I ordered a giant tube of MX-4 2 weeks ago and USPS shipped it. It got to my local post office and then went to some no name place in CA and it's been stuck there for nearly 10 days... USPS is usually alright, but this is a bit frustrating.

I've had this happen to me before with usps. It's like the pony, in pony express, ate some oats laced with drugs. Or it was some federal worker that didnt quite pass their DEI course.

Of course this happen for a reason. When you people have "all too much money" to spend on tech and things then expect the shipping companies need more time pushing the packages from A to B. So stop whine for waiting on the package. The best fix is as always... Spend less money🙂

Phoronix didn't provide figures for average performance with the mitigation enabled and with it disabled, but by our reckoning, performance drops by around 5% overall. The worst performance declines at around 10% in a few tests. However, there were several workloads where performance was more or less the same whether RFDS was mitigated.

 

An OS patch and a new microcode are necessary to mitigate RFDS. At least through motherboard vendor websites, we haven't seen any BIOS updates mentioning security mitigations for RFDS. However, Linux users got the new microcode through an update to Linux. Windows users will hopefully be able to get the patched microcode through a Windows update.

Well, yours is better than mine, but considering some of the horror stories I am seeing I think I did better than some folks. I was hoping it would be better, but it could certainly be a lot worse. It's not bad enough that I can get away with sending it back, and trying to exchange it for a better one might end badly.

 

I think ASUS needs to make some changes to firmware because my LLC tuning isn't having the expected effect. VID stays high no matter where I set the DC_LL. 

 

Not sure if it is relevant or not, but mine is also made in the USA.

That does not look bad at all! I would test it and not worry about the stupid SP personally. Can almost guarantee that chip is going to react far better than any 14900K/KF you've had.  I mean really were talking small potatoes mV here. And that doesn't mean it won't clock higher or better. Looks like a good MC score but again has to be truly tested. 

 

Edit: Looking over your P V/F curve, honestly they are stupid close. 15mV is nothing. 

 

I ordered another chip today and it shipped. Central Computers $699 and no tax is a nice perk. Arriving Monday from CC, good to see you got an USA chip too. I'm hoping I get something in the range of yours/mine again. Better would be nice of course.

Yes, they are very close. I'll probably use it with the IHS this weekend then move it to bare die next weekend.

 

So far it seems very close to the same silicon quality as my 14900KF.

 

So, now I will sell the two dead 13900K/KS and my good SP108 13900KS. And, I will keep the 14900K that I bought from you for an emergency backup.

 

Once I get this 14900KS on bare die and can do better head-to-head comparisons with the 14900KF I will keep the better one on the Apex and move the other one to Muchkin. I'm going to leave my hands on the Apex Encore and the 13900KS in that setup because it's the best I have had before and I don't want to disturb anything to upset the apple cart.

As usual, updates are actually downgrades. Only good for those obsessed with "security" and suck for everyone else.

What is your stock Cinebench 23 score? Loads of test results from reviews and from users is barely 40.000/41.000 for the KS. That's awful result when you know the KS run higher clocks for the P and the E-cores. 

 

I get +42160 in CBR23 with a stock 14900K with default bios. 5.7/4.4/4.5 ring (no XMP) all core clock speed in bench. And CBR23 run with below normal priority. Yep, the OS isn't full of trash tasks in the background but still the KS should provide more Oom-pah.

And is there an difference between the SP ranking between the 14th gen K and KS ? Because I see the SP for the E-cores looks worse for the KS. Almost half of the posted results show well below SP80. If there is same SP ranking, it looks very bad for the E-cores on the KS.

Has anyone here performed a de-lid without using a jig to do so? I ask as I recently acquired a launch model PS3 and am trying to de-lid the BGA Cell CPU as it runs WAY too hot (even with new thermal paste). It's the GPU that is known to be defective in the early PS3s, but knowing that this thing has been running in the worst conditions for nearly 18 years now means the CPU's days are numbered if I don't de-lid it. It's a miracle the GPU still works, the purple colored die I sent a week or so ago was the GPU...

