Sent ya a PM. Wouldn't mind replacing my GL66 with it in the sig for that form factor with a real desktop CPU.

So no more developments on the Prema front then @jaybee83? What is the current status now in terms of functionality?

@win32asmguy did you end up selling your NH55 or keeping it?

I still do plan on picking one of these up eventually. 🙂

nothing new to report yet. current status is full cpu and ram tuning-ability, especially on the RAM side thats a big deal, otherwise ure stuck on SPD speeds and timings! next step im hoping for is to make the NH55 compatible with Raptor-Lake 🙂 should also help in pushing RAM speeds further!

Looks like PC Specialists, Clevo-Computers and LaptopParts4Less have all EOL/discontinued their NH55 sales. Only one left is Eurocom.

Updated the main thread with that and some other stuff from the thread.

Yep this product had a short lifetime. I hope that means a real successor to the X170 is in the works and will be revealed at CES 2023 or something like that. I think the X270 will probably sell extremely poorly. I don't see many people wanting that thing. I also don't think Clevo will make many of them given the current lack of popularity for Intel's ARC lineup compared to Nvidia's GPUs.

I just bought a Gigabyte A5 K1, which is a derivative of Gigabyte G5 family, which itself is a Clevo NP55 family I think, but Clevo site never seemed to indicate any AMD builds so I don't know.

So I guess I'll be reporting in here, then! Also, it was a surprised to learn that the laptop I ordered is a rebranded Clevo. The only thing I'm not sure was should I have opted for the AMD 5600 version instead of the Intel 10400H version. (I bought the AMD version). Both come with RTX3060 non MXMs.

They killed my Clevo and took it away from me, but they definitely didn't bring the Clevo out of me!

BTW, I'm wondering, if anyone uses the AMD version of the NH55XXXXXXXXX, can anyone recommend a good RAM?

Many people said just go for a Kingston Fury Impact DDR4-3200 with 20-20-20-40 CL, but I'll like to hear more opinions.

I'm curious too about what is the best set of PnP DDR4 sticks of 3200 ram both primary and terts out there for laptops.

Closest we have for a YT round up and the effects of better memory on fps is from Jarrod with a x8 / x16 comparison:

well until now 3200 is still end of the line for SO-DIMMs, unless u wanna go overboard and get one of the 3600/3800/4000 SODIMM kits that were intended for SFF desktop systems (like i did with the G.Skill 3800 lulz).

in any case, cant go wrong with those Kingston kits. in the end, u can basically just get any 3200 kit with decent timings (CL22 or faster).

I had a good look at the Gigabyte A5 K1, which confused me a bit because it looked like amalgation of various NH55 parts. On one part, I get NH553-R12, then on another part, NH55ERQ, and on another NH55N-RA1. Its pretty insane.

What I've also read, is that AMD 5000 series (in my case AMD R5-5600H) can only take in a max of 3200MHz RAMs, so I guess i'll start searching for those, with really low latency times (I don't know how low / tight, and frankly this subject still makes my head hurt), but if I go with JarrodTech's video, then I guess the importance of order

1. Speed (in my case, capped at 3200MHz)
2. Find low timings / tight timings that is AMD compliant.
3. x8 > x16 bank
4. Is it a single rank or dual rank RAMs? Dual rank > Single Rank, unless I got it wrong?

So in theory, does a 32GB 3200MHz 20-20-20-20 (or lower) x8 dual rank stick exist? If there is, I guess i'll go get 2 sticks so I can max out my RAM at 64GB.

Dual rank sticks are best as they offer the least memory stalls, and therefore highest performance.

I know for desktops that there are some 3200 MHz sticks that can go as low as CL 14 for the CAS latency. I'd imagine the high speed DDR4 3800 MHz SODIMMS could probably do 3200 MHz at very low timings. Even if the kit has a higher speed than you can take advantage of, it's still beneficial as that means you should be able to run lower timings at lower speeds than other kits can.

