Which Thermal Paste to buy and apply (Traditional and Liquid Metal)

Recommended Posts

Phobya Nanogrease Extreme is less viscous than SYY-157 which tends to be better for a desktop CPU but worse for a notebook, this needs to be said in a notebook forum. The 2022 version of SYY-157 isn't as good as the original version however, in fact it's 2 degrees worse on my notebook. Another lesson why the thermal conductivity number doesn't tell much. This may not explain the poor longevity and this is speculation at this point.

Remember what the chinese longevity test said:

Quote

it is actually the best thermal paste in term of thermal cooling, this is because in nature they appeared to be more dry with higher viscosity and lesser silicone grease oil content, result in better thermal conductive material content.

However due to lesser grease oil, once baked the evaporation rate is so much faster and easily harden compared to those with higher silicone grease oil content (mx4 is the representative)

Kooling Monster is saying this:

longevity.png.aef53db7ef4f117224e63e577adc7ffa.png

Speaking about Kooling Monster, they send me a refund and I get a new paste. Seems like the missing paste was just a mistake.

It's not about the picture, it's about the text from both Kooling Monster and the chinese baking test. That's the only explanation I can think of, even though I doubt SYY-157 degrades so fast for everyone, otherwise the Amazon rating section would have been full of complaints. Beside this the thermal conductivity rating is mainly a marketing rating, some have to learn the hard lesson. He purchased it because of the high thermal conductivity......it's not so simple. And why not try Alphacool Apex 17W/mK then?

Yes, it's not so simple - apart from the measurement issues (including the potential for fake numbers being advertised by less scrupulous manufacturers), you also need the paste not to disintegrate in a matter of days lol.

Amazon reviews are definitely not reliable. A ton of fake ones, and the negatives can be suppressed. I have personally had my negative reviews not appear at all. No communication from Amazon, just ignored.

Hallo guys, I hope you are doing well...

Just got mine 7950sp paste yesterday.. I also made a mistake and ordered paste, not the pad. I wasn't sure how to apply it and did spread it across the cpu and the gpu die and waited for about 20 minutes for curing proces (i hope i didn't must wait for 15h to cure) and then installed heatsink. I am experienced with repasting and this is my first time to spread it, i always used dot method..but anyway, i have legion 5 r7 5800h with rtx3070 (gpu temps were never a problem), and before repasting cpu temp spikes to 102°C in need for speed heat (cpu hungry game, I don't know why 😅). Yesterday, short after repasting i tried nfs heat, and i saw a little improvement, in the loading screen i had 98°C and than it settles it's down to mid 90s.. today, it is something new happening, at the very beginning of game it goes up to 94, and than settles down to 86 (spikes to 88) and stayed there for about 1 hour, i thought afterburner is stuck but it isn't.. gpu stays at 79 all the time, spikes to 80... So, i think when phase changing happened temps go down, and stayed there without throttling... Only thing that bothers me is cinebench r23, in performance mode cpu goes up to 100.4°C and stays there, but power is good, never hit 80W before for 10 minutes constantly, and score is also good, just little above 13k.

Maybe I can apply the paste a little better (it was pretty bad applying because it is very hard to spread it equally but i think those are big improvements.

I'm over a month in on daily use with SYY-157 and it's still the best paste I've used to date. Both idle and load temps. That includes Phobya NE, CoolerMaster MasterGel Maker, Noctua NT-H1, and Thermal Grizzly Kryonaut. A major difference in use may be I'm on a direct-die laptop, not a desktop CPU with IHS. Any chance you got a fraudulent product? I purchased directly from SYY Store, $9/4g. Or perhaps they just have very bad QC?

I waited for about 20 minutes... I ordered mine from AliExpress, and there I saw instructions to wait just 15-20 minutes to cure...

Small update, last night i played nfs unbound, maxed graphics, notebook elevated a little bit, temps were 81 on cpu and 73 on gpu for about a one and half hour of gameplay...

