No, for me the choice was between 4080 and 3090 Ti. About the same price. If the 4080 came with 20GB of VRAM, I would probably go with that. I find the fact that Nvidia are selling 16GB cards for more than the previous gen 24GB flagship is a blatant attempt at extortion. Again, no NVLink is a further negative. The 4090 is basically an overkill for some professional applications. Realize that Nvidia sells professional cards with the same chip as in 4090 but 80GB of VRAM. One way to think about it is in terms FLOPS/VRAM ratio, that's basically too high in the 4090 in the sense that the power may go unused given that the card has only 24GB of VRAM, and the comical card size means it is more difficult to use it in multi-GPU setups. Not a hard requirement fortunately, but def a good to have. Not really stuck with anything, thank you for your concern, just pointing out that 3090Ti is arguably the better product for many professional purposes than the 4080. The 4090 is likely an overkill, and there is no availability of the FE version here. I recently saw what looks like a 2.7 slot PNY 4090 card which could be an option, but that is not in stock either. No, again, just for clarity, let me recap the advantages of the 3090 Ti FE over the 4080 FE: * 50% more VRAM * NVLink * Slimmer, easily fits a 3 slot multi GPU air-cooled build On the plus side also, these currently sold 3090TI FEs could be using a new chip variant (it says something about a variant in the chip description, I would have to boot to Windows to provide more details, that' s not happening anytime soon), I got 23-24K in TimeSpy graphics stock, whereas notebook check claims the median for 3090 Ti is 21K. Sure, that's what it looks like from the gamer's perspective. I am talking about professional applications, where the situation is more nuanced. Again, cooling and power consumption are of no concern - the card runs at around 180W / 65C with restricted airflow (another card 3 slots apart) under full load in my use case. I am also trying hard no to come across as a bit of an NVidia fanboy, so I am calling them out on their anti-consumer practices below: * Dropping SLI - clearly the possibility of running multi-GPU setups on any cards of the same type would be an awesome way for consumers to extend the lifetime of their investments, or further increase the performance of their systems. That value proposition has been taken away. * As a corollary, NVLink is gone, cynically disabled despite the circuitry being there, further limiting the utility of the cards for some customers * Pricing a 16GB next gen card above previous gen 24GB flagship - lol Kind of reminds me of all the classic Alienware dick moves. Yeah, I was surprised to find that my W7 Ultimate MSDN licence was still good for W10/W11. Felt like more of a glitch than something that would be expected of MS today. -

Well, all products are targeted, and to some extent therein lies the problem, as the Goblin cuts features to force people to use specific product lines. 24GB also targets some gamers, including perhaps people running VR (not sure), or folks who are planning to keep the card for a while. 8GB sounded like an absolute overkill just a few years ago. SLI is not the only application of NVLink. My guess is that they took away support for typically nefarious Green Goblin reasons, such as to force professional users to fork up 2-3x for the same hardware if they require NVLink. The abandoning of SLI for gaming makes no sense from the technical standpoint either, particularly in the era of raytracing and given that VR is at thing. Suppose that performance scaling in a dual-GPU setup was close to linear, as you would expect in the case of RT and VR, then you could just grab another 3090Ti (or match up another type of previous gen cards) and end up with two GPU setup that easily tops 4090 in these applications. Not good for sales, particularly if your new cards are monstrosities that are hard to run in multi-GPU setups without custom water cooling. Jensen doesn't like. Of course it is, which is where AIBs come in and they do provide monster coolers to boot. I was obviously talking about the FE cards. Depends on the application. Actually, my 3090 Ti FE runs surprisingly cool in a multi-GPU setup (65-67C at full load), and wipes the floor with a professional Ampere card 2x the price. The case for a 4090 is there, but it's not nearly as clear cut as in the case of gaming. Once again, it all depends on the application, and if the 16GB of VRAM is a hard limitation, the shiny new 4080 crashes and is worth zero. In less severe scenarios, the card ends up being underutilized due to the insufficient RAM. Gaming is simpler - the 4080 is about 20-30% faster (maybe more in RT) + DLSS3 so a better buy I guess, the pricing is still nuts. -
For a moment there it was impossible to browse without logging in, looking better now, although the nagging is real (I'm pretty sure there was none before). I don't use it for any purpose although I know others that do, e.g. to share some business-related piece of info. Seems like it has become mostly a political tool a while back.

