clevo p870km bios question and upgrade to rtx3080 on the way.

hi all ive got this notebook back in 2018. i flashed dsanke bios to support 9 gen cpus and initially started with i5 9600k. after one year  i went to 9700k always using latest version bios mod.

today i upgraded to dsanke rtx support bios and pc is working, but on ec firmware version it say by dsanke but didnt show version number .

now i also bought a new 3080 and it will arrive in the next weeks to upgrade from my 1070 to 3080 and do heatsink mod to fit with the card.

my questions are:

do i need to upgrade also ec bios version from tm model?

do i need some vga bios version to make it perfectly compatible with my notebook?

also i have a 17.3 1080p 60hrz panel and would like to upgrade to a 120hrz 1080p. i know i could get a quad hd, but using vsync the whole time make vga and cpu much more cooler.... and 1080p 120hrz should still get the 3080 not going 100% and be cold. i have the 200 watt vga heatsink. with double heatpipe. my 1070 never get hotter then 75° even on 35° celsius ambient temperature.

No need to flash the EC. When the card arrives put it in and look if you get a pic. Normally it works out of the box with Dsanke Bios. From where do you have the 3080?

i got it from ebay. seller in canada for 815€ship included 🙂

cant wait to boost my clevo... this notebook give me so good game experience.

ps: i always install control center and setup fan to overclock otherwise on automatic it will not make fan spin the right way and overheat gpu and cpu.

seller has 2070 for like 350 ship included..... i was like to get from 1070 to 2070, but needed more heatsink modification and  performance from 1070 to 2070 wasnt so much compared to 3080 so i went straight to 3080.

There is, the model number of the display is N173HHE-G32 and the display cable needed is 6-43-P8701-020-1L.

Though, I would recommend the 1440p 120hz display as running games in 1080p will surely bottleneck the 3080. Here is a chart Eurocom has made that has come in handy.

Clevo P870TM-G: Core i7 8700k @ 4.8ghz | Clevo RTX 2070 Super | 32gb HyperX DDR4 @ 3200mhz | 17" 1440p 120hz B173QTN01.0 Screen | 256gb Samsung 850 EVO | 500gb WD Blue SSD | Prema BIOS

Alienware 17 R1: Core i7 4710mq @ 3.619ghz 741 CBR15 (834 CBR15 @ 4.213ghz) | Dell GTX 860m | 16gb HyperX DDR3L @ 2133mhz | 17" 3D 120hz LTN173HT02-T01 Screen | 256gb mSATA SSD

Asus Zephyrus G14: Ryzen 7 4800hs @ 4.2ghz | GTX 1650 | 16gb DDR4 @ 3200mhz | 14" 120hz LM140LF1F01 Screen | 512gb NVME SSD

tnxfor the reply. i lost that page. after a bit ill go to qhd 120hrz.

now big problem is heatsink for the 3080. i think i will make a nex X clamp to block the heatsink. that is the easiest way i think other then buy some costom made heatsink for high price.

update: card is on delivery tomorrow. customs amount is 41€ so not that much 😄

i looked almost everywhere for a heatsink already done for 3080, but someone is air-water for 500€, then one dude offered me a vapor chamber heatsink for 800€ .... yes 800€for an heatsink when in 2018 one vapor chamber hs was 150€ .... and he told me he just make an adapter from 3080 4 hole to  old 4 hole , without doing any change in the vapor chamber.

i just ordered a copper 125x250x1,5mm from ebay and ill laserut it by some company; then modify it and solder to the 200 watt air cooler i already use for my 1070.

making the heatsink was a pain in the a.... took me around 10 hours to finish it. i went to the shop for laser cut but it was closed till 2 september, so had to cut all myself with a dremel and hand saw 😄

another problem was solder all back together.....

driver needed inf mod and driver signature disabled.

if anyone want i can post pictcure and all  of the work ive done.

max temperature  was 87° celsius

max power consumption by hwinfo was 149.8 watt 🙂

also, nice to see my lady`s 3070 Ti Laptop is getting EXACTLY the same result (117.2 fps avg.) as a 3080 at 150W 🤠

this is the work i have done:

remove che old mxm  holder that was touching the 3080, desolder old heatpipe and get back the 1mm copper for vram, make all measurement and solder all into a new cutted copper  of 1,5mm thick

in the picture the copper is dirty, but now on the gpu side is cleaned. next days ill clean also the top and paint with high temperature black color.

gpu reach max 87° then gpu core stay on 1395mhz.

cant attach picture directly, some of them was almost 10mb.

That is nice man. Looks almost the same mod that I had to do when moding the old DM for the 3.1B.

