Hi Viktor, 

I am curious why would that happen? Does P870TM has a weak power delivery system? I mean Gtx 1080 was drawing more than 200w at times and no crash. Is the 2080S drawing way more (it is a 150w card)?

 

And by the way do you know if one can swap the memory modules and strap on the 2080 to make it a 16GB card?

As Runix said, why would this be? Is there some incompatibility in how the power is delivered or how the GPU tells the laptop how much power is being pulled?

2080S is a 200W card.

Ok, you are right (I saw that are different variants of the card, my bad for not looking at a clevo one), but still does not add up because GTX 1080 was a 200w+ TDP card and had no crashes. I am curious because you cannot blame the TM power delivery (especially on TM that has a way better power intake, mosfets ratted for higher amperage), than the rest of the P870 lineup. Also the power switching is done onboard of the card (the VRM is completely on the card itself).

So I am inclined to believe that is a bios/vbios bug that involves maximum clocks.

The problem lies in the fact that they cannot withstand the load of 200w + vrm of the video card itself, since the power management system of the video card in the p870 series does not correctly manage the load of this video card (keeps the tdp of the card constantly outside the limit of 200w) which leads to DrMOS overheating and emergency shutdown. The solution is to replace DrMOS video cards with more powerful ones. After replacing DrMOS, the card no longer crashes and can withstand a load of 240w tdp.

To be honest I thought that X170 has a different power delivery than P870. I will go on the service manuals to see the differences. You actually made me curious.

 

I can only imagine what the castrated rtx 3070 desktop chip... cough cough... RTX 3080 mobile can do with 240W.

So are you saying that the VRAM and core are designed to take up to 200w of power, but because some of that is lost as the power goes through the VRM that the P870 will try to cope and force too much power through the VRMs which gets them hot?

Alright, everything is making more sense now. The 2080 Super has problems working in the P870TM not because of any power problems, but because the 2080 Super is too powerful lol. The specific MOSFETs used on the Turing MXM cards get a bit toastier than the MOSFETs used on the Pascal cards. VIktorV is correct about the laptop doing an emergency shutdown because of the MOSFETs overheating. 

I was told the easier solution to this problem that doesn't require me to replace the MOSFETs is by adding a copper shim onto the heatsink where the MOSFETs are located when the card is screwed down. This is to decrease the temperatures of the MOSFETs allowing them to run more efficiently and not overheat and shut down the laptop.

Aren't the 2080 mosfets the same as 2080S? If so, why does the P870 does not shuting down with a 2080 with a 200W vbios?

Hi, i actually did not look closely because of the distinction between KM and TM!!! It goes with both Books the x16 PCIe lanes!:-) For my test was only one KM available. A TM goes but just as said. Before I answer your other question. Look at the second graphics card, what kind is it!?

Are you using a GPU enclosure? 

From what i know no AMD card is working with the P870 series due to failing to read the GPU sensors.

Why would the sensors be a problem:-)
You just connect the card to the MXM port with my adapters:-) Have a look at Subvendor! What kind of card it is

For now, I can only tell you that it is an adapter that allows you to plug desktop cards into the MXM port. I'm still testing...

Seriously I don't know have it exactly works (even the amd gpus) but I did detailed benchmarks and also compared to my normal pc with z170 mobo and getting almost same scores with any gpu..right now I have zotac gtx 1070 mini

Exactly, why does x16 work on the P870xx!!! That is the big question...It works because it is not the same adapter as for the P775xx. It is my own development for the P870xx series. This includes an internal solution to integrate a desktop card in the P870xx and the corresponding power supply with 12 V also internally via the P870xx!!!!:-)..My solution is tailored specifically for the P870xx.

It makes sense. It would be possible for P870xx to get x16 using a modified proprietary adapter.

 

It has x16 lanes allocated using two slots. The only thing that someone would need to do is just wire the first slot to first Tx/Rx PCI-E lanes of the external graphics card (1x-8x) and the other slot to the other half of Tx/Rx PCI-E lanes of the external graphics card (8x-16x). The BIOS might already automatically recognize and configure itself to allocate full x16 lane in this scenario for the EGPU. There might be some small detail I am missing, but its 100% doable. It's all a matter of configuration.

So it is a DIY GPU enclosure. Don't tell me you actually fit a desktop GPU somehow with according 12V power in the shell of a P870 all while cooling it. =D

 

Also the reason your AMD card works is because it is not an MXM card.
