Recommended Posts

hey everyone

after weeks i waited for this adlink mxm to pciex16 adapter (https://de.aliexpress.com/item/1005003809556859.html) to arrive from aliexpress i finaly can make a review and detailed test to see how this things working.... actually someone did already i mod like this for his Clevo P751TM1 but many question was not answered...as you can read this thread https://www.techpowerup.com/forums/threads/failed-to-use-desktop-vga-with-laptop-egpu.292790/page-2

What bothered me at first was that the cable was a bit too long...it's a bit hard but is still easy to bend, but you should still be careful...

the next thing you definitely need is a separated heatsink because otherwise the cable has no space to come out on gpu side....and also you can only put one screw in but its enough for now...first pics

https://imgur.com/a/n25FRjp

The only gpus for testing i have are nvidia gtx 970 windforce-amd readon r7 370 and gtx 560 ti

and the psu i found is from Be quiet! Straight Power BQT E8-CM-480W...

as i know from the P751TM1 guy is that the internal screen will not work because there is no intel gpu

but i fixed this problem with this display controller https://www.amazon.de/dp/B06WVMPWHP?psc=1&ref=ppx_yo2ov_dt_b_product_details

after plugging in everything i pressed the power and its started normal without any problem...the gpu adapter

also powers itself immediately with the psu so its started perfectly into bios first..bios shows unknown GPU

but you can still see the vbios version...after booting to windows 10 its automatically started to install the drivers for the 970

i could also install the nvidia drivers without any problem but I was surprised that I didn't need an inf mod

like i needed on 980m 965m 970m long time ago with a modded heatsink...

time spy gived me a score 2713 so you rly get the full x16 speed with this adapter 😄

i did some basic test like restart, power on off, some stress tests to see how the adapter acts but its rly rly working amazing

like a normal mxm gpu so i will not putting my mobile 1070 back in...alrdy searching for a 2070/360 lets see...

but i also wanted to know if the older gpus and also the amd will work..so i put the readon r7 370 in and its worked also perfect 😄

but now in bios i cant even see the vbios version anymore so everything is unknown with the amd gpu but also on benchmarks

you getting the full speed out..i could install the latest amd drivers without problems...

the old gtx 560ti worked also well...drivers also installed perfectly...

but I don't understand why it doesn't need an if mod and the amd graphics cards work but nevermind

some screens from gpuz https://imgur.com/a/0Bw2f6n

after all i am rly happy with this adapter...so i dont need the expensive mxm mobile cards anymore..know i can put any gpu i want and even intel gpu i think....will sell the 1070 mxm and stick with 970 for know before i buy the new one...techicaly i can go up to 4090 in future but lets see how the adapter goes...will send some more pics later and mybe i will buy one more adapter as replacement

if anyone has question i am here to answer them 😉

Good job!

You don't need an inf mod because it behaves exactly the same as desktop GPU's do. You only need inf mods for MXM because they work a bit different with the Device ID's and such. (my speculation)

Now you just need to figure out a way how to make it hot-plug =D

Having an adapter permanently stuck to your PC is kinda shitty. You could use some external connector for the PCI-E lanes and then have a hotswap system for your PC.

When in need just plug in couple cables and have an eGPU ready! But this needs some serious consideration. I tried once with 2 HDMI connectors and the latest HDMI cable (HDMI 2.1a) and while it worked it gave me PCI-E corrected WHEA errors like crazy because the wires I used were not the same length.

It was for PCI-E 3.0 4x. For 8x you would need 4HDMI connectors xD I think so atleast.

Weird thing is that even amd gpu works, just tested readon rx 7900 from a friend and works 💪...

well the adapter doesn't bother me that much...I extended the psu cable so it doesn't stand on the table...also at least the gpu isn't that loud anymore so but I am planning a enclosure like from the egpus...let's see how it goes 😀

That's also to be expected. No reason for AMD GPU's not to work. Good job!

I haven't disconnected the GPU fan yet because I've heard the system needs it to boot,

but I'm not sure yet otherwise the gpu fan also goes full speed when the cpu fan is also full 😞

Try disconnecting it. Maybe there is some custom software to put the fan speeds manually?

today i disconnected the gpu fan ,it booted well and worked great buuuut when the cpu was @100% for around 1min the pc shuts down sadly...

the temps are ok of course after connecting the fan everything is back normal that means the ec controller needs the fan for a reason....

also i can controll the fan speed only from the 970 😄 .....also clevo controll center shows me the 970.....

Hello!

I see the first post talked about me, I'll give you some photos to see if it helps. I use it with a Clevo p751TM1 laptop. An important observation. I have no keyboard lighting while using the adapter.

