  1. Silicon variance is definitely in play in regards to pull and overclocking. In the end, it is still a CPU. SP111 = meh SP115+ = golden land If you decapitate them and go DD, things tighten up real quick. I'd trade SP for a 2200+ fclk all day though.
  2. Awesome score! True story, I ran this before on my 7950X3D and was bummed over the low score but looking back at my screen shots I now realize I was running it at 1080p. I totally missed the 720p low setting!!! ---- Meanwhile in my neck of the woods.... Asus B650 Plus rock solid 6000 and 6200 on older M-die sticks with the 7600x and older BIOS but needed to flash to newer BIOS for 9800X3D support. New BIOS can not be downgraded. Fine, need 9800X3D support. Initial tests at 4800 with 9800X3D pass everything as expected. Time to use my old profiles for some testing. 9800X3D...only runs up to ~5400 on memory. Anything after that is flaky and sometimes will boot and other times not. Same settings. Figure it may be a weak chip, swap back in 7600x now even it won't run at its old settings and fails at ~5400. Exact same settings. 7600x before could do 2200 fclk for testing. Now it can't do anything past 2000. Same for 9800X3D. I've been fighting with it all weekend. Leave everything stock, fine. As soon as I press pass ~5400, non boots and crashes or if I make it to the desktop TM5 bombs out within minutes if not seconds. This is between two cpus, three sets of memory. Finger kept hovering over the Newegg Combo deal for a Hero + 9800X3D for $60 off and a free Corsair memory kit 2x16GB 6400 but then sanity kicked in and that would be another $1200. Time to search deals for something competent...and cheap. I still can not stomach paying more than $350 for a motherboard. I'll accept it sooner than later. Finally gave up the ghost and lucked up and found an open box ASUS ROG Crosshair X670E Hero for $299.99 on Amazon Warehouse/Reseller (whatever they're calling themselves these days). They had 1 only so I snagged it. Hopefully it won't be a miss. Bonus, I guess I get to now fret over SP ratings again along with everything else. 🤣
  3. 9800X3D arrived early from da Egg Ontario. Busy weekend so I'll see if I can find some playtime. 🙂
  4. Excellent work @Mr. Fox! I'm so glad you're having a much better time than the 5950x debacle. I found the 7800X3D and 7950X3D on the MSI x670e Carbon to be a much better experience than the 5800x on the MSI x570e Tomahawk in every way. Can't wait to see the memory properly cooled and where it takes you along with the 9950x on DD water....good times incoming! Nice! I really enjoyed my 10900k binning days. A solid year of snagging CPUs and testing them on desktop and laptop use. In hindsight, I think I ended up binning ~15 10900k's over that time and the LTX and SL samples were the cream of the crop followed by ironically an SP63 that was a beast too. My first lesson that SP is not everything but valid as the SL SP101 whomped an SP110 and an SP113 10900k I tested for X170SM usage. I was tempted to pick another one up, but I would be re-inventing the wheel so now I'll sit back and watch you and @win32asmguy post results to enjoy. Looking forward to the build out and pics!
  5. Whew, thanks for the heads up! I'll stick to Steam. It has pretty much been rock solid the last few years overall.
  6. I just noticed Fallout 76 is now on Xbox Gamepass. I signed up for a year on Steam for $100 = ~8.50/mo but you can transfer over your character and items to Gamepass now from Steam (not achievements). If they add World of Warcraft (they already have Diablo IV now), I'd switch in a heartbeat and save ~$6/mo AND have access to the rest of their library.
  7. 9800X3D back in stock at newegg. Singles already sold out but combos still available as of 4:50PM 11/18/2024 I managed to snag a single to test/play on my already pre-existing AM5 rig as the "How will WoW do and will it have chunk/cache/dip issues like the 7800X3D/7950X3D" question/itch just won't go away. I'm so used to WoW now on the 14900KS and near zero chunking (nothing you can do when zoning into populated areas/towns and all that player data) that if it is still there, it will stick out like a sore thumb. Plan on doing several tests with the first gen M-die 2x16GB and then current A-die 2x32GB both tuned along with tuning up the 9800X3D and testing the IMC / PBOvStatic and all that fun stuff. EDIT: 7:39pm they're all gone including all the combos with what I consider garbage boards and AIOs.
