I think it is more for having the best of both worlds - water cooling when at your desk and a regular laptop on the go. OK, scratch that - not a regular laptop but a monstrous 17+ lbs package with about twice as much weight as most of todays "behemoths" 😁

Obviously the X370 chassis. I think this has already been shown at CES as the upcoming XMG Ultra 17? At ca. 7.5lbs it seems second in weight only to the Alienware M18 and it will probably have cooling that is about on par with the other BGA books and maybe a little better.

The Clevo laptops draw a lot of power anyway, up to about 10 times of what the CPU alone needs in a test I did with the X170KM-G to check battery life. So not very concerned with a few watt more, I would prefer that instead of having an unstable system. I also doubt that the electric bill would go up by more than a few bucks per year because of that especially when it allows for a more aggressive undervolt that in turn will decrease consumption in situations with high power draw.

Cursed by design while pricing still seems to be based on the assumption that the 4070 sits right between the 4060 and the 4080 when in fact it is closer to a performance increase that one would expect with a TI card.

AMD lists it as W10 compatible but with support varying by manufacturer: Only 64GB (and probably soon 96GB) memory though which is a complete and utter joke for this kind of CPU: Just made me lose all interest and it probably also means that it will not be seen in top of the line workstations. Is this with the new heat sink? The 775 already is a laptop that is quite heavy already so it would be interesting to know how much weight gets added by the new heat sink.

Looking forward to see what it can do in some workstations but I doubt we will see much of it in the higher end versions that usually have some kind of Intel / Thunderbolt combo.

And now back to the most disappointing card in this generation: In early leaks it looked like it would be the best bang for the bucks as it supposedly was pretty close to the 4080 mobile but somebody at Nvidia possibly did not like it and changed its fate from best to worst - a roughly 50% increase in Time Spy score going from a 70 to an 80 card must be a first: At least people with a laptop with the 2080 or better do not have to worry about upgrading - not worth it for this kind of performance.

Looking at the current generation it looks like the goal is to have a TDP that is low enough to allow the GPU to be adequately cooled in a 6 to 6.5 lbs laptop and with 175W this does not seem to be much of an issue so now all manufacturers can deal with more important things like who has the most garish design and the most RGB bling. The Alienware m18 will be an interesting test case as it is substantially bigger and heavier than the competition so if it sells well we may again see GPU and total system TDP lifted and with it an increase in weight and size across the board.

Good choice on behalf of your friend. I would also believe that warranty options and sound will be better on the m18. Also it has better connectivity and there are two additional m2 slots although due to their size they are of limited use.

Without taxes the 4080 in its cheapest config comes out to $2251,65 with your 15% coupon and with the mechanical keyboard and an upgrade to W11 Pro we are looking at $2375,74. Not too bad for a much more solid chassis than the Asus G18.

I feel a bit dumb - looked like a normal picture to me 😄 That screen may indeed be bigger but not sure I like the way this was done - it is not really an elegant solution to say the least. So kudos for the other stuff but not a fan of the screen that I would like to see in the original case.

You are a very impatient person, I would have bet that you were going for the 13980HX just because 🙂 Not that it would make much of a difference outside of benchmarks. And you are right about the pricing, with the 15%off the 4080 / 13900HX version is a pretty good value by the way, should come out to something between 2.2 and 2.4K I believe.

I was expecting more of an information about a screen or should I say panel mod but I only see two GPUs?

Thanks for doing that and with 85°C at max stress testing it does not look like 5GHz all core is all that much with your water cooling setup - those are excellent temps!

Excellent temperatures, looks like you could run that CPU at 4.9 or 5.0 GHz all cores 🙂 How easy is it to connect and disconnect and does the fluid have to be drained out of the heat sink for mobile use?

93 degree does not look too bad - how many watts can it sustain in the end? I just checked a P775 that I have here at the moment and it can do about 110W and 96°C with a 10 minute run, no cooling pad or bottom cover modifications. That is with the separate heat sinks for GPU and CPU.

I think that the heat sink still isn't big enough to dissipate even more heat, it just isn't that much metal there to make a big difference when both CPU and GPU are running. It would be interesting to know how high you can go with only the CPU running something like CB R23 multi core as it is very well possible that this design lends itself well to CPU heavy loads with little GPU involvement. For more improvements in heavy gaming I would probably go for the water cooled version as that should run a lot cooler and most important more quiet but at least right now that isn't very tempting considering price and complexity of such a solution.

The whole argument is not about profitability any more for a certain product or even excellence at a possible cost of losing a bit money on a flagship product - yes, companies did that - but it is about pandering to a certain lower denominator above which nobody shall rise any more. The 250W ceiling that EVERYBODY adheres to looks very much as if it is something that came about due to some backroom deals between manufacturers who do not want to compete any more for performance but for the most RGB glitz and who has the thinnest and the sleekest with the smallest screen bezels.

@bodosko - that GT75 is a magnificent machine, will be hard to top that design and connectivity and say goodbye to 4 memory and storage slots each unless you get the last gen GT77. Sad current trends of slimming and dumbing down laptops aside the last generation MSI units can be about as non-flashy as it gets when you take the Vector or GE76/77 and even the GT77. If a 3070Ti with 1080p is enough you could get the GP76 if you want to move up to QHD take the GE76 if you want a better CPU, too and QHD that would then be a case for the GE77 more memory and storage options and more quiet cooling? take the GT77 To my knowledge you can switch off all RGB on all of these and I have tested this myself on the GT77 that can be configured to have no RGB lighting at all. The MSI units have a number of benefits and you know them so not sure if you want to look into other designs. If you do look at others maybe go for Tongfang / Uniwill that are sold by Eluktroniks and others like Cyberpower. You even have a water cooling option for them and they can be configured to look very plain. Eluktroniks has @Prema modded options which may be interesting but I am not quite sure if that would still be in the 2500$ upper limit of your budget. Please not that their screens are 17" and therefore more narrow but in return you get some added height and an overall slightly bigger screen. Legion has some understated looking models when it comes to the case and so do HP it seems but both to my knowledge miss the easy bios overclocking abilities of the MSI and they do not really have something like the easily adjustable fans that you find on MSI units including cooler boost so if you are coming from MSI that may be a consideration. If you are looking for something understated that does not break the bank for this generation you may want to look at the 18" Acer with an 18" screen. The Asus units are interesting only when you do not mind that they scream I AM A GAMER which is rather unfortunate. If you can live with that the G18 with a 4070 or 4080 could be interesting.

Looks to me as if you have a bad implementation of LM. Do the fans ramp up when you run CB23 and what is your single run and 10Min. result? What is your graphics score on 3Dmark? Around 13.5K or better would be a decent result and nothing to be ashamed of.