Same. Admittedly, I even satisfied my curiosity by listening to his supervised and thus obviously idealizing biography :)

More info on the "$250M bond". A Coindesk opinion piece claims zero actual dollars were posted. Unbelievable, seems that the fraud here has systemic reach. He is looking really smug, I guess we now know why he quickly agreed to be extradited to the US.... Bankman-Fried's Incredible Shrinking ‘$250 Million Bond’

From a gamer's perspective. Otherwise, it has less VRAM than 3090Ti, no NVLink, and is unnecessarily large given that both the GPU and VRAM are cut down significantly compared to the already pretty cool running 4090 - yet they just lazily kept the same cooler and card dimensions. The 3090Ti FE is slimmer (2.7 slot roughly) which makes a difference in multi-GPU builds. -
Nobody is questioning his intellect or drive here, it's more about the ethics (all the more important given his wealth and thus power). The two are not necessarily positively correlated. As for the nice guy interview persona, clearly that's fake, just ask all the people he summarily dismissed at Twitter and elsewhere. BTW You should also learn to discern the not-so-subtle difference between a bit of a forum banter aimed at a celebrity and hating, or generally obtuse personal attacks against other members.

Yeah, definitely improving. I am not sure about IQ, that's not very meaningful in this context, but they are actually charging $10/month for the privilege of talking to a bot, so it must be worth it ;) https://www.quickchat.ai/emerson

Merry Christmas everyone! @Papusan thanks for the video, great start - just need one of those gigantic studio mics YTers use, and a some sort of mesmerizing snowy Norwegian background (basically just point the camera at your window) and you are good to go with the channel! All the best bro. BTW The fans were so powerful, I assumed the PC was going to take off from the table ;) -

the decline of the once mighty Nvidia laptop GPUs
Etern4l replied to 1610ftw's topic in General Discussion
The only thing Nvidia sees as a necessity is making more money. So they ask the manufacturers: what chips can we provide to make more money? The answer is: Please provide as efficient chips as possible, and obviously keep the power low. No more than 170W-ish, otherwise laptops tend to go on fire (see Alienware Area 51M), and we do have the slim-and-light agenda to pursue here. Thanks! -
Sam Bankman-Fried Released on $250M Bail Secured by Parents Apparently, mommy and daddy somehow posted a "$250M" bond secured against a Palo Alto home (surely not worth anywhere near that amount). Is that a joke? How can a couple of potentially implicated university professors who benefited from the fraud secure a $250M bond?

Ouch. Well, at least we now know they weren't mob, as in that case they probably wouldn't be talking.

Perhaps you can skip some of the adjectives? Same content, but will make for an easier/quicker read. A humble request :) Due to time pressure I was unable to watch the whole thing, but some of it looked a bit fake. What are the sources of the information? Does this YTer have his own reporters on the ground? Given we are in a sea of fake news and video clips, there is no credibility as far as I could see. My take on this is that the mainstream media (in the US in particular, since you have almost no oversight over media w.r.t. veracity and impartiality) may skew information through editing and suppression, but what they do report should be reasonably factual (at least that's true in the UK, where otherwise there would be a wave of public complaints to the regulator, investigations, fines etc.). In contrast, the alternative outlets seem to be taking more liberties. A rather extreme example would be AJ and his claims of a major school shooting being a hoax. As for the far right, at least across the pond, there have been several instances of them provably taking money from or having close links with Russia (in the UK, France and Italy) - often the links are actually completely overt, many of those figures are outspoken supporters. This kind of funding/support makes total sense as as an anti-Western strategy, it's consistent with the playbook, and VP has been getting an excellent return on his investment aimed at fracturing and hopefully at some point blowing up the West he has hated his whole life. There is no better way to get countries/regions to self-destruct than by inciting division, extremism, and political polarisation - the history (recent included) is very clear on that, and obviously, by its very nature, democracy is very vulnerable to this. People who support that agenda are (rarely) active conspirators/assets, and most commonly just UIs.

Same thing. A common theme in right-wing circles in Europe too. How can they justify a bias towards the gangster state?

Didn't watch the whole video, but seems like those guys are anti-Ukraine?

