RTX 3080 in M18xR2? Should I do it? lol

This was my first experience with AMD and it will be my last. I cannot get the software to work in m17x r4. I thought I would eventually try the RX6600 XT in my M6700 but with the heatsink buchery I don't think so. I am so glad I didn't try it in the m18x r2 because it is so much easier swapping in the m17x r4. I tried a few from AMD and even went to Dell but nothing worked. I went the whole gammut from CMos reset, DDU and amd cleanup utility and AMD software compatibility tool. For some reason the GPU fan would not run with the AMD card and when I did the last uninstall and removed the card I needed to hold it with a napkin it was so hot. So as much as we complain about Nvidia and that being much deserved, Nvidia is so much better I can't see how there is any competition. So What GPU is next???

Might if I suggest something. Thanks for getting in all this trouble to buy a GPU and test. Don't throw the towel already.

Try using a linux distribution. Maybe you will have more luck if the OS makes the job for you. Also try a Linux benchmark for comparison.

Maybe try extracting the drivers and install them via "have disk" mode then then make the install of the software on top of that. AMD never have a trouble free driver install software. I had two amd in crossfire in my M18x and always a driver upgrade was a pain in the a.....

Though I believe your GPU is a 200watt one, but that threshold will hold you back when you start pushing your gpu.

Don't lose hope. These gpus are sold for custom projects, there there is surely a way to make them work. And working out of the box, is surely out of the question.

Are you trying to run via SG or PEG mode?

I am running SG, I tried PEG and got a load of beeps 8,7,5,3 and also black screen, also the amd software locks up Firefox browser and MMC device manager and I have to power shutdown to go into safe mode to DDU. Right now I found on sourceforge modded AMD install package, cant get the bookmark cause firefox wont open

also disabled driver signature enforcement which popped up but on restart had code 31

Here it is https://www.amernimezone.com/

Trying this but it wont finish, just seems jammed up

From the picture you posted of device manager, it seems the gpu driver itself is fine just not the software?

Why not ignore the software for now and try running a 3d application to see what happens?

I don't think he can ignore the software. We use Nvidias Panel to set our High performance GPU to take part in heavy rendering.

Having the software not on his side, everything will use the iGPU regardless

That happened because you cannot set the Radeon to render graphics. It seems to be problem with the software.

I have to assume that it doesn't support LVDS and a big maybe for EDP hence not working in peg mode. If the m6700 has an edp screen it is worth a shot despite all the work needed.

A viable option after all attempts get exhausted on the m17xr4. I am burning an Ubuntu .iso now with rufus. 2nd attempt, the 1st I set it to GPT but it needs to be MBR so failed attempts are just common practice LOL

Have you tried a Linux boot stick?

I use Ventoy and it is very helpful to have a look at different distros:

That may be the least effort required and you can throw a bunch of distro isos on there and with a bit of luck something like Nobara will allow you to gain some further insights into the (lack of) capabilities of your Radeon:

It literally took me 2 min. to swap out the amd rx 6600xt and swap in the P4000. Now I am going to try ubuntu with nvidia installed and then swap in the amd card if I get linux going if all fails then the M6700 is the next victim. OH! and ebay has m17xr4 GPU heatsinks for 10 bucks, just bought 3 tripple pipes Yeah Baby!

Starting with windows 10 this doesn't matter. You can go to windows settings and choose the high performance gpu now.

I would look into modifying AMD drivers @aldarxt

I went into windows graphic settings and it only had intel HD 4000 for both high perf. and power saving. How would I modify amd drivers because I did find a .inf and put in a line with 0551 but there were so many I only did Navi. the Hardware ID is 73FF but there were many other lines with percentage numbers. Just not sure how to do AMD .inf

Be sure to check if your M6700 has an edp screen, if not then there is a chance it might have the same results as the M17x R4 as it is clearly not playing nice with the IGP. If it doesn't play nice with edp then this experiment would likely rule out this card from being a viable option for laptops.

Should if the card supports edp otherwise it is probably only good for a SFF desktop. If all else fails you could try to see if it plays nice with an IGP in either the M6700 or M18X to help rule out some other odd compatibility issue like system bios or the EC etc.
