G2 or is there also a G1 option?

ha, for now only G2, im checking what the frequency limit is. booted at 3800 Mhz last night 🤠

i also plan to check where G1 caps out, should be interesting! so yes, u can manually switch gears in the bios 😁

on desktops it seems that 4000 is the point on G1 where things start to get sketchy, so naturally would be lower on a laptop. id expect minimum 3200 on G1, with a bit of luck maybe 3400-3600.

On desktop higher tier chips tend to have better IMCs for 11th and 12th gen so I was thinking a nice 12900k in there in G1 mode would stretch those modules to their limits in G1 mode if the system board is capable of handling it.

On desktops for G1 12th gen, it is usually the CPU's IMC that gives up the ghost especially with dual ranked sticks. Running 2x16GB is usually off by a bin to a bin and a half vs single rank sticks. Some garbage early 12900k's couldn't even get pass 3733 on dual rank sticks.

My 12900k is running 2x16GB dual rank sticks at 4133 on my Strix D4. It will boot 4200 but errors. I never did go back in and set G2 to see if it was the sticks.

Awesome work bro! Keep it coming. 🙂

If compatible, your system will draw as much as it needs. I am not sure what the board draw limitations (if any) that are in place and I don't think we've seen a full bore 12900k + 3070ti load placed on a 330w before.

preliminary results: G1 tops out at 3500 Mhz, G2 at 3800 Mhz (both run error free in TM5 1usmus but so far only with auto timings, havent tightened them yet).

Toms Hardware did a review on my sticks and they found they could clock them up to 4000 Mhz at 1.35V, so that leaves the cpu IMC and the mobo itself.

besides, so far ive only tested two sticks, ill check and see if there are any slight differences among the four sticks (two are in my machine, but they barely get up to 3333 Mhz without errors) to try and push to 3600 on G1 and 4000 on G2.

wouldnt that be something? 4000 Mhz DDR4 in a laptop 🤠

So seems to be working great.

Here is the results running Furmark's QHD bench.

cool man, thanks for the data! can u go ahead and try running firestrike extreme or ultra stress test for like 10 min? furmark has the tendency to artificially throttle down the gpu so we might not be getting the actual peaks.

also, up the HWInfo polling to as fast as it can go at 50ms so we can catch any quick peaks, as well 🙂

so far it looks like its working, but doesnt provide much more power headroom vs the stock psu, as seen in the max system power at just 234W...

~161w on the GPU? Hmmmm, nice.

~106w peak on CPU

Total system power = ~241w

So the system has a draw limit by design?

G1 topping out at 3500 reeks of the system board but that can be fleshed out with a better CPU with a known better IMC real quick. The variance on IMCs is pretty brutal. Two 12100f's I tested. One gave up the ghost at >3200 (which is what it is rated) and the other 3600.

At these lower tier speeds overall, I would definitely opt for G1 when all is said and done.

yep thats what im suspecting. planning to check with premamod and a higher tier psu at some point, we definitely have thermal headroom on the gpu for higher sustained / more stable clocks. cpu will be tricky, especially with the upcoming 13900K id wager haha.

yep, agreed. im currently testing all possible combinations of ram stick pairs since the G.Skill 3800 kit i have is 4x8GB. so far done with 3 out of 6 possible pairings, no luck yet in breaking the 3500/3800 barriers for G1/G2. what i HAVE noticed though, is that different pairs need different training times to reach 3500/G1, i.e. the very first pairing took about 3 minutes bootloop training, whereas the last one i did last night took 12-13 minutes to finally boot. AIDA64 testing also showed significant performance differences, so im guessing tertiary timings play a big role in this regard.

so based on this, even if none of the pairs differ in max Mhz achieved, ill still check their respective performance numbers to make sure i get the best pairing for subtimings.

and yes, i also suspect its a combo of cpu imc and mobo (hopefully more of the former!). ur input makes me hopeful that it is indeed the former.

hmmmm... that looks familiar somehow 😁

another quick update on the RAM: i now tested all four sticks individually and determined that 3 out of the 4 are able to do 3800 Mhz on Gear 2, with 2 out of the 4 capable of 3500 Mhz at Gear 1. now to check and see the bandwidth / latency on those two and tighten up all the subtimings as far as possible.

crappedy-crap, next hard brick and programmer flash incoming later today!

on the bright side, bandwidth and latency numbers are heading towards +60% above the SPD at 2400 Mhz 🙂 not done with tightening of subtimings yet though (will update with exact performance numbers once done). also, this disassembly will give me a chance to do a proper LM reapply, the current one is suboptimal at best....

yep, lets hope nextgen clevos will bring something other than the all-intel X270 BGA abomination 😵

I have no idea why Clevo went full retard on their flagship model. The X270 is worse than the X170 in every way. There is absolutely zero reason for anyone to buy it.

I'm really hoping for a 17 inch Z790 + Raptor Lake based sucessor to the X170.

Sadly i think DTRs are done, we will not see one anymore. The mass wants thin and light garbage. And in this day of economical problems and bad logistics no manufacturer will spend his resources for such a niche product.😪

agreed, in current times DTRs and monster desktops are absolute luxuries to be talking about or considering spending crazy amounts of money on... (says the guy getting ready to spend a buttload of greens on his new build 😅)

Pulled the trigger on two new bigger power bricks. These should work without nuking my system right? Same plug diameter.

I was curious where you purchased these bricks? Eurocom wants 250USD for these which is quite a bit.

Clevo X170SM - 10900K, 32GB DDR4-2933 CL17, 4TB WD SN850X, RTX 3080 mobile, 17.3 inch FHD 144hz, System76 open source firmware, Windows 10 Pro 22H2

Sorry for the late reply.

Can confirm they work great. There might be cheaper options now but this is pretty affordable.

Only reason I can think about is that Intel footed much of the bill.

The X270 is a joke to the serious gamer, a joke to X170 owners who want a modular and (theoretically) upgradable successor and it also does not appeal to the thin and light crowd so I strongly doubt that Clevo would be so stupid to spend much money on such a misfire.

Amen to that. Looking at Dell, HP and Lenovo having modular cards it leaves a very bitter taste that there wasn't already a proper Clevo DTR in this generation with everything including the 3080 Ti being available, at least for others. Clevo missed a huge opportunity.

LOL @ LilShit 😄

Very similar to my first thought when I discovered which platform Clevo had selected to allow use of the mighty 12900K while making a mockery of their X series that should have had that capability instead.

As mentioned before, Clevo actually had everything ready for a 3080 Ti MXM, but Nvidia wouldnt let them go through with it. The Green Goblin at its best, just ask EVGA 😅