When I will afford an 3080 I will go for a different approach. I am thinking of a 3mm or 4mm thick copper plate 124x100 mm in which to CNC mill 2mm in the required places to form the place for the inductors and mosfets.

i remember that picture 🙂 the best and easy way would be to make a commper of same 1,5mm thick, but solder on the place where it touch the gpu die a copper of3-5mm like  vapor chamber do. then buy a 1070-1080 x bracket, cut them  and make an hole to screw to 3080 and then screw it to old holes of heatsink.

this is the way they do on vapor chamber at the cheap price of 800€ 😄

I have a similar question: don't know whether to post here or to make a new thread. In that case I'll delete this post.

I have a P870dm3-g with a Dsanke bios. Upgraded to i9-9900kf and it works fine with a 100mV undervolt.

Now I'm thinking about a RTX 2080, I know that on bios side I'm OK. Don't know if I need modifications to my vapor chamber to fit in an RTX.

Also, originally I had a Full HD panel 75hz. After bios upgrade I lost the G-sync, which I don't really care about, and dropped to 60hz (but then applied a screen overclock to 90hz).

Do you think I should upgrade my panel as well to get the best out of a 2080?

Btw 800€ for a 3080 is a heck of a steal. Respect.

regarding the panel upgrade, what were u thinking of, higher res? if so id stick to 1080p in your case since that would let u enjoy higher framerates for longer. u could, however, check if FHD 120/144/165 Hz would be an option for your machine.

I was almost exclusively thinking about higher res (1440p), but didn't know how big of a difference that would make on a 17.3 inch panel.

Second doubt was about potential bottleneck, but I don't want to go off topic.

If I can find a good deal I would gladly take your advice, probably go for the 144 or165hz. Thanks

Respect.

There were somewhere some pics of how to mod vapor chamber for RTX 2000 series but I cannot find them anymore, maybe someone who saved them might help you.

If you want to upgrade the display check this site. Pay attention that you will also need another edp cable.

You might have problems with the 165hz panel as it is not supported by the bios.

Yeah thanks, saved that pic as it will come useful. There were many guides on NBR. Now cannot find anything on the Web.

Afaik the vc is the same of the P870Km. But I haven't any tool (dremel or such) to make any mod, so for me it is absolutely key to sort that out before buying a new GPU.

Alternatively I need to keep an eye on aliexpress looking for a custom heatsink.

Basically I guess it's research time for me now, trying not to rush any decision as there are many factors involved.

Thanks again, your advices are very useful.

hi, dunno what difference the p870dm3 has respect my p870km. for the vapor chamber, if u have only  gpu direct contact and u have to use thermal pad for all the others componnet i think that ull be just fine without any modification, but just proper thermal pad thikness. what gpu u have now ? because i read that 2080 is a good gpu, but u will gain not as much boost  from a 1080 or so... also at whar price will u buy a 2080 ?

ive seen 3070 for like 350€ ...... (yes big heatsink mod required) and 2070 for 320€

i have a fhd 60hrz panel that started to do the dirty black cloudy spot inside the edge of it.   my problem is: keep 1080p and go 144hrz, or go 1440p 144hrz ?  running most of the game with vsync keep my gpu  muich cooler , and probably that's why my 1070 survided safe for 4 years without any problem even in summer time.

gaming now with 3080 with vsync give me max temp of 70° 😄; temperature that rise up to 87° if i use 100% gpu.

also changing edp cable means to complete disassembly the notebook....

That's a big good news I was not expecting 🤩. I remembered that some on NBR said that the vc is the same, and on eBay I found some vc on sale labeled as DM3/KM like if it is the same for both models. So I'm fairly confident that if you can fit a RTX in a KM you can do that also in a DM3. Not 100% confident, but a solid 95%.

Currently I have a 1080, I am aware it might not be a massive jump forward, but right now a RTX 2080 is the best I can get from my limited mod skills, and if I manage to sell afterwards my 1080 I might get back part of the money spent, keeping the mod relatively cheap.

As for those I have 700€ piled up so far. I've seen a couple of them at about that price, but I hope prices will go down soon.

Personal gaming experience (I'll keep it short in order to not go off topic) : I've always tried to keep GPU cool, had previously a I7-7700k, temperatures always around 70C° @ 60FPS. After the Dsanke Bios mod and upgrade to i9-9900kf (with delidding and undervolt) same game (I really can't explain how) runs at low 60° (like 62,63), so now I increased to 70FPS to see if it manages it well, and for some reason it does. Dunno if it was the last repaste or whatever, but it stays in low 60°.

In your case with a 3080 I would go for the 1440p, but I understand your concerns about keeping your GPU as cool as possible.

BTW I'm the least knowledged user here so feel free to disregard my tips.😅
