  1. We've reached a point of no return and BGA only solutions have run away with just about everything. Boycotting will just be the final nail in the coffin as they will simply even stop making hybrids even and everything will just be BGA. The general (m)asses have fully embraced BGA as the only solution but I guess inversely the market speaks and it is what they preferred when given a choice as at one point beefy notebooks held equal if not more market share but the bean counters could see which direction the market was flowing. Outside of removable graphics, this is just like the previous models. I see plenty of copper and I like the 2x SO-DIMM design. It's a painful pill to swallow but nothing is soldered on except the GPU. It is nails on a chalkboard to me but there are literally zero, realistic means to reverse the flow: Numerous real laptops, small selection of T&L T&L draws parity with real laptops T&L dominates, real laptop options start to dry up All the real beefy laptop makers abandon their true DTRs except for Clevo who still offers multiple models Clevo only issues one true DTR Clevo issues an almost DTR except for BGA graphics I do hope the X15 is a portend of a refresh for a 17" model with modular everything but I'm not holding my breath. If the X15 can be tamed with binned silicon and all the normal tricks of the trade even at stock settings a 12900k in there will blow away every other notebook out there by a long shot. Depending on what the TDP of the cooling solution (which by appearances is clearly skewed to cool the CPU), you toss in a 12900k that naturally runs cool at stock and can be massively UV it has potential.
  2. Now you know almost every laptop (and plenty of desktops) that roll off the line get subpar scores till they are released into the wild and we get our hands on them and tune them up good and proper. 😁 With that being said, that is a full fat 12700k in there obviously throttling. It is scoring lower than my 10900k in my X170SM-G. It's going to need some work, stat. Remember X170SM's and even X170KMs even now still throttle like crazy without proper TLC. Users in the old X170KM-G forums kept saying it couldn't be tamed with an 11900k till I tamed one with an 11900k (a faulty X170KM-G at that) and had it running properly. Even now, an owner of an X170SM-G in the X170SM-G forums just sent his back to get it looked at from Eluktronics because his 10900k was throttling and his 3Dmark CPU score was under 10k when it should be around 14k. What I'm saying is those issues can most likely be addressed and fixed. That's what we've always done in the Notebook forums. As for the GPU.... 🙄 I'm not sure what they or we can do in regards to the GPU if all that is being offered now is non MXM solutions but only BGA options then what? At least with flexible memory and CPU we remove two points of known failure but I agree I am not a fan at all of the soldered on GPU in any way, shape or form. I'd still take this hybrid DTR over the completely soldered BGA laptops that are out there instead though.
  3. I remember it being both. He would give his BIOS to individuals under the agreement they don't sell, modify or share it and one POS did exactly that. Tack on the Eurocom debacle and....yeah.
  4. I second EVGA for their warranty. I do like Seasonic's flatter and more flexible cabling though. Corsair cables are so stiff and sharp and after the previously mentioned H1200 debacle (cold temps caused brown starts) which took my Z390 FTW with it during a faulty start up, I'm done with them for PSUs. I RMA'd the recalled H1200. They sent me a brand new one and I sold it as is. What have you budgeted for a good PSU? That will really set the narrative for your purchasing adventures.
  5. Last day to pick up the 12900ks from Best Buy so I did. It was launch day, first sellout batch from BB I ordered and was sitting there since last Fridday (takes deep breath of KS container).... Mmmmm I can smell the SP84 sitting inside 😁 I'll pop it in later tonight or tomorrow but my track record with bad bins from Best Buy is pretty epic. Only decent chip I got from them over all these years was that golden 5800x. Every other chip has been pretty mediocre. Including the worst 11900k and 12900k CPUs out of all the chips I tested.
