WOW....I am speechless. I've known you for over 10 years now and I can't recall you ever having such a bad run on CPUs or situations ever.

Well, I did have the X299 Rampage motherboard that caught fire a while back, and then the Z490 Apex that failed and killed a 10900KF of excellent bin quality. But, nothing on the order of magnitude recently. It is pretty unbelievable. Between the money wasted on Ryzen trash and the recent series of unfortunate outcomes, I could have built a 12th Gen setup with the best motherboard and RAM available with money left over.

@Mr. Fox has the worst luck I have ever seen, dude its like supernatural like you were picked by god 😛

Maybe God wants me to pay more attention to Him and more important matters, and less on this hobby. While I have had a string of very unfortunate circumstances with PC tech, the most recent was my own fault. There was a still small voice telling me not to spend money on Ryzen and I did it anyway. Things have been on a downhill spiral since then. But, there are millions of people in more severe life challenges than I have tolerated. If I keep things in perspective, I am still greatly blessed.

I do believe that everything happens for a reason, not due to fate. But, I don't know what it is yet. Hopefully, someday I will. We commonly use the word "luck" to describe the occurrence of good or bad events in our lives, but I don't actually believe in luck in its strictest definition. There is just not a better word for it, so that is the word we use.

I guess my bad luck streak isn't over. 😞

That CPU died. I can't see anything wrong with it. After benching it earlier today, I set it back to 5.3GHz all core at 1.265V.  I used the computer for several more hours, then I had dinner with two of my kids and their families. I came back a couple of hours later, set the BIOS to defaults and flashed the firmware on BIOS position #2 with v1.10 from EVGA. When it shut down after flashing it never booted again. It also won't boot in the Strix mobo. It shows a VGA error on the Strix (VGA red LED comes on). It goes through the normal series of codes on the LCDs and acts like it is going to POST and then stops with a Q-code 24 on the Z490 Dark. I cannot find any documentation on Q-code 24.

So, I am back to using my SP81 10900K. It's not the firmware. I am using the BIOS I flashed with no issues.

I am really super bummed out. I got to use it 3 days. I don't understand how/why it happened. Makes no sense. $400 down the toilet. I think it is time for me to give up for real.

Damn. I hope the bad luck soon stop for you brother. One thing that never stop... Dell continue deliver trashware.

They sell pre-packaged bad luck. It is like playing the lottery in reverse. You get to decide how bad the loss will be once you load your shopping cart.

@ryan while I am not a fan of Wuxia and the female protagonist thing that has recently become weirdly popular, this game plays very well as a FPS and does an incredible job of showing how amazing ray tracing can look when it is at its best. There is a free benchmark for it.

so a 3090 can run high 2560x1440 and get a framerate of 132 and a laptop 3060 needs to be lowered to 1080p with dlss set to ultra performance and lowest settings.....i think its time to get a desktop

I've always kept a decent laptop and desktop combo for years. You get the best of both worlds. 💯

Date of Announcement 02.04.2020 = 691 days old

also i think your card will be good for another 3 years very high settings so no need to upgrade even if the 4000 series is amazing. same goes for me but in the end you paid more but who got the better bang for the buck? you..cost/5 per year whereas with me i get a solid 3 years and less performance your super is one level above a 3060 and i think on a 3070 level. correct me if im wrong..

I think when the 5000 series drops im going for a 5080. unless its like fermi. remember the 680/780/880m they were just rebrands and I see this happening in the near future

I bought my unit used from a very nice board member back on NBR  (he's also here if he's lurking right now 😀) so I didn't pay anywhere near retail new. Those who know me here know I never *EVER* buy laptops new. I always wait for used units and then optimize and tweak the snot out of them for optimal performance 🙂

lol here I thought you were just smart. it's even smarter buying used from trusted members on NBR. yeah thats one killer laptop man. 2080 super? do you use it for 3d modeling?

thats my guess as you probably max most older games at 144hz and can cap alot of new games around 100

I remember NBR vets telling me 144hz is a big jump from 60fps. but honestly for me not most I don't feel it im not a twitch gamer and mainly racing and fps some strategy games. I just don't notice it. one time I had it set to 60hz when I first got the laptop and thought wow this is fast..lol had no clue it was capped at 60, so i switched to 144hz and noticed nothing. i think going from 25fps-30fps is huge and going from 30-60fps is also a huge step up but 60-144hz not so much.

Everyone has different tolerance to refresh rate.  For me, I can tell when a setting is wrong and my monitor is limited to 60hz.  Having said that, I can still game with pleasure at 60hz, but if given the choice I'd rather at least 120hz...

I can definitely tell the difference between 60hz and 144hz but I have no problems playing at 60hz for most games. My main 32" 4k display is 60hz but when I play on the two laptops I have that are 144hz or I use the dell 25" 144hz display I can definitely see the difference along with 1080p gaming is throwing out serious fps.

@ryan I used to run a P870TM1 w/ a 1060 but with the WoW Shadowlands engine upgrade even at 1080p it was chugging in the 40's @ 1080p even at Setting 7/10 in some areas so I upgraded. After dialing in the CPU, GPU and especially memory I sit at 144fps Ultra 10 @ 1080p on the X170SM-G with fans never going close to max so I'm good to go.

I am not sure what that link is for. Maybe it was posted in error?

A desktop even with an older GPU like 2080 Ti would be a significant performance upgrade over a laptop. Here is that benchmark run on my work desktop with "High" and "Very High" settings.

You can tell the difference even dragging a Windows Explorer window around on your desktop. It will move with a bit of jitter or jerkiness to it on a 60Hz display as compared to being very smooth looking at 120Hz or higher. You generally won't notice anything looking at static images, only when motion is involved. I would not consider it dramatic as much as noticeable. The real benefit is for those sensitive to screen tearing if your gaming framerate is much higher than the refreshrate. If you are generally in the 60-75 FPS range, then you may not be able to notice any huge improvment.  If you are sensitive to screen tearing, being able to avoid V-sync and G-Stink is a plus because you don't have any input lag or performance degradation running with both of those "features" disabled.

The question is malformed, but its quite commonly worded that way.

We do not see in FPS/Hz although it can be measured to some degree in that manner. We perceive motion so when you have a screen that grants greater degree of fluid motion, it can be appreciated.

Here is 3090 again, run at 1920*1080 High and Very High, and 2560*1440 High and Very High.

Roughly measured, 2080 Ti 1920*1080 High is about equivalent to 3090 2560*1440 Very High.

i got 37000 at 720p. 1080p is locked out

Nice. Did you get a Steam key for it? That should unlock all of the options. Last time I checked, the installer at catzilla.com was newer than the version on Steam.

im broke at the moment or is it free? i get paid tomorrow

also how the heck do I post pictures in here? do I have to use imagebb its a real pain and alot of times they display incorrectly but with yours they are always posted perfect

I just got the free unlock code but nothing changed. thought it would unlock 1080p, I don't think i'll buy it as its a bit dated and relies heavily on cpu at lower resolutions. I really liked that infinite benchmark though just gorgeous

lmao, this is going to be fun, just spent 2000 and the future holds 28fps maxed at 1080p lol

heres the result, i'd imagine games will run like this in the coming years

also I downloaded breakpoint, and can't seem to get the magical 144hz it tops out at 109fps average on all medium. and im not bothering with low as i'll never play it on low