  8. When I had my Z590 boards and X170SM/X170KM, binning 10900k's was a pure joy including the LTX sample I had. Best easily was still that Silicon Lottery used chip I picked up off of eBay. That thing was a cool running monster in the laptops and did 5.4 on the desktop rock solid with an AIO. Asrock continues to grow and impress.... Agreed. They seem to be leaving the sad days of the Taichi Z3XX days behind. They were atrocious. All my recent dealing with their motherboards and video cards are have been solid. I'm still tempted to pick up an Asrock 7900XTX Taichi. 9950x looking good! What's the ETA on the delid?
  9. After the death of EVGA, MSI moved into my top slot and surprisingly Asrock is climbing quickly too. The MSI 1300w 12vhpwr PSU is crazy quiet. Then again, my EVGA 1600w P2 is crazy quiet and holding it down too. Congrats! Life is about to get crazy hectic in the best way.
  10. (While visions of 5090's and Taichi x870e equipped 9950X3Ds float through my head)
  11. If you're looking for 285k's, Central Computers has combos with discounts they will ship right to you If you want just the CPU, Antonline has them for $699 (marked up by $80) Also on Amazon from Ant and Spicy Bomb for $699. Definitely not worth ANY type of mark up (if at all), but you can see levels starting to catch up in pockets.
  12. Agreed, if it is a simple bios selection that is fine. If it goes the way of a "special" Bios only available to some and I have to track it down that is irritating but I'll manage. If it turns out to be a temperature detect feature enabled only, I will be pissed off.
  13. Very true! For my desktop, power draw is of zero concern, but for gaming laptops it does come into play. All I want is a DTR with a proper desktop AM5 platform. But you have to respect the PPW of AMD and especially Apple M4 with insane PPW. Just bonkers good stuff. Seeing as how the M4 Max is equal or better than M2 Ultra in so many benchmarks and tests, the M4 Ultra is going to be an absolute monster. Most likely to prevent any type of degradation but still a slap in the face of those who know how to use it responsibly.
  14. Glad you got it sorted Bro! Expo is definitely not as robust/mature as XMP and we all know even XMP has its issues. Best bet has always been manual tuning for AMD. It just works better. I slowly dial things in over the course of a week or so and lock it down. My 7600X could do 2133/2200 so I could go 6400/6600 properly but no such luck on the 7950X3D. I am so hoping AMD drops a dual X3D 9950X3D. To me, that's end game and then some. lol, that wallet pain. Time for a time out for cool down while you get it ready for those first day/week 5090 runs for us! 🤣
  15. 14900KS vs 9800X3D deep dive: Still has cache saturation issues (not much you can do about that). Dip has decreased in pockets. Depending on game, 14900KS wins or 9800X3D wins. No universal winner as expected. Final analysis: Still has some 7800X3D problems and max tune vs max tune, monolithic 14900KS is the better GAMING CPU overall as once you're outside of that cache for whatever reasons, Intel is still king. So what do you want? Basically, figure out what are your go to games and/or games that use a dynamic/JIT/Realtime texture loading mechanism favor Intel. Doesn't bode well for WoW and those dips/chunk on 7950X3D/7800X3D vs 14900KS. That has always been an issue for WoW and AMD. I prefer to have smoother gameplay at all times. As I noted before, dragonflight moves so quick with so many assets streaming that it along with raids just make AMD chunk/dip very badly. It basically doesn't exist for tuned Intel. I'm sure Fallout 76 would go from a greased pig to a greased pig on steroids with the 9800X3D. 🙂
  16. Intel is really in a precarious position right now and once mindshare and perception shifts fully to AMD, they could find themselves no longer the standard bearer for x86. Nevermind ARM gaining market share at an alarming rate and we have Nvidia coming on next with CPUs..... The fact @Mr. Fox and @Talon have finally taken the plunge to run systems in tandem and like what they see so far is very telling in and unto itself. Personally, I love dipping in and out of AMD, Intel and Nvidia hardware since 2005 with X2 and FX from AMD and going back and forth with ATI and Nvidia then AMD and Nvidia. I just love hardware!
