Tried getting Dell Power Manager onto the Dell prec 5540, goes to the finish line then stops \ uninstalls.

u might want to try older versions of the power manager, might be that the current version have a minimum windows version requirement inbuilt. the only issues ive had so far with ltsc 2019 based on w10 1809 were such instances.

Indeed, try to find a version from 2019 and then move up from there.  I think that Dell generally expects Windows 10 users to stay current.  (That said, I haven't had trouble with this + LTSC 2021.)

Thanks for the input. Went through the old versions at the very start of trying to install, all failed.
Looking up google. seems there are\has been tons of similar problems, so laying down the sword ftm. Good that it at least works on ltsc 2019  2021.

ps sorry, should have posted the question in the Dell board...

What settings are you referring to?

I basically can't find time to work on it but I do have plans to tidy it up some later this summer and release a proper version 3.0 with documentation and everything.  But I doubt that new features will be coming any time soon.  (It's also lower priority for me now since manual fan control isn't possible with newer Dell laptops anyway.)

• In the registry, visit HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\CI\Policy, make a DWORD value called "UpgradedSystem" (no quotes) and set it to 0. Then, reboot. This allows drivers without a Microsoft EV signature to be loaded. (The final release next month will offer to set this value automatically at first launch.)

Have you seen this way of managing update filth? Looks like it gives a lot of control over what occurs, and I am old enough that I still like using a command line interface. I tested it today on my crash dummy OS that allows update filth and it is preferred over the Winduws Update GUI. It will give you a list of available updates and let you choose which ones you wish to install.

Yep, that's another way do it. And many is stuck with a never booting OS to desktop if they download and installed directly from M$ servers. But I hate download patches and install with network. Nothing more different than use Microsofts own Win update. I prefer download standalone updates and install with network disabled. And I have never experienced that the pc's not reach the desktop after an update.

Because automatic mode would create a mess for the users. Better have a choice. Test what fits your pc and detemine what you want. Unisex systems (all should be and have the same) will never work

I wonder if my guess is correct here but I disabled the Telemetry service and did notice that one of those updates posted (the July preview for LTSC 2021) did fail to install on all my PCs. Not a single one succeeded and the version for LTSC 2019 did fail too (some of them run that version). So I was a bit surprised when every single PC did "install", reboot and then rollback the system.

All of those PCs do have a similar configuration with telemetry services off together with diagnostics. Did anyone else have similar experiences with those services disabled and failed updates? My strong suspicion is that it is the diagnostics that it really "needs" to such an extent that it goes "mental" if that service can't phone home and report "success!" to Microsoft.:classic_biggrin:

no such experience on my old HP pavilion computer running Win10 LTSC 2021 as it now offers the August 2022 updates like KB5016616 and not the older July preview update like KB5015878, GeekBear80
some "telemetry" stuff turned off and automatic windows updates disabled and I only manually check for updates using either wumgr or windows update minitool (WUMT)

moving on,

here's one of those updates in August 2022 that's causing some problems for both Win10 & Win11 - KB5012170

Windows KB5012170 update causing BitLocker recovery screens, boot issues - Bleepingcomputer

will temporarily hide/block this KB5012170 update for a while from installing using wumgr or wumt

I think I will check Update Catalog then and see if it might install, the KB5016616 that is. I always run with Windows Update disabled and only allow it temporarily in order for those manually downloaded ones to install.

Edit: I am installing it now... Let's see how it goes.

Edit 2: It turned out that the issue was me disabling the "App Readiness" service. It turns out that it has to be enabled in order for an update to succeed in this case, even when using Microsoft Update Catalog. I did re-enable the service and it went smoothly afterward.

Microsoft has confirmed that Windows updates released on August 9, 2022, caused audio issues on systems with Windows 10. The company has also shared solutions for the affected customers.

The audio bug in KB5015878 affects only client Windows 10 versions 20H2, 21H1, and 21H2. It should not bother Windows 11 users, just like the recently confirmed BitLocker recovery bug does not affect Windows 10 customers.