Exactly, and that's fair enough, since desktop have a cooler half the size of a whole laptop. You can potentially imagine a deep SciFi world where a laptop is just as fast as a desktop, or where everything is in the cloud, but in 2022 we are nowhere near that point, and we have never really been there given the existence of HEDT etc. A laptop involves a degree of compromise on performance on the high end, it's not a "desktop replacement" in that sense. Obviously, it can be a functional desktop replacement for many users, if it does all they need a computer to do for them.

Not recommended unless dead, same with seals - super-cute faces, but deadly bites (or at least often resulting in amputations). Grim. Somehow, reminded me of the Revenant scene:

I have to say, the legal route to the US is so painful that it heavily discourages people from wealthier countries to liquidate their assets home and move to America, with the exception of high net-worth individuals (millions in liquidity + desire to invest those assets in the US and potentially run a business, fair enough) - should they be interested in this vs relocation to a tax haven (probably the more popular option). On the other hand, I imagine sometimes effectively penniless migrants from less wealthy countries are more likely to be desperate enough to put themselves through the ordeal of the H1B process, where people and their families can get kicked out of the country at a moment's notice should the primary sponsor lose their job. The US immigration system overall, in conjunction with the situation you highlighted, doesn't make too much sense to me TBH. I would suggest there should be no route to citizenship for new illegal migrants who are basically just jumping the queue, and making a mockery of those who try to follow the rules. Arguably, it would also benefit the US to replace the illegal inflow with an expanded independent legal economic immigration route, done in a smart way. For instance, there is no scoring, quality of education doesn't matter, assets don't matter I guess in the interest of "fairness", which is a joke, because the rules don't apply to super-wealthy anyway, and the system just creates a bias towards lower initial economic status. Yes, there are also the intra-company transfers, but that's not necessarily a route to permanent residence (at the discretion of sponsoring employers - many of those are probably not too charitable, again likely depending on the country of origin of the worker). Lastly, it would be humane if work visas were fixed term to give people a bit of certainty in running their life. I suspect that should the US ever implement these proposals, the economy would get a decent bump, communities would receive more investment from the new arrivals, and more of the unpopular offshore operations would struggle to find a reason to exist, as people would just prefer to come and work in the US (a vast, mostly unpopulated country after all) - or at least there would be a material risk of them doing so, which would put those operations under pressure. .02

I guess the consolation is that there isn't much to leach off of in the US? The system seems pretty lean. The unemployment is still very low too, for now. I guess there is the volume though. Similar issue here: mostly illegal economic immigrants ("asylum seekers" from countries like Albania, where life is obviously tougher, but there is no sensible grounds for an asylum claim on arrival from there) coming to the UK enjoy coast guard escort as they cross the English Channel in dinghies from France (where they could have claimed their asylum in the first place), taxpayer-funded hotel stays, some level of access to the very expensive National Health Service, not to mention the associated legal and (very occasionally) deportation costs as well the impact on crime, housing, schools, and potentially the welfare system (I'm not sure if they are entitled to any state aid, probably difficult).
-
Difficult to ascertain the accuracy from the outside, but if true that's great news for prospective immigrants! Why engage in all that painful work visa or some other legal immigration process? Should this Ukraine/energy crisis completely destroy economies on the other side of the pond, I guess it will be time to grab the family and just push north through El Paso like those folks. (j/k)

Impressive what can be done in a small form factor, but yet again clearly shows the significant gap between the current laptop and desktop CPU performance: desktop 13th gen CPUs are 20%+ faster, even in the Geekbench baby benchmark lasting like a minute in total (and probably more than that once the inevitable thermal throttling kicks in). Also this is testing stock, whereas desktop CPUs can also be realistically overclocked.

For me it was maybe 2 weeks to get the service kit delivered. Then I waited for a good while before using it. Didn't see anything horrible inside, just a bit of a reddish discolouration on the copper cold plate, but the gasket was indeed rubber as shown on the GN video. -

I had one of those, was easy to fix though obviously extra hassle. Newer items should have a QC sticker on as evidence of the issue being resolved. AFAIR only units sold until June had the problem. Otherwise a solid AIO, has been through a lot already, although one fan started making noises after a couple of months of heavy duty so had to replace.