  17. They are the G.Skill F5-6000J3040G32GX2-TZ5RK 2x32GB A-die sticks I picked up over a year ago. I held onto them for my future build (most likely x870e Taichi and 9800X3D or 9950X3D). I never used any of the built in timings. I just did them manually like I usually do. I don't have my timings on hand as the x670e Carbon and 7950X3D were sold (Ihave a lowly 7600x + Prime B650e on the secondary rig right now with 2x16GB 6000 M-die), but I think I posted them in this thread somewhere when I was helping out @Raiderman with his x670e Carbon. They had no problems running 6000, 6200 or 6400 even but 6000 tightened up much better overall. 7800X3D and 7950X3D both capped out at 2133 for 1:1. My 7600x can do 2200 so I should retest them in there. Everything was tested at 1:1. Edit: I went back and checked my attachments here and found a posting from July 2023 with some of my timings attached from these sticks on my 7800X3D before switching to the 7950X3D in December 2023: Now we're talking! 👊
  18. I'd like to officially welcome @Mr. Fox and @Talon to not only Team Red, but also more important the even rarer Team Purple for those of us who own, test, compare and enjoy both AMD and Intel at the same time. We meet every Wednesday at the local Dennys. 🤣 (You also have a bit more insight as to why my RGB color scheme is routinely purple FYI)
  19. Yeah, when it hits, it hits. Like I said before, something like Fallout 76 where it all fits in the cache is scary faster than Intel. Tuned across both, and especially with APO and 8200+ tuned, you see Intel inch ahead in WoW. I really want to test 285k, but that platform cost shut me down for now. I found Hogwarts was a ripper on X3D too. Can't wait to see the 4090 results with it. I'm curious about BF2042 because it uses so many threads. If the 9950X3D comes with dual X3D, I suspect it may take the lead but that's a big if. If it is still the single X3D design, I'm gonna be a little disappointed. 🙂 I would LOVE to see Intel embrace extra cache. Let's call it Intel Burst Cache (IBC).... 🤣 Absolutely true. For those of us who are going to manually tune, degradation isn't as much of a problem but as we found in the OC forums, people were still pushing too hard within their own control limits and still degraded their chips. Problematic for Intel out of the box and went on for so long and required multiple fixes which means even they couldn't figure it out during the first two mc updates.
  20. It's scary when you opt to run both platforms and realize the FUD on 13th/14th gen along with AMD. That's why I love that initial OOB experience of furnaces and/or piss poor performance then slowly tune and dial it in, set multiple profiles and everything is running smooth as silk with much better performance and good pull/temps. I saw where AMD is guaranteeing Zen 6 while Intel has been quiet on 1851. So compared to your tuned 14900ks, how do you feel about the 9800X3D vs it head to head for gaming so far? I'm (trying) to resist the pull till 9950X3D and snag one of those and a Taichi X870e. I do know tuned, the 14900KS 5.9 all core w/ APO + 8400 2x24GB definitely was the winner overall vs my tuned 7950X3D + 6000 2x32GB tuned for WoW. With how the 7950X3D/7800X3D was a monster with Fallout 76 even vs the 14900KS rig, I am sure the 9000X3D would be a ripper.
  21. AMD has higher latency overall than Intel on average but do you have a Zen Timings and Aida screen shot? I ran 2x32GB but at 6000 CL28 and tightened up and was in the low 60's IIRC.
