When it comes to DRAM, I think we're there, in the promised land, where prices are low.

GPUs, not quite yet, and AM5 motherboards are still overpriced for sure, but RAM and SSDs are cheap now.

Hard drives are coming down too, at the right capacities you can hit $16/TB, still a fair amount less than the roughly $50/TB for TLC SSDs.  But the price difference is a lot less than it used to be.  I'll still probably buy one or two more hard drives, but five years from now... it might not just make sense to buy spinning rust anymore.

I'm thinking of getting 2x32gb ddr4 3200 sticks and a 4tb SSD for 500 bucks, my laptops only worth about 1000 is this a wise move, I own about 400 games and it might be nice installing all of them, but then again I can just load the ones im playing and recycle the list as I have 1000mbps internet.

I think its to much, for gaming you are well set with 32GB and a 2TB..64gb and 4Tb only if you do profi photo and video work.

Yes, the storage price went down a lot, in october i got 2tb ssd with 230 Euro and last week i bought another one with 130 E..

yeah the local best buy has a 32gb ram kit for 100. its more reasonable I was just thinking resale value for 64gb. and your probably right about the storage in this day and age 2tb is still quite a bit and 3tb total should do the trick. thanks for the input ill post benchmark scores when I get it. it's just a msi bargin ssd and vengence ram. will be buying it possibly at the end of the month.

Well Murphys Law struck again..I dropped my Phone, an Xiaomi Mi11 Ultra on the  road and it landed on the corner side exactly between the Case and Tempered Glass, its like a 3 MM gap off unprotected surface and the display got broken from one corner to the other 🙄. Why dont i have this chance in millions on the LOTTO  😅. So because of this and the repair its to expensive i got myself a new phone:

Several months ago, I had purchased a Gigabyte M28U to use in my new office space. While its picture quality and response times are quite good, especially for the substantially discounted price I paid, the problem is it's neither bright enough nor does it handle glare particularly well. As a stopgap, I swapped it out with my MSI MAG274QRF-QD, putting the M28U in my separate gaming space, and it's been worked great there. Having used a nice, high-refresh 4K screen, though, going back to 1440p was a bit of a let-down so I sought out some alternatives, specifically from Best Buy since I would want to take advantage of my TotalTech membership.

First up was an open-box Sony Inzone M9. While it had the brightness I was after, the stand didn't extend high enough for my needs. Plus, the unit in question had a large patch of blotchy purple pixels that I have no idea how they got past supposed open-box quality control. Back it went.

Second up, because I'm a glutton for punishment, was an open box (supposedly in better condition this time) LG 27GP950. Not as bright as the Sony but still significantly better than the Gigabyte. All was well at first until I observed a small cluster of dead pixels. Once you see, you cannot unsee. Back this one went.

That return happened during BB's Black Friday in July sale, and my local store had the new Acer mini-LED display brand new for $599 plus an additional $30 off for TotalTech members. I snapped that up, and it's been solid so far. Super bright, very responsive, and nice color reproduction. My only real complaint is that you can't adjust the overdrive settings when FreeSync is enabled. However, in my short time playing with it, the standard normal mode seems to work just fine. I don't play competitive games nor do I have the critical eye for this stuff that someone like Tim from HardwareUnboxed does.

Lastly, I also picked up a WD Black SN770 1 TB SSD for my kid's laptop. I think there's a problem with the default Windows installation where there's heavy battery drain when the machine sits unplugged even for a few hours. As such, I'm going to do a clean install of the OS plus it will have double the storage so when he's ready to expand his gaming horizons beyond Roblox, it will be ready.

ended up getting 64gb of ddr4 3200 venageance ram for free. I know its overkill but it was free so im hunky dorie. just wish I had money to get a 4tb storage drive for my laptop, 3tb gets filled up fast, for example I have 65-75 games installed all triple A games and I have used up the 2tb and 600gb of my 1 tb and there is still 100 or so games left to install. I think if you want all the good games at your finger tips 6tb is the perfect fit allowing you too have 1-2tb left for windows daily usage.

just sniped myself a Teamgroup DDR5-8200 2x24 GB kit, been waiting for 8200 kits to become more readily available here in europe. i was initially eyeing the respective G.Skill kit, but in the end Teamgroup was cheaper, had better availability and also tighter stock timings, albeit at a slightly higher voltage.