 

I've used some really, really thin wire that is typically used to cut broken glass on phones, but that hasn't worked too well. I've also tried some thin painter's knives with heat, but that hasn't worked well either. Some recommend a razorblade, but I've seen horror stories of people murdering the CPU while using a razorblade. It just sucks because the gap between the substrate and IHS is super thin and the CPU is soldered, so I can't move it around at all.

Seems razorblade is the only option. A big layer of silicon/glue that need to be cut. Maybe add some heat with a heatgun under the work.

Yup. More people see the same as me. It seems Intel tried bin  for the single core crown. The rest is just sad.

I cannot get it to run Cinebench R23. It errors out. I do not think the firmware is right for KS. Something is off.

 

Yeah, the e-cores are trash, but they were also trash on all of the 14900K/KF that I returned. 13900KS e-cores were almost always better than 14th Gen CPUs for me.

 

I am seriously thinking about calling them on Monday and ask them to accept a return as a defective product. You would need cascade or LN2 for this to be usable at advertised clock speeds. I am not happy with it. It is a voltage pig and runs too hot to be usable. If I delid it and go bare die that might fix it, but then it would no longer be returnable if that doesn't fix it.

 

With BIOS defaults it idles at 45°C and sits at 1.527V. If you have to tune it down to 14900K clock ratios then owning a KS is totally pointless because it can't be used with default clocks.

The reason it is slower is because of excessive voltage, overheating and thermal throttling. It doesn't perform as advertised because nothing normal is capable of cooling it. You would ne need LN2 for daily driver cooling to run it at the rated clock speeds. In order for it to be a usable product you have to de-tune it and make it function like a K so there is no point in having a KS unless you are the 1 in 1000 that gets a god tier CPU.

Damn and this is stock? I expect you use the latest beta. Tried flash the official bios? And have you tried another MC from bios? See also my older post here. Can you compare vs the results from the linked results? Voltage, temps, software, power consumption and scores. Run default. As well... This mess above is from the white Apex? Too much work use another board?

Yes, I tried the latest from ASUS and other betas, even old BIOS. I am not trying any more. Already wasted too many hours on this poorly binned piece of trash. I will just be content with the excellent 13900KS and 14900KF CPUs that I already own. The voltage needs are what they are and it will always be too hot unless I detune it to match 13900KS or 14900K and if that has to be done the KS is meaningless and serves no purpose. It is going back and I am not buying another one. It is cleaned up and back in the box. I will call them Monday for an RMA number.

 

I even booted into my cancer OS 11 and ran XTU AI tuning and it tuned 63x on several cores and 62x on the rest and it throttles down to 5.6GHz in Cinebench and reaches 107°C. It would probably be OK for a gamer where the CPU never has to work, but it is unsuitable for the purpose for which I bought it. Gaming is not that important to me. If it were then I would be buying an i7 and running it stock.

Yeah, the e-cores are trash, but they were also trash on all of the 14900K/KF that I returned. 13900KS e-cores were almost always better than 14th Gen CPUs for me.

With BIOS defaults it idles at 45°C and sits at 1.527V. If you have to tune it down to 14900K clock ratios then owning a KS is totally pointless because it can't be used with default clocks.


That really makes me wonder what is happening with the mount or bios. Or maybe it is indeed a defective CPU? Not good either way. I don’t think it should idle that high temp wise.
 

On another note. My 14th gen E88 cores are totally happy at 4.9Ghz (Only needs 1.234v load for 6.0P/4.9E/5.0R). I haven’t tried 5.0Ghz E-Core yet, but I have enough voltage head room at this point, It might just happen. (Haven’t tried yet)

 

My R batch with E88 cores are easily the best E cores I’ve tested to date though.

der8auers SP104 isn't much better than your SP102. Intel should never ever have released this Cpu in it's bin state. And I feel very sad for those that buy the 14900K/13900KS forwards. Intel think single core workflow is king today. Just pump in voltage and hope for the best.

