But, it is still not clear how or why the ethernet port itself would be carrying enough current to cause what happened. Very strange.

I assume the current would increase with the length of the cable (Ohm's law), but not sure what absolute levels we are talking about here. Bear in mind, the individual wires are quite thin.

BTW way back you'd need a special crossover cable to connect computer to a computer, but it shouldn't matter these days, assuming the other PC is reasonably recent.

Given that the outer metal housing around the end of the connector is what looks to have been shorted, it almost looks like it was putting power to ground.

Something to play around with later even though I still have the A380 on the shelf too....

I plugged a long Ethernet cable in to my computer from my wife’s work computer. So I could provide internet access to her system. Well, right after I plugged this Ethernet cable in it began liquifying the rubber housing on the Ethernet cable, I couldn’t unplug it because it was now stuck inside of the Ethernet port. My Unity-X started getting really really really hot in the I/O area. Then in the moment of panic and imagining cooking 13900K’s my PC completely shutdown on me, then I realized my chiller LCD was shut off too. I lost power to half the house as well.

I flipped the breakers off and back on, and fortunately my PC survived this ordeal with no loss in function. Even that Ethernet port still works with some heavy burn marks on the side of the inner port. The Ethernet cable has metal around the plastic housing, so it looks like it touched metal to metal and grounded something I’m not sure.

Anyone know WTH may have happen here though?

Bizarre, glad you managed to avoid a disaster. Any PoE switches?

The length might have something to do with it, but it's way off the max supported length (300ft+). Nice riddle. Perhaps some conductive debris got into the socket and caused a short...

Edit: way back you'd need a special crossover cable to connect computer to a computer, but it shouldn't matter these days, assuming the other PC is reasonably recent.

My initial thoughts were PoE and a cross-over cable issue too but @Etern4l was on the money with those first two questions.

There is always the possibility of a surge/short somewhere that went through your system (or the wife's) and grounded out through the port.

My next step would be to use a real hub/switch to connect the systems again or place them closer with a shorter run. I see you used the native ports so there was no chance of a PCIe surge through a NIC.

Here is the cable, and the burn mark inside the Ethernet port. It was only running from computer to computer.

I don’t know how it’s possible, or how it even happen. I just know the cable was heating up like crazy. And so was my motherboard I/O area. It melted the cable, and burned my Ethernet port. It shut off my PC and tripped the breakers of my office and even my kitchen.

I had to pull the cable out with pliers, it was literally seized inside the 2.5gbit port.

More than likely....water damage some where on the board having to do with the ethernet port. And if you have not been using it for a while, you wouldn't know when it got messed up..... Speculations of course.

Now yeah, that would be possible. Hadn't thought of that. It wasn't that long ago that it might have gotten wet even if it was not evident at the time. That was a lot of condensation on the water block a few weeks ago.

That's why I only use imgur and postimg.org. I have images saved 5+ years ago that are still accessible. I don’t think it’s from moisture. One thing that’s strange is, that Ethernet cable that caused this is not one I normally use ever. It has a metal plug housing around it. And that metal was burning against some metal on the inside of the Ethernet port. Not the wires themselves. This metal tab on the right side of the Ethernet port was burning against the metal on the side of the Ethernet cable. Anyways, the motherboard held up under the heat and stress! Nothing broken. That port works just fine.

That metal sheath around the connector definitely caused a short, causing it to heat up and melt the plastic around it.

Did the same thing happen to the other end of the cable, or only the end plugged into your motherboard?

This reminds me of the melting 4090 power connector issue.

Thank you very much bro Fox 🙂 Sometimes I forget to follow up some websites. Intel's software policy is disgusting.

Edit. Btw... Is this version the last one before current XTU v7.9.1.3 ?

I don't know. Just got lucky that I had it as I normally do not use XTU. Yes, their driver and software policy sucks and is deplorable, just like the Redmond Retards and AMD and NVIDIA. They all suck.

The current look and feel of XTU is totally trash. Everything in the UI is bloated to be nice for use by touchscreen smartphone, tablet and modern UI filth for Kool-Aid drinking sissy-boys.

Here is a link to an archive with all the versions that I have saved.

FYI - stop the nonsense YouTube ads with this awesome Chrome extension... SponsorBlock. It is my Windows substitute for Vanced MicroG on Android. Never wait for a video to play or be interrupted during the video again by advertisements.

Remember to spam F8 and select the option disable DSE because some are unsigned. Or, just disable it permanently using an admin command prompt, then run the Test Mode Watermark Disabler script. (The latter is the best way... one and done.)

bcdedit /set TESTSIGNING ON

I tried updating XTU recently, and the garbage OS Windows 11 wouldn't let me because it couldn't find an uninstaller of the earlier version (which probably got deleted by M$'s own system cleanup utility). Whatevs.
