  1. There is two model of Core 2 generation as far as I can tell. The original M17 which is the crossfire version and is running a PM45 chipset while the M17x "R1" is the SLI version which is running a 730i chipset. https://www.notebookcheck.net/Review-Alienware-M17-Gaming-Notebook.14089.0.html https://www.notebookcheck.net/Review-Alienware-M17x-Gaming-Notebook.18781.0.html The M17 is only using dGPU for the display while the M17x R1 does come with a switchable graphics thanks to the onboard 9400M, that might get an important role in compability. My goal was to OC some C2D I have laying around and it looks like the M17X "R1" have the option in bios while the M17 doesn't... even though the M17 looks like it could be unlocked... I prefer the M17 chunky design/chassis over the M17x line-up and I'm not interested in the Nehalem architecture 😕
  2. Hi, I'm looking into buying a M17 R1 (not M17x) with a QX9300 and a HD3870 (or two, it's unclear). I was wondering what was the best GPU working, is there any trouble with recent card and their vbios ? my goal is something like a GTX980M or maybe a Pascal card... Can I fit this laptop an RGB display (which should use eDP to LVDS iirc) ? Is there an eDP connector or solder pad present on the board ? Thanks you all 😉
  3. Hi, I'm a bit curious about the 7670 thin version, will it be possible to configure it with the 12950HX without dGPU ? What about the cooling capacity of the heatsink or the long term TDP ? I'm actually using a 7550 with iGPU and the I7 10875H is able to run up to 100W (all core 4.3GHz undervolted) without overheating.
  4. eDP on the M6700 is native, no MUX, it's directly wired to the dGPU. It works both in Legacy and UEFI mode (the latter one can display a clearer version of the Dell logo at boot). The only issue is to mount the panel, it require some modification, there is a thread about it on forum.51nb.com (but you need to be register now I believe)
  5. AL on W10 works fine, as aaron said, thread/task might be incorrectly running on E-core, it can be "fixed" by setting manually priority in task manager if you really need P + E-core working together. Also, note on Intel Arc GPU, the A370M is pretty much equivalent to a GTX 1650, both in laptop. I would guess the A770M variant will be similar to a 2080S desktop or a bit more performant than a 3060 desktop too, not that bad.
  6. Well, the thing is, if you have a 7540 with a 9880H+ or a 7550 with a 10875H+ or a 7560 with a 11800H+, you are getting pretty much the same CPU performance. However with 12th gen the difference in performance is HUGE, I have a 12600K in my desktop, with E-core disabled it's faster than the 11900K while having two core less, now if you had the benefit of the E-core, you are well above an overclocked 10900K (which is a "real" 10 core) in term of raw CPU performance. The IPC gain betwen "Skylake++++++++++++++++++++" and 12th gen is about 30 to 40% on the P-core alone... The current chassis started with the 7x50 series, so already two generation in total... I hope the chassis will not change, that way we could still upgrade GPU of older laptop to newer GPU 😉
  7. Thanks for both response 🙂 16" 16/10 Display share the same lenght as 15.6" 16/9, it's only the width that vary, it's gonna be very tight but I belive it's gonna works :), it will need to make some bezel adjustement/cuting
  8. Hi, I'm looking to upgrade the display on my Precision 7550, the current eDP cable I got is only a 30 pin one but I need the 40 pins version of this cable, I can't find the UHD version of the eDP cable for the 7550, only 7750 and 7560 are available. Does someone have the 4k 7550 version and could share me the part number of the cable (behind the display) ? As for the display I still hesite between the Macbook "AUO B160QAN01.0" 3072*1920 60Hz display and the "BOE NE160QDM-NY1" 2560*1600 165Hz display, both can be found for pretty fair price (about 150) and they are both 16/10 Thanks for your help 😉