Today I will do stress test again, both cinebench r23 and aida64 and will share the results...

Here are my results. I played Cyberpunk for about 15 min. right after the stress test, and played NFS Unbound for about 30 min. Temperatures are very stable, never saw this stability on notebook before. Cyberpunk is on ultra graphics with Ray tracing on ultra and DLLS on balanced, and NFS Unbound is also on ultra graphics... I think NFS games are not very well optimized for PC so I have higher temps..

Before repasting I easily hit 95-102 when gaming.. Apparently the factory thermal paste was bad..

I hope this one will last longer...

I got my new Kooling Monster KOLD-01 and some other pastes. I don't have time this weekend, so I just made a quick test with Thermalright TF9 and Kooling Monster KOLD-01 seems to be a very good paste. The unique part is the consistency, it's nothing like TF9 or basically all my other top performing pastes. This paste is much less viscous (at least when I spread it), more like a medium viscous paste. Even MX-6 is more viscous (and performs worse than TF9). I was sceptical therefore but to my surprise it performed basically identical to TF9. I have some other pastes to test and need to double check next weekend.

I forgot to mention, on Cinebench r23 with performance mode I have instant thermal throttling with 100.4C temperature, now is barely 90C, which is remarkable for the R7 5800H.

Great results man!. 😄

It should last for a while because i am almost at the 6 month mark and my temps are still good. I recently cleaned my fans last week because they was getting kinda dusty and my temps went down a bit. As long you do that every few months you should be good!.

I finished my new test. It's not comparable to earlier tests. I lowered the fan speed to increase the CPU temperature. Because of the low ambient it was too low. Kooling Monster KOLD-01 and Aerocool FUZION are both great, big recommendation. Both are also quite easy to spread, although I would say Kooling Monster KOLD-01 is a little easier than Aerocool FUZION.

I have had my Nocuta paste on both my notebook, and workstation for about a year now, and it's been no difference in temps after the initial drop when I installed it first.  I guess it's still in the full contact mode inside there...I have lots left so I will keep using it, if I have to repaste every year or so, so be it.  Seems to be working great for me so far!

Linus Tech Tips tested Honeywell PTM7950 phase change thermal pad a few weeks ago:

No doubt this would work really good on my notebook. I haven't tried it yet because it's not available in my country, maybe I will buy it from a chinese seller next year because I'm curious. In this test the traditional paste (Noctua NT-H2), Thermal Grizzly Conductonaut Liquid Metal and PTM7950 performed similar on a RTX3070 after 15 minutes. The PTM7950 pad needs a bit more heading time to work best. But why is the Liquid Metal not better than the traditional paste there?

This week I will try out Thermalright TFX against Kooling Monster KOLD-01 and Aerocool FUZION. TFX was always the best in my initial temperature test and based on my last test KOLD-01 and Fuzion may have a change to match or beat TFX in the initial temp test. TFX degrades quite fast in my notebook, I wouldn't use it anyways.

And there is not so much interesting traditional paste left after testing around 70 pastes in the last 2 years....maybe Kingpin Cooling KPx, Thermagic ZF-EX, Zezzio ZT-GXS have a chance to beat TFX in the initial temp test. The thing is even if they could both ZF-EX and ZT-GXS seems to be similar dryish as TFX and therefore I'm sceptical about the longevity.

Friend of mine used thermalright TFX  for a year now and found this today when he doing his yearly maintenance work on his GE76 Tiamat.

As you can see it looks like the paste was flowed from one corner to the other.

anyone has the same experince?

He had no performance or heating issues.

win32asmguy first reported this in the dell Precision forum, but now the PTM7950 is available in ModDIY. According to their website they ship from Hong Kong but to all countries. I don't know if that's better as if it will ship to your country, and the 80mmx80mm price is currently $48.58 USD, twice as much as I bought from ebuy7 7 months ago
