It is possible you will be limited with regard to multipliers and undervolting so unless you get a great deal on a 1290E I would pass - even a 10850K will be a better option and if you want to have a decent shot at above average silicon go for the 10900KF.

Yes, not cheap! You have to order something else and it's more worth it.

I take it you got the SSD heatsink, too - how are temperatures with it?

That laptop must weigh about 12 lbs with all these goodies installed - that is quite some weight in such a relatively compact package 🙂

Hello community!

I have an issue with my XMG170SM-G. Sometimes, I want to run the machine overnight, as I have some programs running (either some AI calculations doing or some automatic ebay-bidding). In order for the machine to stay on and not go into sleep mode, I usually play a 24h video from youtube. The Laptop is plugged into the cable (battery removed).

The problem is that the laptop goes to sleep after a random period anyway. Tonight, for example, the video only played to 4h 35min 40s before the laptop went to sleep. I am suspecting, that the issue might be youtube, as I've experienced before that videos sometimes stop randomly from playing.

Can you think of any solution?

Thanks

I'll be putting my X170SM-G up for sale in the For Sale forums in the next couple of days. I have too many laptops and just picked up another laptop so I need to sell off 2-3 of them for balance.

I'll also be offering it parted out so if enough people want individual pieces I'll go that route.

Still under warranty till 11/26/2023 full accidental coverage.

Just serviced from ZtecPC with brand new motherboard, 2080 Super and heatsink.

Partout would be laptop, GPU and binned CPU (still on the fence with the CPU. Might keep it for my X170KM-G).

Temp is good!

I bought it to make the temperatures better and better than the factory heat conductive disk ...

I bought laird tflex hd90000 thermal pads separately.
The screws included with the heatsink fit perfectly, they are specially increased in length.
As I said earlier, without water, the temperature of the processor is lower by about 10 degrees compared to the standard heatsink.

My heatsink finally arrived, though it seems I got some contact issues.

With regards to screws: springed white long ones on the gpu and black ones on cpu I gather?

I used the aliexpress scheme for pads but yeah some seem to struggle with contact.

Yes that's right.
Show a pic of the pressure of thermal paste on the GPU and CPU on heatsink side, this will help determine the problem.

That's the problem, it is fine (thermal paste on gpu is kryonaut and conductonaut on cpu btw) on both sides. I'mma open it back again and check

@joe4kyo then where did you get that something is wrong?

Ok so I dismounted and checked the pads and thermal paste on gpu side. It seems bottom side ( towards cpu) has less contact.

I triple checked pad thickness with the picture guide and indeed after another test they show regular pressure on all components.

Pity the gpu seems not that lucky.

Pic quality is terrible but every pad shows signs of normal contact.

Edit: checked pressure contact without any pad whatsoever, issue persists, and it so happens the heatsink is slightly bent on that side, gonna try and fix it and see if it is enough.

Today I have arrived at the expected package!

I asked for safe packaging and the box was boxed!

From 13,000 km away, it came here safely!😃😉

nice, let me know if you test in on air what temps you get.

these are mine (stress tests gpu side) after numerous attempts at checking contact etc :

I could try changing gpu screws to something else +washers and or springs yes..last thing I can do

In principle, each screw has a place, there are 2 types of screws in the package. Spring and black, CPU and GPU arresting screws are spring, the rest (black) go to the free space. Or isn't it that simple? Pull it as long as you feel good "feeling" and squeezing.☺️

Yes, figured as much, indeed cpu temps are fine, gpu are not, even after adding washers it's still too hot. I also replaced the old stock cpu IHS but no go there either.

Still attempted your approach. Long or short springed screws do not fit in the cpu and neither do short springed onto the gpu

Your hotspot should be around ~76 and GPU around ~65:

If your temps are that out of bounds, try switching to a thicker thermal paste not LM. The problem could be contact issues and if you don't have an optimal pairing LM and it's very thin nature is a liability instead of an advantage. For LM to truly shine you need to make absolute sure your pairing is tight and optimal and on laptops that is sometimes hard to achieve.

ran the same test with the new heatsink, pads, washers, kryonaut on gpu, still a good +10C offset on both gpu and hotspot. even with / without copper IHS.

oh well