  6. Depending on the curve and pull you experience with the 10850k along with how far you want to take it, budget at least 350w and 500w for the 3090 and 400w for the 6900xt. If you're going to work with 520w or unlocked vBIOS for the 3090 adjust accordingly. So you are looking at 800w min just for those two items. I'd would say a 1000w is the min and a 1200w would be better. 1500w is overkill in the best way. I tripped my EVGA 850w overclocking my 11900k and KPE 3090 for example and switched to a 1000 Seasonic Focus and moved the 850w to the test rig. My next PSU is going to be min 1500w now that prices are starting to get better.
  7. 15" is a bummer. H690 is a let down As for the GPU, I don't know if we'll see any MXM cards again only fusion builds of socket-able CPUs and BGA GPUs. The upside is you can bin your CPU and if/when the 3070ti isn't enough go eGPU. Even with H690, once a system is in the wild great things do tend to happen. 🙂 And I agree; I would hope this is a portend of things to come and we get a proper 17" DTR.
  8. I'm hoping they aren't the only ones who will offer this model. Maybe look and see what XMG and a few others have to say. But if Eurocomm is the only one offering it....well it is what it is. 😭 I agree Eurocomm's track record wasn't great and it was an individual user who was trusted who took Prema's BIOS and abused it for his own gains along with the Eurocomm debacle.
  9. Eurocomm has announced a full Socket 1700 DTR: https://videocardz.com/press-release/eurocom-announces-raptor-x15-laptop-with-up-to-intel-core-i9-12900k-16-core-desktop-cpu Upsides: Full 12th gen support up to 12900k. My cool hand luke pulling ~150w full tilt at stock running CB23 20min loop would probably be right at home in this. Only 2x SO-DIMM slots. Less traces, less fuss, 12th gen runs best on two slots anyhow DDR4 support up to 3200....hopefully trhe BIOS is unlocked a bit Downsides: 15.6" form factor Looks to be BGA 3070ti Official thread started here:
  10. Clevo has announced a full fledged 12th gen 15.6" Desktop class CPU Socket 1700 laptop. This is the last of "Desktop class" laptops in that it can replace and upgrade every component except for the GPU. If you're interested in buying one new, Eurocom is the last vendor to offer it at this time as of January 2024 There is a potential bulk seller of the chassis from China directly here Clevo model #: 3060: NH55JNPY / NH57JNPS 3070: NH55JNRQ / NH57JNR 3070ti: NH55JNNQ / NH57JNN Clevo NH5xJNxx Specs: Platform:Intel H670 Chipset; Intel LGA1700 desktop processor up to i9 12900KS (16cores/24threads) GPU Technology:NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3060 (6GB GDDR6) / 3070 Ti (8GB GDDR6) Display Technology: 165Hz; QHD; 2560×1440; Matte; 100% sRGB; BOE NE156QHM-NY1 240Hz; FHD; 1920×1080; Matte; 100% sRGB; SHARP IGZO LQ156M1JW03 Robust Design:Back cover made from Aluminum Alloy; front /top case/bottom case made of resins Cooling:High performance, high quality copper GPU and CPU heatsinks to keep your system running cool. Can I adjust memory timings in BIOS? Does 13th gen work? Will 14th gen work?: Unfortunately there is no 13th gen or 14th gen support. There is also no BIOS level UV controls or memory tuning.Only chance of getting any of this is some Prema or Dsanke level BIOS adaptations and any and all work is kept private unlike the old days so don't hold your breath as the days of free and unfettered BIOS love for the sake of sharing and freeing systems out of passion has come to an end. Hopefully someone will come along and at least add 13th/14th gen and UV BIOS controls at a minimum. Bonus points would be BIOS memory gear adjustments and tuning. Is there a better aftermarket CPU/GPU heatsink? 11. lol Linus short delidding and relidding a 12900ks: (-10c temp drop)
  12. What type of config CPU wise are you looking to use? You might want to look at SFF models that support water cooling too depending on CPU.
  13. It's good to know your GPU is running within operational parameters. CPU could be bad pairing, bad thermal application, bad silicon....all thee above. Hopefully Eluctronics will get you sorted out good and proper.