 

Imagine how the 14900KS will run in the new flawed tiny cramped Alienware chassis with the small cute 280 mm custom AIO?

 

Fixed 59/45/45 with L5 and 1.5V. And stright to 100C and freeze. Do you freeze from seeing this @Mr. Fox?🥶

And how about +20C between the coldest and hottest cores with the new fixed Thermal Grizzly direct die block already in production? Hmmm. And why make a better coldplate for the RGB version for +$140 or +40% premium above the vanilla direct die block? Why not use same coldplate also for the non RGB version? Again... I don't grasp this.

Defective chips. And you are able to run your cpu below 50C and slight above 300W. That's an major difference. The KS isn't more than bad binned chips. Intel's main target is gamerboys that want highest possible clock speed and can disable HT and all the baby cores. You probably know about the next gen chips... 8 real cores... No HT to reduce the power consumption to match AMD's low power gamer chips.

So far it seems very close to the same silicon quality as my 14900KF.

 

So, now I will sell the two dead 13900K/KS and my good SP108 13900KS. And, I will keep the 14900K that I bought from you for an emergency backup.

 

Once I get this 14900KS on bare die and can do better head-to-head comparisons with the 14900KF I will keep the better one on the Apex and move the other one to Muchkin. I'm going to leave my hands on the Apex Encore and the 13900KS in that setup because it's the best I have had before and I don't want to disturb anything to upset the apple cart.

  

 

The performance regressions are already evident to me. All 14900K/KF seem to have slightly lower performance than my 13900KS and Cinebench scores seeem to creep a little lower with each ME and Microcode update. Memory latency also seems to grow a little with each update. Memory latency with this new 14900KS is about 1 ns worse than the 14900KF and 13900KS using the same memory profile.

 

As usual, updates are actually downgrades. Only good for those obsessed with "security" and suck for everyone else.

 

Your SP117 13900KS is still working though right?

I think a lot would change with a delid, but as you say that negates being returning it. SP102 is not that bad and the odds of getting worse are definitely in play.

The more hours I spent trying to make it usuable the more frustrated I got. It's not worth keeping. It's a piece of trash. Even trying to de-tune it to run at 13900KS/14900K/KF clocks is a no go. It guzzles voltage and power beyond reason functionality in Cinebench. Trying to use settings that @tps3443 was suggesting (L4 and Auto) was seeing spike up to my 1.700V cap and idle voltage at 1.650V, load voltage in the 1.450V range, which cannot be managed effectively unless you are using LN2 or cascade cooling.

AMD will never be open for consideration again for me. They don't offer any products that I am interested in buying. So, I am wondering if maybe the systems I own now will be my last. In my futuile effort to make a silk purse of the 14900KS sow's ear, I booted into my Windoze 11 Cancer OS and fired up XTU. I guess there is now an AI overclocking feature. Super stupid. I had not seen it before. It tuned mulltple cores for 6.3GHz and the rest at 6.2GHz, about 1.625V on VCore. It ran and it was stable, but was not usable due to overheating and thermal throttling with my water chilled to 16°C. Cinebench pulled over 650W before it collapsed from heat, at which point the core clocks dropped to about 53x on the P-cores and 41x on E-cores and under 40K Cinebench score. Utterly worthless. It might not have overheated playing games. But, yeah... like I give a rat's butt about that.

Problem with next gen if this takes hold will come down to power efficiency of Zen5 and price. If you can net double the AVX-512 performance for the same price, you can double that mining income. Factor in it going up per day and I can see Zen5 8950x's disappearing fast and 7950x's and even potentially 7950X3Ds but hopefully it flatlines and busts.

 

As for X3D I always wait. I got my 7950X3D for $476 total shipped after tax and everything to my door. Next gen, I'll probably skip the 8950x and wait for the 8950X3D and hopefully it won't suffer the same fate, but if it is lucrative enough to mine on, it will.

 

Back to $599 and $590 now for the 7950X3D which is $640 and $630 shipped for me. 😞