That depends on where you live, and what is the room temp, and what app you are using to bench it (even if its just your average games).

From there its easier to point out what may cause it, and what steps to be taken to cool it down further.

This is interesting to know. Mine uses AMD 5600H, so I'm very sure its locked to 3200MHz. But if you're saying I can get faster RAMs to work on 3200MHz but with lower and tighter timings, now you have my full attention.

I wonder if energy savings is also part of it (though I can sort of ignore it).

Yeah RAM overclocking is kinda like CPUs in that regard. Higher binned chips can either run at higher speeds than the lower binned chips with the same power consumption, or can run at the same speeds at the lower binned chips with less power and lower voltages. Higher binned chips are more power efficient, but that's negligible when clockspeed limited. The efficiency really starts to show when you start pushing the chips, as in the case of a 10900K you can get one CPU that draws over 300 watts when overclocked to 5.3 GHz all core, and another that draws only 250 watts at the same speed. I know that's not a CPU that would be used in the laptop this thread is talking about or in yours, it's just a point of comparison. The variance in power draw at the high end of performance gets pretty insane.

A kit that is capable of high speeds isn't immediately rendered pointless when your motherboard has a limit on how far the speed can be pushed, that just means you'll have to dial in the timings to get a benefit. Do make sure you can actually do that in your laptop's BIOS first though, otherwise then it is pointless. If you can in fact do RAM tuning in your laptop's BIOS, the highest speed you'll be able to run the RAM is the highest speed the motherboard can run it at. From there, it's a game of lowering timings and raising the RAM voltage until you find your lowest stable timings.

I noticed that the service manual is available, and also possibly a new EC version 1.07.06 which I have not tested yet.

I noticed that the service manual is available, and also possibly a new EC version 1.07.06 which I have not tested yet.

I have not tried the new version yet. I may ask Eurocom for it in case they have a modified variant for their performance modes.

Speaking of Eurocom they have listed the Clevo X370 as their Raptor X17.

  • 1 month later...

@jaybee83 and news/progress on Prema for the NH55? I ended up doing as I predicted last year and picked up @win32asmguy's NH55 so wondering where it stands.

I plan on testing at least 3 12900k's (including my 160w full load 12900k desktop sipping monster) and sorting out which one is best and delidding it and moving onto some heatsink mods I have in mind.

Just wanted to share with you guys that I have managed to succesfully upgrade a soldered laptop. It's a second hand HP Elite X2 G4, with still 3 months of warranty left.

I got with a i7 - 8565U and upgraded it to a i7 - 8665U. The costs in itself doesn't make much sense, but I was curious if it was possible. I specifically wanted something cheap which I didn't mind much if it broke.

The costs:

- brand new CPU from China - about 210 USD including shipping and VAT (150 without shipping and VAT)

- CPU socket mask - about 4 USD including shipping and VAT

- expert repair shop fee for doing the job + 3 months warranty on their work - 190 USD including VAT

Total cost:  404 USD

Not sure what to do with the old CPU that I was left with.

I felt I needed to share this with you, since I know most of you are here are fond of socketed CPUs. But it seems there is a path to upgrade even for soldered CPUs.

Congratulations.

You are not the only one with such curious mind.

I did similiar upgrade with a Dell laptop going from i7-8th gen 6core to i9-9th gen 8 core.

I can swear to god it hardware wise worked, but the software didn't accept it or there was some chipset incompatability as the laptop was stuck in a bootloop.

But it's fairly obvious anything can be upgraded and swapped it's just the fact that 99% of the time it is not worth it.

Like in your case, why the hell did you pay 404USD to upgrade 8565U to 8665U???

Just looking at the part number it looks like the latter just has a slightly higher clock speed and thats it. Makes no sense to me 😂

But hey, I understand it from a tinkerer's point of view. Good for you!

My question is can I solder a 3080 Ti die on my 3080 MXM card and have it work by changing the VBIOS...🥴
