Having tested and used Gen3, Gen4 and Gen5, I honest cannot tell them apart other than benchmark scores and higher temps as the drive speed increases. Anything as fast or faster than SATA SSD feels the same to me in normal daily use. For the vast majority of users this is a worthless upgrade and unless it is free it isn't worth having and certainly not worth spending anything extra for. Almost seems silly to pursue it to me. It is a gimmick that gives the manufacturers something new and more expensive to sell to people that won't benefit from the purchase.

I go after 4K random read/write. More important than the high Sequential speed you have for the bragging rights.

Agreement.

I have done alot of smooth gaming at 4k with my 3060, the big issue is having to dial down an important setting like textures due to vram constraints, however sometimes its a very minor downgrade visually. As for smoothness 60 is my sweet spot, 40 feels good 60 is like butter and 120 as i just found out isn't for everyone, some will notice it others wont I fall in the latter category. With everything and all things considered a budget system scoring 20k on cpu and 20k on gpu in time spy is great indicator of what to expect for the next few years, smooth gaming and doesn't break the bank unless your like me(given great advice) and doing the opposite due to mental issues. excuses I know, but even I can't explain it.

3080 and 12th gen i7 is what I want but unless its 1000- 1500 cad its a no go. Can wait it out, tides will always ebb and flow and so will prices.

@bros

found this, finally after searching and checking and rechecking sites I found this, i wont be upgrading it, just buying it selling it and enjoying a few games.

1290$$$ CAD and 3080 open box vs refurbished and in poor condition.\

Open Box - ASUS ROG Strix G15DK Gaming PC (AMD Ryzen 7 5800X Desktop Processor/1TB SSD/32GB RAM/GeForce RTX 3080) | Best Buy Canada

edit.

cancelled order as the 5800x isnt very good in 2024. i have no idea whats a good deal for a desktop, whole-nother ball game. laptops just pick the specs and expect heat. desktops have more versatility..upgrade paths

a good desktop costs too much. i need 2x the performance to have a reason to buy. 3070 and 3060ti or 4060 just isnt worth it. as for upgradeability. I doubt ill have money for a 5090($6k)

Being an owner of an Optane 905P SSD myself, I can attest that I can notice the difference between that and a Samsung 970 Evo Plus, but not the difference between a 970 Evo Plus and a 990 Pro.

Significant gains in random read/write speed things up immensely. Pair an Optane SSD with a fast CPU and high speed, low latency RAM, and you get very fast load times in games, faster than with those gen 5 NVME SSDs. Optane just absolutely smokes everything else except in sequential transfer speeds. It's really good for my software development workflow and great for gaming!

I still love laptops, I plan on getting them in the near future. I am better with them than desktops and they are familiar. I scored 1st in gpu with just about every laptop iv'e ever owned and unless its a farce and alot of submissions are being excluded Im happy with the success and failures. as far as a war goes, both have strengths and weaknesses no right descison. I like the compact design and hate the overheating, its neat to see something small perform so well and playing my favorite gaming on a 1400p display from a few feet back is a great experience. same can be said for desktops they just lack the wow factor as they are huge and heavy and non portable. I want a desktop to add to my collection and thats all that missing I have tablets ultrabooks a gaming laptop a basic laptop and a creation device or two, i'd like to start a youtube channel and share some things with people such as how newer is always better ect. but seriously im a little depressed that the world seems to have come to a hault. I can't think of more than 3 games that will be released in the next five years that are actually worth more than 4 bucks. back when I started gaming it was 1 great game a month. not sure whats up but I can't change it.

Hang in there man! Ignore all the negativity and just enjoy your life. No need to get worked up over things we can't control. If people want to be stupid, let them be stupid in a nice faraway area sequestered away from everyone else so they don't negatively affect anyone else.

I've kinda gone the same way regarding having a device for every use case. I've never been able to find that "do it all" machine, so now I have a desktop, a laptop, and a handheld. My Lenovo Legion Go serves me well in situations where it's not practical to pull a laptop out, and then I have my laptop for other mobile use cases. The thing is, I also stay home about 95% of the time nowadays, so going back to desktops made sense. I still like having my mobile devices for that last 5% where I'd actually use their capabilities cause it's better to be prepared for everything.

Hey everyone, long time no see! I seriously lost total interest in computers lately for a little while. I was only using my system for work and gaming. Like most normal people I suppose lol 😆 but after re-doing my Supercool direct die mount I’ve reeled my self right back in that rabbit hole.

We just finally closed on our home construction loan. But we still have a little ways before we are actually moved in. Should be November this year when we get the certification of occupancy. We have to wait for the new home to be ordered and built. It’s already ordered but this building process takes 4 months.

Next step is clearing the lot (This lot is nothing but trees and woods 0.997 acres), then of course they will level the ground and make a concrete pad for the home to sit on. We are only clearing the minimum amount of trees to make a driveway, and for our house. The privacy is going to be nice.

The house is a full Sheetrock double wide.