This is an interesting solution, but it is a pity that there is no intere solution:-) In my considerations, I always come to the conclusion that the P870xx offers the best possibilities. A laptop should still offer the mobile possibilities! With me now also x16 lanes works and I can also install drivers without driver deactivation:-)

The Vbios of the desktop cards does not include an MXM header for the system bios(See MXM software spec). For these laptops, the manufacturer(Clevo) only assumes MXM modules and desktop was never considered or limited:-) Therefore the system bios still recognizes the card as a problem!

hey MR007RM its good to see you in this forum

yes i readed your thread on techpowerup with title "Failed to use desktop vga with laptop. (eGPU)" many times before i got my mxm...i actually got that mxm to pice adapter idea from you so ty so much 🙂

hmm actually its weird ,keyboard lights from my clevo still work perfectly...had no problems with anything right now...actaully i using it my zotac gtx 1070 mini...

will finaly upgrade to 3060/70 next mounth lets see how it goes...

recently i could test this adapter with the GeForce RTX 4060 Ti from my firend...it worked perfectly but i bit slower than the official benchmarks because

the 4060 has only x8 pcie lines so according to der8uer the pcie 3.0 slows the card sadly :(...so i will go for the 3000 series...

A laptop is always better than a desktop. I can carry it in a backpack, everything fits. More practical. I like the p751tm1 laptop, that's why I use it. The adapter was completed in 2019. I followed the story on a Chinese social media site. It took several years before it became available. So good old engineering. I bought 2 adapters to have a spare. Yes, it's a big advantage that the driver goes up without anything, just like in the case of a desktop computer. I use water cooling, but without a water cooling unit.....I will add it later. I had to buy quickly because you can't buy anything for this laptop. The i9-9900K will be enough for me for a long time. Now I use it with 64GB ram and an nvidia rtx 3080Ti card. It's unique, not many people have it, and it's like what you have. I solved the internal display thing with an external portable monitor that I attach to the display and use it with an HDMI connection when I am not at home and there is no large desktop monitor. It suits me that way.

Hello! I would like to purchase an RTX 4090 or an RTX 4080Ti card in the future. Maybe next year when it will be much cheaper and of course used because it's even cheaper. Then there will be something, because the CPU will be very small, but it doesn't matter because there is no laptop on the market that I would replace it with.

Hey buddy I am new to the forum and I am amazed with what you are doing with these laptops. Could you spare a few minutes and share a crash guide on how to use the adapter and hook the 3080 ti card? also where can I unlock my bios? I am reading everything I can find to digest where to begin. I have a P870TM1 board. Thank you!!!

I bought the laptop used with an open dSanke bios version. It's supposed to have a gtx bios on it. I don't think you need an open bios, that is, to use the adapter.
This is my first Clevo laptop. Before that, there was an MSI GT70 on which I opened the bios from an exe file under Windows. I got it from someone on another forum.
I'm not an expert on the subject. You have to look for an 870 bios version. It's just that someone has it, and it will apply if you need it. I can also ask my friends about it.

The adapter must be started together with the laptop, then it will come up. Before that, ACPI must be disabled in the device manager. (Photo)

The battery will not function as well, but it is present, because if there is a power cut, the laptop will not turn off. This is how it works, if I say correctly, from the 2000 series upwards. A gtx 970 ran without disabling ACPI. An RTX 2080 no longer came up just by disabling ACPI, you have to start the laptop that way.
For me, the keyboard lighting only works at the beginning, when Windows comes up, it unfortunately does not work if the system is stable. If there is lighting, something is wrong. :-)))))))))))

I have Win11 and everything works stably, for example XTU, MSI AB....everything like on a desktop computer. The ram timing is only known by the bios and the software....this part of the XTU is incomplete. I don't know what else to say. You have to dive in and find the answer to everything in the process.
Many people helped, nothing would have worked alone.

Stock TM board with stock bios capable to support the rtx series,  i have stock bios on the 751TM and a 2080 mxm card.

In older models like DM2/3-KM , the bios mods for unlocking and adding microcodes for 8-9 th gen support .

Rtx mxm would work with stock bios but then theres a hardver ID mismatch in the gpu inf files,  so you need to copy the ID's to the inf file to install nv driver. Like the 750DM2-G that ive sold, the GTX 1080 that got into it had a different vbios (for a TM and a 200W power limit) . With the stock bios there was an ID mismatch,  but when the TM modbios was installed for 8-9th gen support the ID was accepted by Nvidia driver .

I have seen 751TM 775TM 870TM machines with RTX 3080 mxm , if it fits  then it probably gonna be work.

At dell precision  m6800 laptops you can go with pascal gtx and quadro but only with early vbios , other than that , the windows wont start but in linux its working fine......

((How nice that we can talk in English here when I don't even know English. 😆 ))  If I still need a bios later, I now know who to contact.👍

Good to hear! I have solved my solution for the screen as original internally. Thus, the desktop cards are connected directly via the internal display.
