in canada we have a site called memoryexpress.com and they let you individually pick the parts then they build it and ship it for 100. I was thinking of going this route and might just snag a A770. I like dlss though as well as RTX not sure how it fares in RTX. also should I get a i7 13700ks or would any i5 be fine

I do not think that you can do it directly. You might be able to do it if you do the recovery flash procedure if the file is renamed correctly. Or, you might be able to get someone to mod it for you.

Yeah I can get into the bios with my 13700k, and I did the flashback bios.  My big worry is that it has some sort of check to ensure it's a "genuine" Asus bios or something like that. I need to figure out how to edit .cap files I suppose.

That's an anomaly as typically laptops are more expensive than desktops for the same processing power.

However it also doesn't help that CPUs in different devices are typically misleadingly named. For example, a laptop i9 is equivalent to a desktop i7, and an ultrabook i9 is equivalent to a desktop i5 running at low power. A tablet i9 is equivalent to a desktop i3, and thus is wholly undeserving of the i9 moniker.

Therefore, it can seem you're getting more processing power than you actually are from the laptop you buy.

This is a Linus Tech Tips video you guys would definitely find interesting:

Linus builds his own laptop out of desktop parts. Now that's a REAL laptop! I've seen industrial rugged cases like this before, but never one that looked like a laptop that you could actually install some respectable hardware into. This is the link to the case: https://www.alibaba.com/product-detail/New-design-16-1-Inch-LCD_1600578225544.html

I also found a version that can fit an ATX motherboard: https://www.alibaba.com/product-detail/Panel-PC-Server-Case-With-LCD_1600578236601.html?spm=a2700.shop_plgr.41413.11.3e411b1cQlT2wq

We can make some very interesting builds with these! No need for me to custom fab my own case anymore!

ahaha THE FIRST INSTANT THOUGHT i had when i saw this video pop up on yt was our forum 😄 Janktop FTW!

too bad covid sticks to good people and the like. sorry man.

I wish  the government designed a virus that stuck to rat feces. alot of people that dont deserve breath might get the right medicine. its terrible all thats going on around the world like covid and global warming(if its true). frustrating wanting to help but nothing I can do. if we all do one kind thing each day and it caught on like the movie pay it forward we would all be much better off and the world more balanced.

N on topic. I downloaded the newest nvidia drivers and im getting a nice bump in timespy 50 points. its good in games and about the same in benchmarks. also  one last thing someones hacked amd frame generation and DLSS. you can now get DLSS 3 with 2k and 3k gpus in some games. @tps3443 and myself will benefit, will have to see if its available for starfield

that janktops palm area hit 55c yikes. I don't think its more useful than a space heater and a minesweeper gaming replacement. when I see a 0.5in thick laptop with intel xe running project cars 2 without thermal throttling its always an indicator or genius engineering. however this does not exist. the geniuses are holding out ...as they push laptops thinner 0.3in

It is puzzling to me that a fan could be considered the "most anticipated cooling product" of the year or the "biggest disappointment" of the year. I can't relate to the idea of a fan being overly stimulating one way or the other. Being excited about a fan just seems kind of weird to me. Evidently, fans are a fetish for some people

Yup. Fans are more than just fetish😁 A single fan can destroy your reputation.

Well, it seems like a lot of fuss over a fan. As Roman said, had Igor's Lab not generated unrealistic expectations then nobody would be saying terrible things about the fan or Igor's Lab. The biggest flaw is the fact that it is priced about three times more than it is worth. Igor made a mistake. Not the end of the world. He is human and allowed to screw up once in a while. Unless we see a trend developing where this is a recurring issue, or he tries to deflect and make excuses to justify his test results should not harm his reputation. He should just admit what he did wrong and move on. The people that can't move on need to seek counseling, LOL.

Welp... it still works. Nice. I'm very glad. I would have been sad if it did not. I'm not sure what the "0071 Test BIOS" is supposed to do. Safedisk uploaded it to HWBOT. It didn't break anything, but I don't know what makes it different. My CPU and RAM overclock seem to be unaffected. Hopefully, it's something super useful that hasn't captured my attention yet, like disabled mitigations.

It is an major understatement when say I want Intel to massively succeed in the GPU space.....

Watching them make such inroads from initial launch with the A380 I picked up on drop to the 2x A770s I've used is astounding with their drivers.

Seeing their ARChitecture pay dividends for integrated to match and finally beat AMD is satisfying as they can start to encroach on AMDs hand held dominance and more.

Me as well.

Considering how stagnant the space had become after locking out many attributes from the user, given the timing Intel can swoop in and grab all that hype given that its appropriately priced.

Still interested to see what AMD does with their strategy in terms of architecture as that was quite interesting as well, but no idea when that will be available to the public.

Yup. It was very important for AMD to be sure that Starfield crashed/was impossible to game with Intel graphics. They would never do that with Nvidia. Or would they?😎

Stupid tech you should avoid bro @ryan for your coming PC build.

When will this sick trend turn around? More and more bling bling and continued price hike. This perversity won't stop. Only $3 lack and you'll see a black single fan for $50 USD (the white version is $52). That would mean +$1000 USD only for the fans that is visible in my pc box. Yup, that's perverse.

Add the Patriot Viper 8200 DDR5 kit to the do not buy list. This memory is trash. @tps3443found the same to be true in his testing. I was hoping to replace my generic A-die with a slightly better product, but it is more than slightly inferior. XMP1 and XMP2 both fail TM5 testing and increasing the voltage does not help. Tested with both the Z690 Dark and the Z790 Apex and the outcome is the same on both platforms.

