OK 2day I took the p4000 out of m17x r4 Black and tried it in m17x r4 Red = 8 beeps. Then tried GTX 970m in the Red = 8 beeps. I put the GTX 680m back in Red = all good. The Red has 120hz 3D screen and can only run PEG. No SG, No IGFX. It is EUFI. The Black has 1600x900 LVDS screen, EUFI and runs the P4000 Flawlessly in SG mode. So I tried the GTX 980m in the Black and will only work in SG mode, if I try PEG gets 8 beeps. I would like to upgrade the Red GPU. I tried switching the video cable under the keyboard but got 8 beeps. I have A11 unlocked bios in both. If you do a cmos reset it should see the card, unless the card is bad as was stated before. I purchased my GTX 980m on aliexpress cheap $200 and it is lacking, crashing, overclocking 60mhz base clock crashes Firestrike so am not happy with this GTX 980m.

Did you OC the cpu in bios? I have mine set at 43,42,41,40 and if I go higher it throttles and gives lower 3Dmark scores. I also have the all copper triple pipe vacume plate, and no cooler, just raised off the desk 3/4 inch. That cooler should be doing you better than what your getting.

I don't use my batteries. That being said my Alienware 18x r2 purchased 10-12-2012, brand new has its original battery in it and its at about 93 percent. It has never been run down. Only when there is a power outage I run around shutting down the laptops, 6 active running and 1 retired and 2 dead. All active have original manufacturers batteries but not all at 100 percent. The 2 precisions when unplugged will last minuets and shut off. But none are expanding, exploding or leaking. OEM is what I would recommend. I have a Asus G51J that died 1 1/2 years ago that I put a Ninja Bat in 6 mos before it died so I have no idea how good it might have been. I went through the same dilema about what to buy. This past week I purchased from Newegg what looks to be a Alienware m17x r4 original battery and it is the only battery at 100 percent now. But I have doubts due to texture finish not matching the base of the PC it might be a clone. So just on the 18x being so old and still working I would want OEM first choice. I don't think I could find an OEM for the 18x anyway.

Yea, I know the Big Guys left and I didn't know they edited posts and DMs, I just go there when Google gives a link to read, and as far as the Big Guys I have to say " Where would Alienware be if it wasn't for @Mr. Fox, @johnksss and @sv17? They paved the highway for the likes of dell and nvidia and least of all us! I would have given up on these machines long ago but I can keep working on them and upgrading to this day!

OK if anyone is intrested, I got the m17x r4, i7- 3740qm, gtx 680m, 500 gb crusiall BX500 ssd, ST2000LM003 HN-M201RAD HDD, LITEONIT LMT-64M3M and 120Hz WideFHD (1920 x 1080) WLED LCD w/3D Bundle Installed A11 unlocked Bios and set up overclocking the CPU all 3 settings gave me max 4.1 ghz According to cpu world 3740qm = Maximum turbo frequency is 3.7 GHz / 3700 MHz so hitting 4.1 looks like max unless someone knows better HAHA

I still have an account there and about a year or so maybe 2 or 3 dont remember I gave $6 for a bios or something else to download and the next month they took another $6 out again automatically, so I had to put in a request to stop and they stopped. But I thought that was rude of them. I dont like the atmosphere there at all, they act like a bunch of "Wise Guys" and are probably just hiding behind the PC screen! like a bunch of "know it all's".

Well I've got a i7 3740qm comming in from Australia, its in a m17xr4 with a 120Hz WideFHD (1920 x 1080) screen, 32g ram, 2tb hdd, 500gb hdd, 60gb hdd and seller description "Nvidia Geforce GTX 680M. With TP esports gaming keyboard and mouse. Updated windows 10. Works good. Cant insert disc". I suspect "cant insert disc" means a dvd/hdd caddy. I mainly liked that it was Red, but the 120hz screen clinched it for me! So after i get it I'll spend time OCing the 3740qm after unlocking the bios, trying my gtx 1080 mxm that don't work, installing 500gb 850 evo, and my all copper triple pipe vapor chamber CPU heatsink. I really think I like tinkering these laptops than using them!LOL

I thought Win 7 had better performance than Windows 8/8.1/10/11. I'm going to try a dual boot on the m17xr4 win7 vs win10. I thought I read on this forum someone said win 7 gave better performance

What about the ram? Can Samsung PC3-12800 M471B1G73DB0-YK0 be overclocked to higher than 1600mhz? I tried but it keeps resetting to default Also the flex vid overide I kicked up to 30