  14. Agreed, in one fashion or the other I have Qualcomm, Apple, AMD and Intel Silicon in my various devices...
  15. The 5800x was always the hottest running chip in their line up from day one unless you got a good sample. Some would confuse low Package Power with producing less heat when quite honestly at stock the 5800x is capable of putting out as much heat as some 12900k chips at stock. It's just that the 12900k is pulling 200-240w doing it while the 5800x is doing it 130-150w. And just like Intel, it is sensitive to heat when OCing and would take fairly high Vcore to push 4.7+ all core stress tests. I do remember using 1.4v for some tests. Overclocked, it could easily push into the 80s and low 90s even pulling ~150w max. Google temp issues with it and you'll see plenty trying to tame the heat and wondering why it is running so hot. On the plus side, 5800X3D is their better B2 stepping silicon and most likely binned so they do seem to be running cooler and pulling slightly less than B0 5800x variants. Even with 12th gen, let's face it. On the mobile front Intel is still the hot and heavy winner in mobile computing. Only difference is they actually win this time around in performance to go along with that hot and heavy. Cramming that in T&L chassis and end users get what they get when they select certain configs in those rail thin bodies. Looks like Alienware and MSI did it right this time around though with their gaming notebooks as 12th gen 12700/12800 and 12900 parts are putting up some very nice numbers single and multi-threaded.
  16. I'm thinking 5.3 all core, 5.6-5.7 single core boost. Like you said, unless their node process has gone through some major improvements I'm not seeing it especially having to add in more headroom for 8 additional e-cores. I would love to see a 10-12 P-Core only 13th gen chip. As for reviews, I've been watching them too and HWUs major fouls are limited selection of games tested along with failing to test the 12900k/ks with DDR4-3800 and limiting it to DDR-3200 when they gladly tossed in the 5800X3D with DDR4-3800 and DDR4-3200. He did say he is busy benchmarking a whole slew of games so I expect a much larger range and average in a future video as that is what they're known for. Hopefully he'll also throw in DDR4-3800 for parity along with the DDR5-6400 results. The general consensus seems to be overall subpar vs 5800x as just about every non game benchmark has it lagging behind, well, just about everything except the 5600x; locked down (except in a specific, Asus targeted outlier situation as shown by Skatter using the Shamino approach) and some games absolutely shine, some are the same or a few fps behind. It's a glorified gaming CPU upgrade that is hit or miss depending on games tested/played. The trade off is lower clocks and a higher price than a normal 5800x.
  17. Wow.... AMD: "We've taken a chip that was normally open to overclocking and originally a had much higher PBO on launch. They started dying so we then took that chip and neutered the PBO but feisty customers would just manually OC...now introducing its natural evolution locking it down in every way AND reducing stock clocks PnP BABY! Set and forget! Introducing the 5800X3D!" *Crickets*
  18. When I first ran my unit, it was getting CPU scores right around there with some throttling. I ended up having to go under the hood and fine tune it but it is better at this point to send it back so they can address the throttling issue. Your GPU score is right in line. What were your GPU temps after that run?
  19. Awesome! So any other X170SM-G users can come in and between our two systems see how their unit should be running since we basically got the same scores at pure stock. GPU should be in the 60's c max CPU can hit 90s c TimeSpy Overall score should be in the 11000-11700 range CPU Score ~14k GPU Score ~11k If you get a chance, can you do a CB23 run too? Thanks!
  20. Whew, glad I sold my new in box 3060ti for $620!! But in all seriousness... Crypto boom is over Many who sucked it up and paid higher prices for their gaming cards did already Next gen is on the horizon Tariffs expired EVGA is selling them (and many of their cards) marked down including the 12GB model for $999.99 directly too: https://www.evga.com/articles/01559/evga-stack-and-save-event/ Just about every card they have is in stock, ready to ship from the 3090ti on down except for their AIO model 3090ti's which aren't yet out. Availability stops at 3070ti. No lower tier models on the page.