It is ridiculous that the only DDR5 modules that have been good enough to keep are my generic green sticks and the G.SKILL 8000 kit I already own. Everything (literally) I have purchased hoping for something better has been utter trash. I think I am done wasting my time with the endeavor. It's pointless, and shameful how much defective garbage is being offered for sale. Two TeamGroup 48GB kits (including their so-called Xtreem memory), one G.SKILL 32GB kit and now one Patriot 48GB kit returned as garbage in the past 90 days.

These are the trash sticks to steer away from: https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1796763-REG/patriot_pvx548g82c38k_viper_xtreme_48gb_8200mt_s.html

Apex is running the G.SKILL 8000 kit 8600 CL40 24/7 stable and the Dark is running the generic sticks 8200 CL38 24/7 stable. I think I need to be content with the modules I already own and stop chasing the DDR5 unicorns.

welp i have the 1000 for the desktop. so far I found nothing.

laptop wise i can get a cheap 4060 laptop which performs similar to a 3070ti but i just dont see why id drop another 1050 for something to go from 60fps-to 90fps not much of a gain as far as experience goes. id be down to get another laptop if i did not have 4 laptops haha. yeah i am debating getting a mini pc with ryzen and just using geforce  now or if i can get a 3060ti desktop i will order this second but im unable to find anything. im going to try memoryexpress pc builder.

ill report back hopefully the build is ok. like a ryzen 5 or i5 12th gen..ok enough rambling brb

3060ti i5-12th gen

are you guys sure desktops are cheaper than laptops? feeling like desktops and laptops did a price reversal recently.

yeah the best i can get for 1000 is a 3060 desktop. im going to wait two months or when my accident money comes and just buy then. I should be able to get a decent rig then. would you say a 4080 laptop is a better buy than a 4090 desktop. whats the disparity i dont know off the top of my head. i think a 4080 laptop gets 22000 in time spy and a 4090 30 000

What?  Not even close, from what I remember a desktop 4090 is around  75% 80% better then a mobile 4090...so no way a laptop 4080 is a better buy then a 4090.

There is no such thing as a "good laptop" and a laptop is never a better product than a desktop of similar value. All laptops are a poor value when purchased new. They are all garbage.

Those Patriots are absolutely crap! They will run the stock XMP2, but at what cost? They have no head room at all. I tuned and tuned and tuned, and could not even get 8400c36 to pass stability. Which my own Gskill 7200’s easily manage this and some. I think the best rams available come at a price though. And such ram is your very own Gskill 8000 48gb kit which was originally like 500 dollars. They are very very good. Next up is the Gskill 8400 which is easily the best ram you can buy today. But it’s gonna cost you $399.99 dollars. I have talked to people who own them, those guys are running 8400c36 with like 1.43V VDD. My rams are at about 1.560V for such speeds lol. They are well binned and out of stock 99.9% of the time.

My Gskill 8200’s will be here today though. I hope they are golden, but I’m okay with just middle road good too. I’m just after something slightly better than my 7200’s. I think Gskill is the only reputable XMP ram that is worth buying right now. Expensive for top dog, yes! But I had a gift card on Amazon, so I grabbed my Gskill 8200’s for $250.00 not including tax.

There are similar options down below in the "More like this" section. None are off the hook amazing, but all are better options than a laptop at the same price. All are upgradable, unlike the one way dead-end street we call a laptop.

welp i have the 1000 for the desktop. so far I found nothing.

laptop wise i can get a cheap 4060 laptop which performs similar to a 3070ti but i just dont see why id drop another 1050 for something to go from 60fps-to 90fps not much of a gain as far as experience goes. id be down to get another laptop if i did not have 4 laptops haha. yeah i am debating getting a mini pc with ryzen and just using geforce  now or if i can get a 3060ti desktop i will order this second but im unable to find anything. im going to try memoryexpress pc builder.

ill report back hopefully the build is ok. like a ryzen 5 or i5 12th gen..ok enough rambling brb

3060ti i5-12th gen

are you guys sure desktops are cheaper than laptops? feeling like desktops and laptops did a price reversal recently.

if you guys can find a deal ill pm you something. it has to be better than my laptop and under 950

You're looking at prebuilts right? In that case, you're gonna be paying a premium over building one yourself. A prebuilt desktop should still be less money than a laptop with the same processing power though. Maybe it's a pricing glitch in your region due to market factors and hopefully things return to normal soon.

no the 4080 is at 18 000 the 4090 is at 30 000 so like 60 percent faster. but the cost of a 4080 laptop is like 70 percent of a 4090 desktop. its all good im getting a desktop either way because you can tinker and upgrade. laptops are unable to be upgraded and mxm is basically dead, i was interested in laptops to begin with becuase of the idea of mxm and i just never swayed away liked the idea of folding and moving it, but after having laptops for 4 years or so i really dont move it anywhere, a tablet and desktop makes the most sense. and yeah i cant find anything better than my laptop in desktop form for less that 1000

prebuilts or as bro @Mr. Fox mentioned used seems to be the way to go, you can get a pretty decent system for alot cheaper than building. I know nothing about desktops and tried building a budget system with memoryexpress and it was north of 1400 whereas a prebuilt with better specs was clocked in around 950-1100

Any caveats? Does the prebuilt utilise industry standard components, is it upgradeable? Do you know exactly what components are used? Has the particular prebuilt been well reviewed by someone remotely reputable? If the components are not specified, would it be fair to assume the cheapest to deliver are used?

welcome back @Etern4l 🙂

yes prebuilts sometimes can be upgraded, the omens/asus/msi/ect cannot technically be upgraded, but some of the generic name branded ones can, alot of facebook market place ones are generic. no name just built from the ground up but they still hover around 1000.

Where did you get those numbers from? If < 4090 desktop card only offered 60% more performance than a wimpy power castrated 4080 Mobile I would throw my 4090 graphics card down the toilet.
