however will be clearer the higher the framerate is. The quicker the motion, the higher the framerate required for smooth perception of motion. This is because higher framerates allow for higher motion resolution.

 

So in short, higher refresh rates allow us to perceive motion closer to an analog manner, as motion occurs in instantaneous timesteps in the physical realm we inhabit.

You would be surprised how many places that you would think have it do not. Some larger cities have very limited options for ISPs and if they do have an option for it they get raped on the price due to zero competition. Where I live you have the option of grossly overpriced Gigabit with Cox cable or crappy Centurylink DSL with a max speed of 20 Mbps. TMobile 5G is blistering fast a half mile away and totally unusable at my residence. Due to the lack of competition, I pay significantly more for my Gigabit service than Cox customers do that live in Phoenix and other areas serviced by Cox where they have to compete for business against another ISP with equivalent service.

My youngest son has an Alienware M17xR2 that I gave him about 10 years ago. He lost the AC adapter 6 years ago and hadn't used it since. He decided he wanted to use it and I happened to have a spare AC adapter. He brought it to me to clean up, so I replaced the anemic HDD with a 1TB SSD and did a clean OS install. I had an unopened Alienware Windows 7 Ultimate DVD I used for the OS. It runs like a champ... 4780 Crossfried still working nice. Temps were OK, but it was filthy dirty inside. So, I took it apart for cleaning and thought I might as well repaste and repad. It was sobering experience to be reminded of what an awesome laptop used to be built like. I had forgotten what amazing quality Alienware used to have before they started churning out chintzy garbage. It was a real pleasure to work on it.

 

Weirdly enough, it still had the original phase change TIM paste and original thermal pads and the temps were totally decent before I took it apart. It had never been taken apart... still a virgin. I bought it almost new from @Batboy at NBR as a gift for him.

 

The heat sink radiators and fans were filled with a bunch of fuzz and crud. The thermal pads were still like new... soft and sticky, so I left them. After a thorough cleaning and putting it back together with KPX on the CPU and both GPUs and unobstructed radiators the temps were just a little bit better.

 

Remarkable in every way. Amazing build quality, gorgeous aesthetically, as heavy as a Buick, LOL. But, VERY old and slow by today's pathetic and trash crap gaming notebook standards. It brought back many fond memories of traveling with one of these beasts and staying up late at night talking with Brother @johnkssson the phone and benching it on top of a hotel room AC unit.

 Right, but of course the smoothness of CG motion is a function of FPS. With input lag there is a bit more extra neural complexity, however, we can also perceive "smoothness" of response very well. In real world a 100ms "input lag" would probably correspond to really heavy intoxication 🙂

 

Yeah, I don't know where that 60 fps or something "upper limit on FPS perception" myth came from. Possibly born back in the CRT era where they were figuring out at what point we stop perceiving the scanning effect. I would argue that's very different, because then we are not talking about perceiving FPS, but perceiving individual lines (or pixels) being drawn - a 2-6 orders of magnitude quicker process.

Thank you. I appreciate the kind words. The first issue I would have with that is him. He would not be down with that. He's almost 30 so he's not a little boy that I can push around. The second issue is that it is a laptop and, while I have one, they're not very interesting to me anymore. I have some fond memories of better days and they will be with me forever. But, even if it were built with current generation desktop CPU and MXM graphics, that ship has sailed and I chose to get off of it while it was still docked. I saw the storm on the horizon. I wouldn't even want it at this point. Desktops are too much better for me to embrace the idea. I came to peace with the idea that laptops are dead to me. The ease of rejecting the X170 was the last litmus test. It just felt good and natural to say no to it.

13900K in hand!! $569 was an amazing deal, cancelled that shitty Newegg scalp job after I checked out. SP108 lol, not sure if this is good yet. But Jesus first try 7400 CL34 booted on a Hero board. IMC is def improved. I haven't even tried higher yet but I'm thinking it's gonna be a go. 

 

Chip seems pretty damn amazing as expected. SP106. SP115 and SP88 on E cores. 

 

40,600 CB23 out of box on Z690 Hero to test CPU quality first before Dark. Using only a 280mm AIO it stays under 90c and pulled 272w peak package power. 1.190v load at defaults and 55x P and 43x E. This chip is insane. Can't wait to further tune it when I get home. Wife is making me run some errands with her today lol.

Reviews (roundup) of 13900K is up. And not a single digit in IPC uplift. Only higher core clocks and more baby cores. But enough to beat AMDs top dog in many benchmarks/product suites (not in all). This is too little even with an coming KS if AMD push out their 3D v-cashe chips in spring 2023 for being the gaming king.

 

 

But an nice overclocker if you use LN2.

Edit: Ah, so this suggests the CPU is power limited out of the box, and removing the limits and then some OC pushes the power draw to 388W and 399W respectively 🤣 (probably for very little benefit though)

Well for one, I do not like a Gigabyte/Aorus motherboards. Maximum power draw on any cpu generation. They really peg out the load line and voltage in my experience right out of the gate. Plus, their bios is a dang disaster!! I’m at the point where I would never own another even Gigabyte motherboard even if it’s free. And I absolutely mean that 100%. I don’t mind owning their GPU’s. I tested (3) 11900K’s on a Aorus motherboard notated their binning quality. Then re-ran them all on a EVGA Dark motherboard. You would think it was a different batch of processors all together. 
 

The thing is, you’ll see some variation in all motherboards really. Ideally you want to find that manual voltage sweet spot on your own. It takes hours and hours to get a new system just right. But it’s totally worth it in the end.

You’ve got the right idea man. I’m gonna start doing what you’re doing for sure. I’m gonna start planning in advance with hardware launches. I’m always scrambling last minute. I got ahead this time with CPU’s fortunately. And Newegg had already shipped my 13900KF as of this morning. But RTX4000 series got the better of me for sure. I was not prepared, I decided I wanted one a couple days before launch. And it takes at least 9-34+ days of working on my wife before such a large purchase can happen. 🤣