The closing process was very tough though. We nearly didn’t get the land. So many random things came up. I’m glad that’s over with though. Now it’s just a waiting game for our home to be built.

Since COVID and the massive incompetent mismanagement of everything relating to business and government occurred, things like this take WAY LONGER than they used to, and usually cost WAY MORE than appropriate.

Buying a house used to take 2 to 4 weeks start to finish for anyone with good credit and now it takes 30-60 days.

Having the privacy will be nice and so will having the trees. I take it you will have no HOA and not a managed or "planned" community. When you have HOAs and managed housing projects they generally come in with a bulldozer and level everything, so any trees and landscaping are recreated from scratch. Nice that you get to decide how it looks and how you want to do things. Having no HOA fees every month, not having any CCRs to restrict you from doing whatever you want, and not having to ask for approval or permission to do things, would also be nice.

Besides @tps3443 and his 14900k, does anyone have a 13900k/14900k with a V/F point at 4200/4300 <0.970 or below? I've seen a few out in the wild and the lowest I've seen is 0.964. Starting the preliminary work for binning a chip for the NH55 laptop to add to my collection. 🙂

Have you that article where someone combines Amd Fluid Motion Frames and DLSS for an insane framerate increase? Now that sounds like a fun experiment. I wonder what the latency is and what that would feel like.

Yeah saw that, not a huge fan of FSR / DLSS as it seems to become more and more needed to run higher frame rates on some newer titles.

That being said I suppose it could be possible, though Im on ITX, I have extended its potential past what most are willing to tolerate with such a scenario. I'll grab some pictures when I get home later today so you guys can get a laugh or two out of it.

Used to have a certain threshold for how my PC's ran, ever since getting the open air rig that @Mr. Fox linked many many moons ago it has uhh, well oyou all will see tonight lol I call it "Doing it Wrong" and @Hiew likes to poke at me saying I play games on a file server.

A much too large NVME heatsink that keeps it running at 32c.

I noticed here that the PSB was beginning to bend where the pcie clip is, addressed it later.

Locking it in, later moved the frame to the end. Now running an ITX motherboard with a spare pcie slot thanks to NVME.

How the desk is more or less set up, some cable clean up has been done since then.

Everything was plug and play, kind of just happen to have all the right material to make it work out the way I wanted.

CPU fans are also pointed inward so as to push air through the NVME heatsink and by extension the 3090 backplate. NVME tends to only sit at 32c and my junction temp (3090) tends to peak around 84-86c.

Some degree of PCB bending is expected on any motherboard that does not have a backplate. Even these ungodly expensive Apex motherboards are bent when they are brand new. For the absurd price they sell for, not having a backplate is kind of inexcusable. But, ASUS ROG products have never been a brand that offers genuine value. They offer compelling features that people are willing to allow themselves to be financially raped in order to have them. Rarely ever is there any real basis in value based on build quality or QC.

Today (already passed 00:00) is Norway's Constitution Day The 17, May

And here home in central Norway we have wonderful weather. We have for the moment the warmest weather in the whole country. 25-28C. Very rare this happen in the spring month. Yup, finally I can have the use for the AC part in the combined heat/cold pump I bought last fall.

Close to 28C is almost as hot it is in @Mr. Fox land in the spring😀 But me being saved by the new AC unit, HaHa

Today we will go out and eat good food and drinks. Of course I will sit out in this weather. No time for me sitting inside with computers🤩

Happy Constitution Day. It sounds like you're getting some beautiful weather that is uncommon for Norway. Tomorrow it will be 38°C here and probably 28°C inside of my office, LoL. So your weather there is preferable at the moment. Enjoy the sunshine, brother.

I broke my big toe a couple of days ago. It's looking much better but still doesn't feel great.

Uh oh.....Asus repair is now in GN's crosshairs....

I wonder what Asus will charge for swapping out the small nvidia power connector forwards... The half? Aka $1400 USD ? Premium priced products need premium prices for repairs. The Apple way. And what with the rest of the world? Same price philosophy?

Recent feedback has highlighted some gaps in our RMA communication process in the US and Canada

  • We are revising our repair pricing structure for out-of-warranty products; this includes a thorough review process for any abnormal pricing to ensure consistency, transparency and fairness.

The $200 scam could I live with from Asus. But $2750 fee for replacing the small cute GPU power connector is harder to swallow. It seems Asus can live very well with bad reputation.

Asus quotes ridiculous $2,750 fee to replace chipped GPU power connector— docs back up claims of egregious repair pricing for $2,000 RTX 4090 GPU

Here is what to expect for tomorrows new modern tech. More of Thermal throttling algorithm and software/drivers to handle it is the gods saviour. Give with one hand then take it back with the other hand.

Intel's answer to PCIe 6 heat concerns is a driver that throttles bus speeds

Higher transfer speeds come at a cost

The new PCIe bandwidth controller driver has been through five revisions so far as Intel engineers continue refining the thermal throttling implementation. It's not finalized yet, but adoption is likely coming in the next year or so.
