Official Clevo X170SM-G Thread

I think I am going to hold off on another laptop till DDR5 or DD6 is available, hopefully the X170SM-G will last me that long, and hopefully PCIE 5 will be out too. I heard something is already getting ready to replace M.2 NVMe's

Just for shits and Giggles I went to Apples website earlier and configured a Loaded Mac Pro desktop.... $48,950.  Then I reminded myself that I have an X170SM-G.  lol

Hi there, there was a problem with the X170SM. The laptop was taken new in August, 2022, everything worked fine, but the day before yesterday the battery stopped charging.

The learn of the problem found that two power supplies do not work at the same time. In other words, if you connect only one (any), then the battery power is turned on. BIOS and EC flashed new ones (XMG). Did a full BIOS reset.

I tried different parameters in the unlocked BIOS, but there are no results. At this night, both power supplies were connected, but the battery did not charge.

Who has faced such a problem and how to solve it?

If it has a 24-core 13900HX and a RTX 4090 Mobile then I’ll get it. I love the 18” form factor. I still have my M18xR1, M18xR2 and AW 18.

im not getting the razer blade 18 as I’ve heard nothing but bad news regarding their quality/customer service. It’ll definitely be the alienware x18. If my x14 i got from black friday is any indication then I trust their 18 will be good. Every spec is sounding good from what I’ve heard 😉 just waiting to see if they put a subwoofer back in for audio.

Every laptop next year is bga unless clevo releases a lga cpu + bga gpu 15” like they do sometimes.

wouldnt that depend on what Nvidia might call a "4090 mobile"? we might end up with a 4070 chip that they just elevate to a 4090 cuz...theyre crazy like that 😄

4090 Mobile is based on 103 core so its based off of desktop 4080 at least 😉

not looking to max it out since I wanna see what the 18” laptops coming out next year will pack.

they won't pack full desktop level graphics cards, that's for sure.

RTX 30 series wasn't full desktop level graphics cards either. But 40 series will still be faster than 30 series.

30 series was a joke on laptops.

10/20 series was the best gen in terms of having performance closest to their desktop counterparts.

So true.

3000 series barely beat the 2000 series as the 2000 series was the last true desktop equivalent on laptops. I don't think we'll ever see the 1:1 DTR days of Pascal and Turing.

But with the die shrink and much better power envelope of the 4000 series I expect a major leap in performance this time around even boxed into 150-200w.

Yeah it's quite sad. My 2080 in Area-51m gets over 27k fs stock gpu score. 3080 was around 30k stock. 10% increase. 2080 super in area-51m r2 was like 29k.

We definitely won't see 10/20 level parity between notebook/desktop again

on a side note my X170SM-G is coming tomorrow. Hope I made the right choice getting a cheaper new open box X170SM-G over a used pricier X170KM-G

Overall the X170SM-G is less problematic and if you find a way has access to Prema. It can use the exact same array of GPUs as the KM.

Remember, X170KM-G was so problematic that Prema abandoned his BIOS development for it if that tells you anything.

Something doesn't seem right. If you got this new from zTecPC you may want to check with them about your findings.

You would expect Prema Bios and working audio out of the box so better to sort that out first before diving in.

I just checked zTecPCs website and they no longer list or promote Prema on their existing ZtecPC units for sale so at some point for whatever units they have to sell it gets the stock treatment now but it never hurts to ask.

That would suck, I thought it was a given that all their X170SM-G would get the Prema bios. In any case it surely doesn't hurt to ask.

congratz man!

as for SB, thats a known issue on Clevo, ull probably need to try lots of different stock drivers to find exactly the right one that works for ur machine. then make sure u dont lose it! 😄

I just checked zTecPCs website and they no longer list or promote Prema on their existing ZtecPC units for sale so at some point for whatever units they have to sell it gets the stock treatment now but it never hurts to ask.

well that sucks... 😞

Hi, I'm new here, thought I'd say thank you! I also have a Clevo machine (PCS UK) which is X170SM-G and PremaBIOS, which is impossible to get... I talked to whoever I could and there is no chance of getting it (this is not possible from the manufacturer's side either...) Clevo itself did not allow it either. Unfortunately! 🙄
