GPU transcoding on which platform requires a membership? I know Plex does want you to have the pro version, but Jellyfin is free. -

It's pretty sad that my little 12700k can do 2x as many 4k transcodes than my 3080... -

I was going to eventually get a Xeon W for my server but I'm sad they aren't doing any with an igpu. Sounds silly, but nothing on the dGPU side can really touch quicksync at this time. Looks like I'll be using just a consumer cpu with ECC memory instead. Well unless Intel surprises me. I do want to build a Xeon W for the desktop though, lol. -
Ended up getting a great deal on a Supermicro 2u 826 case, two xeon e5-2640 E4 CPUs, and 384GB of DDR4 ECC memory. Already ordered a cheap Nvidia Tesla P4 gpu to make this into a fun backup/test server. Maybe I have a problem...

You won't notice any real difference. Synthetic numbers will look faster, but access times will be slower. The one advantage is you would have a single larger drive and not have to deal with two drives. One downside is that you are increasing your points of failure.

Logged in this am to see I have a "One Year In" badge. Wow I can't believe it's been one year since NBR closed down and thankfully @Recieverand @Hiewstepped up to create what eventually became NBT. I'm excited to still get to be a part of the experience with laptops/desktops and other hardware even if I don't have near as much time as I used to. What has the last year brought you? For me it's been a whirlwind. My daughter is now 2 years old and I have a 4-month-old son. I'm getting closer to graduating from residency and being done with all of the added stressors that my program likes to add to my life. And for the first time in a long time, I've had the same laptop and desktop since I normally upgrade quite often, lol. It's been a great albeit fast year to be certain. Cheers to you all for making this place fun!

My buddy is going to put together an unraid plex server with a 12600k + ASUS Z690-PLUS TUF Gaming WiFi D5 motherboard from MC (seems like a great value at $296 since the MB is only $50). Memory speed really doesn't matter too much, but figured I'd ask what people recommend here. Cost is priority number 1, but if I could get him something with hynix memory I'd prefer that. I think the cheap patriot DDR5 on amazon has hynix and is around $100 for 32GB. Any other thoughts? -
Acer AC100 mini server upgrade/mods. Should be interesting
Custom90gt replied to kojack's topic in Desktop Hardware
Depending on the type of RAID @kojackruns, it may be less than 32TB. I don't have my backup server running any type of redundancy since it only has 4 bays and it's my 3rd line backup. It also lives in my safe unless I'm actively backing up files to it. -

Sure, here it is next the the server: It's not a bad little build considering I have <$75 into it excluding the drives. -

Funny we are doing similar projects. I just put together an HP Mediasmart server and upgraded it to a quad-core xeon with 4GB of ram. I put 3x8TB drives and a 14TB drive in it for backups. It's not fast, but it runs UnRAID and is small enough to fit in my fire safe. -
Enable undervolting on your Dell XPS 9500/9510/9700/9710 (or others)

Ugh I wonder if the variables switched or if it's completely blocked now? Makes me not want to update the firmware on my 9510...- 7 replies

Well you've inspired me to pick up another Mediasmart EX495 for $50. I threw unraid on it and three 8TB drives and a 12TB in it for a backup server. I also picked up a 4GB stick of memory from ebay for $6 and a 4 core xeon CPU for $8. Right now copying files to the server is CPU limited much more than I expected (average write speed of around 75MB/s even without parity). The 4GB of ram helped a little, but I need to get this Xeon installed ASAP (but first I need to build a new VGA cable and am waiting for parts). Overall a fun trip down memory lane and kind of a cool little backup server. The only bummer is that the guy who owned the server in the past was a smoker and the thing was filthy (no where was it described this way). I spent a good 2-3 hours scrubbing the heck out of it with rubbing alcohol.

@Mr. Foxwhere did you end up picking up those sticks? I see Newegg has them, but for $350 a stick, lol. -
I enjoyed reading your blogs about your off-roading trips with your son. If I recall correctly, you were thinking about purchasing a new off-roading vehicle at one point?

Core 2 duo CPU upgrade in my acer aspire 7720? What is the max?
Custom90gt replied to kojack's topic in Components & Upgrades
I don't see your acer listed in your sig, what is the model number? -
I do love to see old members returning to this forum for sure. I wish Spartan would joint back up, but I don't know if that'll happen. I love having a bunch of different view points and knowledge sets. I know @kojackand I had numerous pages of back and forth with our disagreements, but I always respected his view points even if I disagreed with them, lol. Good to see you back.

Hah it's most certainly cheaper for me than my auto hobbies. My handle comes from a fox-body mustang that I dumped way too much money into. After that I moved on the Subaru STIs and then on to trucks (although I really miss my 2007 STI limited). When I have less money I typically work on PCs (or when it's cold out, lol) and if I happen to have a decent bonus it used to go to cars...

Hah more like spending needlessly on a hobby that I take too seriously.

Ended up buying a few things for the server: 4x10TB HGST SAS HDDs to run as parity drives 2x800GB MLC HGST SAS3 SSDs (with 15PB endurance) for write cache Unraid Pro when it was on sale Looks like I'll be putting together an unRaid server with a mixture of ZFS to better protect data. I think the next upgrade for the server will be a Intel W680 or similar setup so I can run EEC DDR5, but that will be down the road.
-
yep I built the vga output dongle as well to make things easier. It was a great little build, I regret selling it because it would be a nice little backup box. *on edit* I also forgot I upgraded the cpu to a quad core Xeon and added a whopping 4gb of ram to mine, lol.
-
Dang I used to have one of those little mediasmart servers. It was a great little machine before my plex collection got out of hand.
-
Ugh I wish you didn't have to go to ebay to sell this. Nothing like paying a huge fee and then having the government slap you with a 1099k for it. Glad you sold it though.

@Mr. Fox I know you're selling your 2080ti, but I came across this on [H]: https://hardforum.com/threads/ddr3-ddr4-ecc-unbuffered-2080ti-heatkiller.2023571/#post-1045517453 Not sure if the Heatkiller would work on your 2080ti, but figured I'd link it since it's a good price. Maybe a way to keep your 2080ti, lol. -
It will run on dual channel memory for the first 16GB (assuming 8GB soldered) and then for the amount thereafter it will run single channel. Example: 8GB soldered + 16GB in the ram slot = first 16GB in dual channel and last 8GB in single channel. It really depends on how much ram people utilize if asynchronous memory will be an issue or not. For most people it's not an issue because they don't often use 16+GB of ram anyway.
