As mentioned before, Clevo actually had everything ready for a 3080 Ti MXM, but Nvidia wouldnt let them go through with it. The Green Goblin at its best, just ask EVGA 😅

This can of course be seen both ways and I agree that it looks like the blame lies with Nvidia, same as with the request by Tongfang/Uniwill to increase max power to more than 175W as their water cooling would allow for it - DENIED.

What would have been wrong with Clevo refreshing the X170 with Z690 + DDR4, and stick with the existing 3060/3070/3080 MXM lineup?

I am annoyed Nvidia holds this double standard. I have a Precision 7770 with a modular 3080 Ti mobile chip, if they allow Dell to make this, then they should allow Clevo as well. Or maybe they made some requirement like "modular Geforce only allowed if Quadro cards also used". What a bunch of crap.

Having had the Strix and now having the NH55 AND Dell Precision 7770 (so three laptops with full fat core counts), what is your general consensus across the board?

I would probably have gotten an X170 successor of that kind but most people are after the ultimate graphics performance so I can understand their reluctance.

You can say what you want about Intel but the way they are producing their chips makes it quite easy to offer a socketed model for them, nothing that Intel really can do against it. Not so easy for Nvidia chips that cannot be bought freely on the open market. I feel that Nvidia uses this leverage to dominate and coerce manufacturers at will - aren't there laws against that and the lack of competition and progress that comes with it? In any case it should be possible to get a 3080 Ti desktop chip and build a 250W MXM successor with it or even a 300W GPU BGA monster but instead Nvidia prefers to dictate to buyers what they can and cannot do.

The Strix is great for gaming performance, noise and built in audio. I didn't like the overly gamer design, lack of webcam, port selection and honestly no FHD panel option.

The NH55J is great for CPU performance, good aesthetics. I didn't like the audio (especially lack of Windows 10 driver support) or the fact that it has a 15 inch screen. Even with tuning it is noisier than I prefer and has random noise spikes. Battery life isn't great but it can usually last through a longer meeting.

The Dell has the best build quality, aesthetics, keyboard, webcam, battery life and support. The performance is low but is a work in progress. The price is about the same as the Strix if you do not factor in the warranty upgrade cost. It is also the quietest of the bunch just because of the way the fans are tuned and its thickness. The port selection is amazing, all laptops should USB-C and USB-A on both sides.

very nicely summed up my friend...

so, whos up for a 40 series card this october? my focus is on the 4090 now. i know it would make more sense to wait and see what RDNA 3 brings to the table, but "unfortunately" my gaming days are numbered since we got a kid on the way. so gotta use the time i have left as best i can, which means: 4090 it is for me 😅

This feels like a regression in several ways, locked down, non-mxm gpu, thin & light.

It is more than a feeling, bro. The regression is a matter of fact.

I honestly have zero regrets about abandoning laptops. I now only purchase inexpensive ($500~) off-lease business class machines for basic computing needs associated with business travel. The mere thought of wasting a larger sum on money on a compromised, disposable, overrated pile of trash made for gamers makes me feel sick to my stomach, and I hold nothing but contempt for the manufacturers of the pathetic thin and light rubbish that we are left with today. The notion of rewarding them with a purchase presents me with a personally irreconcilable moral dilemma. I wish I had moved back to desktops a couple of year sooner than I did.

Things really started circling the drain and sinking fast when the thin and light BGA filth became the norm. Things have gotten progressively worse with each generation and there is no reason to hold any hope that their race to find the floor of a bottomless pit will ever improve. The sick clowns that build the modern mobile trash being sold today view their lameness and mediocrity as a virtue.

one @Mr. Fox rant a day keeps the doctor / BGA sickness away 😁 always refreshing and a pleasure bro haha. tho i have the sinking feeling u are indeed correct, the NH55JNNQ machine i got for my lady will likely be the last highend laptop I ever purchased. Ill try to keep it alive and kicking as long as possible.

as for my Batman P751DM, ill likely be selling it off in parts (be on the lookout in the NBT marketplace for that!) to be able and use the money for the monster desktop and a new phone (waiting for the Pixel 7 series in Oct)

Speaking truth into a vast expanse of darkness feels good even when those words fall on the deaf ears of sheeple lacking the brain power and mental capacity to process them if they wanted to. Nonetheless, they are accountable for receiving truth and they will ultimately be without excuse and pay the price for not being smart enough to recognize it. And, in the end, we can revel in the smug satisfaction of being able to boast about having been the harbinger of their destruction.

Did Prema get you a modded bios with Raptor Lake microcode injected? If so you could try it on launch day.

Additional e-cores and larger cache means the P-cores will be even more power starved than Alder Lake at 125W unless they have seriously improved efficiency. Although it would be pretty cool to see 5.5-5.6ghz single P-core boost in a laptop with that chip if its possible.

nope not yet, well have to wait a bit for RPL firmware updates. and yes ure right regarding the limited power budget we have available. thats why its good to have the option to disable e cores and use the (expectedly) improved P cores. or maybe go with an RPL cpu that still includes the 8 P cores but less e cores. but then well have to check and see if worse binning would play a role...

stock bios nope @undervolting. but u can still use Throttlestop with a K sku cpu.

as for the heatsink, i dont think so. although we dont have a user here yet with the 3060 machine, do we?

oh damn dude, nice find! aliexpress? how do those custom fans fare vs. stock?

No, not Aliexpress, I rarely take anything from Ali, only when absolutely necessary. I have direct contacts with laptop suppliers and manufacturers of custom components in Taiwan and China. Therefore, it is easier for me to negotiate with them than to buy from intermediaries on Ali several times more expensive. As for the fans, I’ll say that they are not bad, they are quieter than regular ones and their flux density is higher at lower speeds, they do better

Ah, what is the likelyhood to order one of these to USA? Be happy to test out something that is an improvement over the stock radiator!

Ordering production is not a problem, I think sending to the USA is also possible, but it will not be fast in time and quite expensive financially.

that would have been my next question, if we actually do get any additional thermal headroom even without water circulation 🙂 good to have you as our guinea pig, bro! 😄

I personally did not test this laptop model myself, since I have no interest in it, I prefer picking in Clevo DTR

welp, you and basically everyone else in this thread. only issue being that Clevo DTRs are a thing of the past... this is currently the "best compromise" in a landscape full of BGA only garbage 😅
