I also heard about G sync issues with 144hz fhd screen, also, I am still not convinced there is nothing to do bios wise to make it compatible, and there's no 15w boost so it's base 150w

I would expect the hardware to be fully used! This is as if the processor can only be used at a basic clock and "OC" cannot be applied with it. 🤨😞

at that point you start to question if it is worth it

I think this was a barebone and it did not have a GPU so why not?

It will give better performance than the 2080 Super with less heat and double the memory so a win-win-win.

Yes, my X170SM is from System76 using their open firmware. I was also going to ask you what CPU microcode Premamod is using. Mine is using an older version CA but I have heard that EC may be better.

By using a custom profile I did get my HyperX 32gb dual rank kit working at 2933 cl17 1.2v. Originally I was trying for 3200 cl18 1.35v but that would not boot with a stick in channel A.

Sorry for the super late reply to this message. I completely forgot about it. Better late than never.

The CPU microcode version according to CPU-Z is Q0/G1.

Is it really better performance with 50W less?

Doesn't the 3080mxm have 12gb? Which means 4 more than the 2080s

The performance is on par with 2080 Super mobile from my test results:

https://www.3dmark.com/compare/spy/45874152/spy/45854327

3080 mobile has 16GB memory, better 8nm process node, supports resizeable bar, better CUDA core utilization with FP32/INT32 redesign.

Dynamic boost 2.0 needs Nvidia PCF support in the ACPI tables, which did not exist in the X170SM bios. Gsync is enabled by a driver whitelist which uses combinations of machine identifiers, vbios identifiers and display EDID identifiers. Fast Sync still works as an option for games configured to meet its criteria.

Yes it is, 150W 3080 > 200W 2080 Super.

The difference may not be big in raster performance but as per the post above mine there are other advantages and when one has to order a GPU anyway and the 3080 is not much more, why not?

I also just checked and if you look at the 12509 TimeSpy score from @win32asmguy you can see it is within 0.06% of number 2 in the all time 3Dmark rankings for the 2080 Super and only @Prema in number 1 position is really better and I am pretty sure that is without making much of an effort:

Best I got out of my 2080 Super in the SM-G was a little over 12200 and I would expect to get to at least 13500 on the 3080.

Thanks, although I think Q0/G1 is actually the stepping. My microcode version is CA according to HWInfo64. From what I have read from some enthusiast desktop forums maybe version EC is a good balance of performance and stability.

we'd need a new bios, like a port from the km-g or something

Been thinking of swapping my 2080S for a 3080 for a while now so am trying to get as much info as I can. VRam alone is a big reason to these days anyway

According to PCSpecialist (UK) manufacturer, 3080 is not in the X170SM-G machine and has no BIOS to support the X170SM-G machine.

In theory even the stock Clevo X170SM bios should boot with the 3060/3070/3080 mobile installed, just no Dynamic Boost, GSync and the driver has to be manually installed on Windows.

Obviously it would be a modification but then the 3070 and 3080 are running on P775, P870 and X170SM-G chassis of several members so it is possible.

The question is if you need it - if temps are fine and you are at mostly gaming with FHD resolution I would not expect it to be that big of an upgrade but if you want maximum power savings / a quieter system or could use some added GPU memory then it may be worth it.

Whilst losing g sync and not getting dynamic boost

speaking of the gpu driver, is DDU + nvclean install sufficient or there's something else that needs to be done?

I doubt that dynamic boost will be much of an issue, probably a 5 to 7% reduction in performance but still better than the 2080 Super. The lack of GSync could of course be an issue for people who need it but everybody has to answer that for himself.

look at the bright side: less heat, lower temps 😄 Check PMs please

Yes indeed, for a non-gamer like me who already lost G-Sync with a new panel it would be quite tempting 😄

I don't even know, but I want to step forward, not one forward and two back. 😄

Order of boot probably. Start loading opt default first. Then check boot order or directly boot from wherever windows installer is.

Also, 3080 gave you any issue?

Waiting for heatsink/gpu stil to arrive. Doing it with the 2070 thats inside now

ive tried boot order but there is nothing in it.. also reset to default settings i already tried. Direct boot from file also doesnt work 🧐

nvm i forgot i used the stick for a windows 7 install and it was set to mbr 😅 working now

this laptop got a 240hz gsync screen in it