normally i wouldnt have bothered to upgrade from my current G.Skill DDR5-6600 2x16GB kit, especially since ryzen 7000 can only go up to like 6200-6600 (mostly depending on cpu IMC). however,  one of the G.skill dimms gave out on me with regards to its RGB strip, so wanted to avoid any downtime during the warranty process. funny enough, im actually using the dimms switched off without RGB due to temps, makes roughly a 10C difference between RGB switched on and off lulz. naturally, this has a significant impact on how far i can tighten the subtimings. im also using a 140 mm fan blowing directly onto the dimms for an additional 10-12C drop, so total 20+C less than stock with RGB.

thanks for bro @Mr. Foxon providing a headsup on the fickle temperature dependency of DDR5 modules 🙂

the kit should arrive this week, if all goes well, looking forward to it!

The only way is through BIOS, so - unless you have a way to hack/unlock that - it’s not looking good.

it depends. if you have a stock / locked bios then the only hope you have is via Intel XTU for RAM overclocking. youll have to try multiple version of XTU, based on experience there might be some older versions that offer more tuning options for a specific laptop / cpu model than newer ones. so its a trial and error with lots of patience thing....as RAM tuning usually is 😄

and yes, im tuning my RAM, just like basically everything else in my systems haha 😛

Let’s be realistic: very old XTU back from the long-forgotten era of overclockable laptop RAM wouldn’t work with new-ish CPUs or RAM, would it? Hope is good, false hope is bad…

haha i never said it would work! 😛

Not the place for that discussion fellas

youre absolutely right my man, so back to topic:

I also purchased a medium sized mod mat from GamersNexus. I was originally planning to go with the fullsized one, but then got out my measurement tape and realized how FREAKISHLY huge that thing is lulz. wouldnt fit on my desk without having to shove away everything else haha. so medium size it is!

btw, its a good timinng to order a mod mat at GN, in case youre interested: they recently published this full length documentary about AMD (planning for Intel and Nvidia in the future, as well):

in celebration of that, theyre currently signing autographed mod mats not just by Steve, but also the full team that was involved in the making of said documentary 🙂

aside from that, the current batch of the medium sized mod mat apparently has a print error on it, so youre basically getting a rare "misprint" mistake by GN and they include some goodies to make up for that:

image.png.708f73daafa92cfe4f41b9ed6230996f.png

sooo yeah, if youve been eyeing to purchase a mod mat, now is a good time! the offer for the additional autographs will last for 7 days after publication of the documentary, so its still valid until.....

aw crap, sorry guys, seems like that offer was only valid until 15-Jul LOL. didnt intend to lead you on like that, only realized it just now when checking the publication date of the video 😅 sowwyyyyy

My monitor saga continues. The USB hub on the Acer mini-LED I bought wasn't working properly as my keyboard would constantly disconnect and reconnect. I'm now trying my luck again with an LG 27GP950, this time brand new since Best Buy discounted it to $600. So far, so good.

It's also time for my dad's once-a-decade computer upgrade. He's currently rocking an old Lenovo SFF system with a quad-core Haswell CPU that I got from MicroCenter for like $350 back in the day. As he's a boomer, he's very set in his ways - didn't want a laptop that he could connect to his monitor, no AIO PC, no Mac Mini, etc. I originally found an HP Pavilion on clearance from a local OfficeMax that's going out of business. However, I found a better deal directly from HP on a Victus desktop of all things. It has an i5 13400F and an Arc A380 GPU. He's gotten by the last 9+ years with 128 GB of storage so the 256 GB SSD it has will be more than sufficient. Also went with the stock 8 GB of RAM as I have a 16 GB kit on-hand to upgrade it. For well under $600 all-in, I'm hoping this will be the last PC he ever needs.

sup mah dudes!

i just got myself my very first display colorimeter, very curious to try it out:

calibrite-calibrador-display-pro-hl-cali

funny enough, i had its predecessor in my wishlist for ages now, the Calibrite Colorchecker Display Plus. Now that i finally came around to making a purchase i realized its successor was just released like a month ago, perfect timing!

apparently the new models have a higher capability to properly calibrate HDR monitors, which is of course nice to have in my case with the up to 2000 nits Neo G8 🙂

have to admit im a total noob when it comes to display calibration, but i figured id give it a shot, especially since the Neo G8 was among the top 3 most expensive parts of my build (after the MSI 4090 and the Asus X670EE).
