I was working out costs as I might switch to desktop but a i5 11th gen and a 3060 desktop are just under 1000 bucks....that includes nothing else no monitor no mouse or trackpad no ram no MOBO nothing.....its not looking good for the switch

unless of course you have a better place to buy parts than new egg

Check out Micro Center (Inland Store) bundles on Amazon. Both Ryzen and Intel, starting around $350 USD for mobo and CPU. You can definitely get it for less and maybe get something more powerful.

Intel make a fool of themselves. Optimize for benchmarks. I wonder how far they want to go to complete in 3D mark benchmarks bs Nvidia’ and AMD. And I expect a driver mess long time forwards.

For now, Intel’s APO only affects TimeSpy and Port Royal tests. With the previous driver the A380 scored 5241 points in TimeSpy Graphics test, whereas with the new driver and APO disabled the same card scores 4449 points, that’s a decrease of 15%.

https://videocardz.com/newz/intel-arc-gpus-lose-up-to-15-performance-in-3dmark-timespy-test-with-advanced-performance-optimizations-disabled

Read the comments section. Maybe exactly the buyers Intel want. Intel’s lead graphics designer Raya should be fired. He ruin Intel’s reputation.

Yep, driver mess from Intel is today’s “word”. Exactly as I expect/expected. Maybe Intel should have waited with graphics cards until after next gen Nvidia/AMD graphics cards? And of course they didn’t want launch a high end card wit all their problems. Why not just put all their money into iGPUs? The CPU package is already filled with that filthy.

I would also like to say, I will still own a gaming laptop I just wont be upgrading every month lol...Ill keep this for 5 years(if it lasts) and get a desktop..I still enjoy laptops and the wow factor of look at what this small device can do but thats rapidly being replaced by the super phones..My s21 ultra does grid autosport at like 120fps and looks just as good as my 3060 pc..it fits in my pocket..I think my itch is just to have a great cell phone decent laptop and a decent desktop...

like I might even get into android benchmarking as there is alot of software to bench and the capabilities have skyrocketed with the help of new deep learning AI (photos/videos/chat bots/ect)

also to stay on topic I cant figure out port royal

image.thumb.png.14676552f190f3e236906d6786024b03.png

one is 191/220 one is 180/220

both had great temps cpu at 3.8ghz on 8 cores

yes you guessed right the higher overclock was the lower score, also when I get 9200 in timespy I run port royal and net like 4200...when Im getting low timespy scores its around 5000?

anyone else experiencing this?!?

image.thumb.png.0c2961a2826bfa2d2c3b9f3c5e6b1b18.png

4261 seems a bit high...Ill need to see where this stacks up as I dont normally test timespy extreme...but I think timespy is dead now as people are getting like 50k 389fps

looks like 4200 is still under a 1080ti. the gap between desktop and laptop is pretty huge when a overclocked mid range 3060 can't even beat a 1080ti from like 5.35 years ago.

also if your wondering if a 3060 is enough for gaming as its weak at benchmarks....it is just tweak the settings

here is project cars 2 with basically tweaked max(looks like ultra but its not) and Im clearly getting over 200fps on the most demanding track with the most demanding weather......in typical races the fps is between 250-400fps..

True, in the end no laptop will compete to desktop build outs especially with the ever widening cap between power draw and the 4000 / 7000 series on the horizon. This next generation of CPUs and especially GPUs is going to widen that gap even more.

Depending on power efficiency mobile AMD may end up being the king for the next generation but we will see.

At this stage of the game, I'd wait for next gen across the board before building out anything with new architectures, DDR5 continuing to mature and new PSU standards.

I went from a 1060 laptop with a 8750h so im happy with like double the power....its fun benchmarking but im going nowhere with this laptop...it overheats and I think I might have to fix that with liquid metal and a cooler....not sure im a rookie with newer thin and lights....all laptops seem to be thin and light, heck I thought this laptop would be heavy and thick with great cooling judging by the reviews but nope its 0.9in thick and light..it just needs to cool off....any ideas? im thinking liquid metal but I risk frying my system if its done wrong....IC diamond maybe? ideas

id go with a simple repaste first, those out of the factory paste jobs are not always the best 😅 then take it from there, check the heatsink to die fitting to determine if liquid metal would even make sense, then also consider replacing thermal pads with higher end ones.

Depending on pairing pressure, I'd give nanogrease extreme a try. Good fit, I'd go with Kingpin or Kryo Extreme.

I've yet to encounter a laptop that hasn't benefited from a proper clean install and a repasting. I'm getting ready to crack open the GL66 Pulse in my sig this afternoon and repaste and double check because it is overheating even running single thread.

sometimes its not that straight forward. doesnt have to be the paste itself, it might be its age (dried up), bad heatsink fit, the amount applied (too little, too much), etc. so first things to check would be heatsink fit with a fresh paste application and compare if fresh paste by itself already helps. after that u can tune for high-end pastes and get those "up to 6C" difference under ideal conditions 🙂

as for the thermal pads, high end ones tend to draw away the heat from the core components and can actually also lower core temps just by improving the overall board temps.

To give you an idea, I repasted the IdeaPad 3i in my sig because even with an i5-1235u it was thermally throttling. It went from hitting 96c to topping out at 84c. I repasted with Kingpin as the heatsink had a good fit.

I repasted the Nitro 5 in my sig because the GPU was hitting 80+ and CPU was hitting 90+. I repasted with nanogrease extreme because the pairing was a bit off and temps were higher with Kingpin. Repasting with nanogrease lowered temps by ~10c across the board.

Same for the X170SM-G because the pairing pressure is very sensitive so I went with nanogrease for best temps. It went from thermal throttling to sitting in the 80s for CPU and 60's for GPU.

With this GL66, thermal throttling CPU and 80's for the GPU so we'll see where this goes but I can almost guarantee temps will plummet.

i want something thats upgradeable. buy now then bit by bit upgrade over time...why?

i was looking at timespy scores over 50k and my current 2300 dollar laptop doesnt break 10k...pretty big gap and i think id enjoy 4k/120 gaming

Because the last time you opened a thread you were asking for more than your budget limit permitted. Going from that to 4k120 is worlds apart.

Unless of course your financial situation changed then go ham lol

as for the thermal pads, high end ones tend to draw away the heat from the core components and can actually also lower core temps just by improving the overall board temps.

Can add in. Don’t go with the high performance pads as 17w/mk if the laptop has a awful heatsink (bad pressure). Softer lower wattage pads often beats the harder high performance pads as l already mentioned.

Highest thermal conductivity pads  is more expensive as well. Aka wasted money.

I have good experience with the slightly cheaper Gelid Extreme 12w/mk pads.

oh ok cool guys..

Just got back from best buy bought a can of air.....sprayed my heatsinks should give me better temps also.

its just that stock with this model temps are supposed to be great kinda like the helios 300, mine had a build up of dust....ill post benchmarks of r23 and time spy..i think my old max was 10k cpu in timespy and 12000 in r23 so lets see if it even matters getting and using an air can.

This.

I had some fujipoly 17W/mK pads I used before and they are very hard with low compression. While I am sure they do actually transfer heat better than lower end pads, the problem is you have zero margin of error and can compromise the pairing pressure if off at all. In laptops where pairing pressure is vital, that can be the difference between 5-15c (or more if that bad).

I prefer lesser rated pads with more squish because you have low to no pairing compromises for the GPU or CPU. I just use thermaltake 12.8W/mK pads that seem to be sold under all types of names and they work just fine and give me the squish I need.
