Wondering what the current total user count is here. Unfortunately, it seems that laptopforum.net is gaining traction, not sure if it's real but they show about 140 currently.

Poking around I noticed members who have joined both. Is this really a direction we want to go? To be honest, I've got too many other forums on my plate and rather not join 2 additional ones with the same purpose. Hiew and Reciever have put in a lot of work here, it would really be a shame to go to waste if more and more folks just join the other one.

What can we do to help? What other channels we have to advertise this forum? It would probably help a bit if we're on a more "final" name. Are we going to stick to efgxt? I don't mind it, actually I think it's cool, but the other one having a more NBR copy/paste name, probably drove up their user count.

I'm by no means a long standing user of NBR (started to browse the forums around 4 years ago, and also techpowerup), but I saw through the - few - years, several users that had many years of "service" and reputation there, and to be precise @Reciever is one of those that always had something to add when I browsed every subforum of my interest. And so, it was the obvious choice to pick when I read that this forum was the fallback in case of emergencies.

With that said, and to be bluntly honest, the Admins at NBR should take a stand against the forum created by the very same guy that proposed to sell the NBR forum database on Ebay. I Know that they must have a lot on their plate right now, but that guy some john-who-knows-where-he-came-from is effectively dividing and damaging the surviving NBR community.

The name is a placeholder and I think that we will be able to settle on a new one that appropriately describes the community once things settle down a bit.  I'm not really in charge of that at all, just commenting based on the way that I saw the discussion going at NBR.  We needed a new site now but the name should be chosen with thoughtful consideration and represent who we are as a community without outright copying the old name which is TechTarget IP (I imagine it will be NotebookSomething).

You can see the full user list here.  128 members, but 30ish joined before the forum really launched and don't have any content (other than Hiew and Reciever).  You can also see an activity log here that shows when new users join.  We've been growing at a steady pace.  Total post count is now higher than the other site which had a ≈24 hour head start (that wasn't the case yesterday).

We should spread the word at NBR while there is still time, but without being annoying or "spammy".  I would suggest that you get in touch with other users at NBR that you have had familiar dealings with but who might not have heard of this site yet (you could post in a subforum you frequent, or in the "next chapter" thread, and tag a bunch of people... or maybe reach out via PM).  You can also drop a prominent link in your signature that might be seen by others before the site closes ("size" and "color" bbcodes help).  See my example on both counts.

I didnt see this earlier, thank you for the kind words. I do make the effort, threading the needle can seem impossible at times but most of the time I believe its worth the effort even if I have a few more gray hairs for the effort :P

Fully agree as well, but I can't help ask myself why did he open yet another forum now. Surely he saw there are two already splitting the community, why add to this? Why didn't he choose to talk to Reciever before opening his and plan to work together?

I know this is unpopular but I just can't sit on my hands when I see people act before thinking, even if some may have genuinely good intentions.

Now we ended up with a lose-lose-lose situation. We have absolutely nothing to gain by splitting the community 3 ways.

In any case, as I said before, I have no intentions of signing up on multiple NBRs. I honestly hope this one makes it, @Reciever and @Hiew are stand up guys who worked hard on setting this up. I'll keep contributing as long as I can and as long as people will still hang out here.

Thanks @Hiew and @Reciever, given the time constraints and all, you guys have done a great job of trying to keep the community alive and giving all of us a place to move on to.

Let's all make this new NBR home an even better version of what it was.

Hey guys,

Just wanted to say jump in and say thanks for putting this together, I had been on NBR since 2006 and was surprised to see such a good resource just disappear.  I mostly spent time in the Clevo/Sager and marketplace sections. I learned a LOT through it!  I hope this place will carry that legacy.

Thanks!

I dont know about a formal migration due to potential legal issues. Without further illumination of the options on the table my best case hope would be to have it included in the official / Owners lounge threads but still being hosted off site.

Thanks!  I didn't post much on the old forum, but it's good to be around.  Hopefully here will become a useful source of information too.  So many forums just aren't.

Yeah, best to keep that mess at a distance.  And a fresh start (with access to old content) is an opportunity.

Then it is just a matter of building back and extending the core ideology of the former forums. The most important thing was casting a life boat before the original sank so we can drift to a new island and rebuild.
