iets GT 500 now theres a quieter gt625. it will drop temps by 10-15c so thats going to help for sure, but it is pricey. I have the GT500 and its pretty loud, have to crank my music and I still hear it.

My X170SM is tuned to not go over 45db under load. That is part of why it's cooling system is so great as it can do 225w at a very reasonable noise level. I have considered adding noctua fans to my cooler master u3 plus to see if it adds more airflow for little added noise.

I decided to go with the llano cooler, seems to have similar performance, some minor cons vs the IETS, but better controls.  Honestly - if we had some kind of heatsink / paste that would lower temps by 10~15C for ~$100 I think many people would jump at it. The problem with the cooler is physical space + sound - but if it delivers the promised performance it may be a decent exchange. We will see.

Nice! As a whole I am pretty happy that the P750DM2 - a 15.6" laptop can cool the 150w GPU + 70w CPU (undervolted) ~ 220w total, but it does get up to mid/high 80s and 90% fan speed. So not something I want to keep for long periods of time. But if with the cooler on lower fan settings can bring it down to 70s, even high 70s I think that would be pretty darn good.

personally I don't care about noise as I can turn up the music volume or use headphones. temps/performance is all I care about. the Iets gt500 really does drop it by 10c I have tested numerous times and it seems to be recreatable by 13c with fans off and then on. simple test and results were very consistant.

either way the llano is also good as it has the same design from what I recall, could be wrong but they both likely have similar performance. And the big determining factor of laptop temps at least for me is ambient temps. when I open my window im around 65c when its closed get 80c.

OK! Today I refit the RTX 3080 laptop GPU Clevo P870DM3-G and used a copper plate taken out of an old damaged m18xr2 GPU heatsink and placed it on the 3080 DIE and thermal pasted it to the Vapor chamber double heatsink. could not screw the heatsink to the GPU. 3080 has an offset but the 1mm lift gave the clearance needed to run perfect. The RTX 3080 is amazing here are some scores

I liked your firestrike score, 34k not bad. Your temps after the mod though. 58c average egads. seriously nice temps. Im using PTM 7950 and gt500 cooler and hit 70c. might be time for me to clear out dust now. temps have been slowly going up. I think they were peaking at 58c before with an undervolt and underclock, cant seem to recreate it. I scored 111 000 on night raid with my 3060 so im not sure why yours peaked at 108 but it has to be cpu bottlenecked. in most benchmarks and games though its unlikely you will be bottlenecked.

what do you get in Valley and heaven? 1080p maxed

This was on Win 11. The 3Dmark scores were on Win 10. I am trying to determine the difference between the 2 just for my own clarification. The Clevo has a max fan that must be on otherwise the temps go thru the roof. sometimes i forget and the demos crash, hope I dont melt my laptop LOL

So I got my llano cooler and man! What a difference it makes for the temps!

With a little more tweaking I was able to get #31 overall in TimeSpy for a 8700k & 2080 combo:

https://www.3dmark.com/spy/47553404

  • Overall: 10,089
  • CPU: 8,180
  • GPU: 10,523

It also happens to be right above the "Budget Gaming PC (2023)" mark that has an overall score of: 10,069. . . making a gaming laptop from 2016 still relevant in 2024, 8 years later.  This is why socketed laptops rule!

Edit: Forgot to mention this is all with a 150w bios for the 2080, if I tried higher watt bios, 180w or 200w I am sure I could score higher.

I had to dial it back a little as it crashed when opening Cyberpunk and had artifacts with Metro.

So I dialed it back to something that would work daily:

  • CPU: -140.6mV on cache and core @ 4.4Ghz all core, 4.6Ghz 4 Core, 4.8Ghz 2 Core. F\
  • GPU: +162mhz @ 0.868mV +500 RAM

The IIano cooler set at at 1k RPM (Max is 2.8k RPM).   It stays mid ~70s very comfortably at full load.  Even with it dialed back it was #74 on the overall score: https://www.3dmark.com/spy/47554240

For real world this meant:

  • Cyberpunk 2077 (Ultra Preset, with no DLSS/FSR on, native 1080p resolution):
    • 89.5FPS avg with a low of 75.33FPS
  • Metro Exodus REDUX (Quality: Very High / SSA - On / Texture filtering AF 16x / Motion blur - Off / Tesselation - Very High  / Vsync - Off / Advanced PhysX - On) native 1080p resolution:
    • 98.33FPS avg with a low of 21.29

Seeing easily above 60fps at native resolution with ultra preset on a game that in 2024 is still considered nice looking just shows how relevant a simple setup like this can be.

Nice! You might want to try the 180W bios - scored more or less the same for me as 200W and should allow you to go beyond 11K.

The nice thing about the 3080 is that its power consumption is quite low.

Are you running it at 150W?

In any case the performance is better than a 200W+ 2080 Super.

I have a 3080 coming that will go into my X170SM-G which should be the best of both worlds - 4 useable SSD slots, 10 cores and a GPU with 16GB memory 🙂

excellent scores. 🙂

I applied de crapifier and a few other debloaters and my scores went down. not holding clocks on cpu or gpu. no idea what it changed but its broken. getting a 4tb ssd today and when I install it Ill be re installing windows and hopefully I don't have to reinstall daily lol annoying. anyways Ill be posting 4k benchmarks soon just in case anyone is looking to do 4k gaming on a budget with a 1070-4050.
