dying already? well, that's a good sign.

Any abusive use or weird testing ?

EDIT:

just saw the later answers..well damn

Yeah, normal to even lighter than normal use. I was getting it all set up for some travel in a few weeks and putting Fallout 76 on it to go along with my WoW install and boom.....

wait, are those the same Donald & Zoltan that used to work over at HIDEvolution? No idea if theyre still around though, but back in the NBR day they were basically the EVGA for Clevos with tons of custom upgrades available (but also at premium pricing).

Yeah, Donald has an excellent relationship with the community generally. There were a couple of times that i recall some were not happy with Donald but I believe most of those cases were resolved behind the curtain.

Yep, Donald and Zoltan both left HIDevolution and went to ZtecPC awhile back. Last I had talked to Donald. he had retired to get some much deserved R&R.

Update: Just heard back from ZtecPC and hurray! Zoltan still works there (he is the one who contacted me). I'll let him know the NBR refugees have set up shop here on NBT. Going to give the X170SM-G a clean install and schedule a remote session for next week.

@ViktorV is right with the diagnostic. Most of the times code 43 and those kind of artifacts leads to a memory bank (or more) with cold joints or ripped pads underneath. Get MATS, run it and post the results.

Do you have a link to the newest (or at least >=400.xx) version? I'll give it a run before remote diagnostics next week.

Hello everyone in this thread.
Thanks to friend @wilpang for his wonderful X170SM.
I want to ask if there are owners with delid CPUs and liquid metal on top?

How much does it actually improve temperatures?
With XTU, I removed the limits on my 10700, it works freely at 4600 MHz and consumes up to 140W in peaks.
Since I managed to lower the voltage with XTU only by 70mV, the temperatures reach up to 85-88 degrees in a long BF2042 session.
Therefore, I want to understand what is worth it in the first place, or do everything) (delid, replace IHS on CPU, liquid metal instead of paste and maybe even a frame for direct contact)

It depends on your heatsink. I got my X170SM-G from zTecpc, and they made some modifications to the heatsink to improve the cooling. The CPU coldplate is also very flat. I have a delidded CPU, have the Rockitcool full copper IHS, and have liquid metal between the IHS and heatsink.

All these things in tandem with my 10900K being a good chip has allowed me to do 5.4 GHz all core in games (not 100% load stress tests!). Some very CPU instensive games will cause the CPU power draw at this speed to momentarily spike to 275 watts, with an average of around 220 watts. I am only a few degrees away from thermal throttling at this point even with max fans.

In general, each of the improvements that were made on my laptop opened up an extra bin (extra 100 MHz) for me. I got a good 400 MHz boost in all-core speeds for gaming. I think I am the only person on the planet currently with a 10900K running at such a speed in this laptop.

Your mileage will vary as there are multiple factors that will determine the benefit you'll get from delidding + liquid metal. Is your CPU an i7-10700 or i7-10700K? In either case, I'd expect at least an 8°C drop in temperature from a delid + liquid metal between the IHS + heatsink.

Approximately, what modifications are we talking about?

It's worth it 100%

I ordered a full cooper IHS, will deal with these temperatures. 👊🏻

10700 non-K for now, while looking for something suitable at a good price.

The modifications to the heatsink by zTecpc include according to them: a 3 part thermal mod to improve temperatures. They never detailed what those things were, but I have some guesses.

I think one of those things is K5 Pro on the GPU's VRAM instead of thermal pads. I'm guessing the second modification is using shorter screws for the heatsink to increase mounting pressure. The third modification must be the addition of washers on top of the screw holes to further increase mounting pressure.

The heatsink is also of high quality. There have been complaints of warped heatsinks on Clevo laptops in the past, but this one is pretty much perfectly flat.

They also cut off the 4th retention bracket/arm for the CPU as it prevented deeper mounting pressure and caused an uneven mount:

Submitted a few videos to Ztecpc showing the 2080 Super failing in spectacular fashion. They are now looking to source a 2080 Super replacement from Clevo. Once sourced, I'll send it in for replacement. No field / self service available. I would have preferred to do it myself, but it is what it is.

I'll end up resetting everything and putting the old memory back in and 256GB singular drive with a clean install for ease on their end.

I wonder in such scenarios they could upgrade you to the rtx 3080?. From what I recall the 2080 Super was somewhat rare in comparison to the other GPU's in wild.

The only issue there is I would need the KM heatsink to go along with it but if they couldn't source it but could source a 3080 and KM heatsink I would gladly take that replacement. 🙂

I'm traveling in less than two weeks and I wanted to take my X170SM-G along with me to play Fallout 76 so that was why I was setting it up and getting it updated but the 2080 Super went south. I'm glad it went south now versus being on the go.

Worst case scenario is I'll just take my MSI Pulse 12700h/3070 with me but it can't compete with the X170SM-G gaming as the 2080 Super is faster, memory is dialied in and the CPU doesn't throttle at all.

Got a question

I'd like to limit the battery charge, if possible so that it doesn't degrade as much when it's plugged in other than simply removing it altogether, I seem to remember there are some clevo stock apps for such a thing but cannot find them anymore, does anyone have them?

Thanks a lot

I needed space for Photo and Video work so took the hit because there are some black friday deals coming up on NVME and SATA M.2's. I am running 3 2TB NMVE's and 1 2TB M.2 SATA in my X170SM-G now. 4TB drives are still really expensive.

I might replace the 2 TB NVME's with Samsun EVO 990 4TB drives when they come out next year.

iirc u should have an option in bios called battery flex or smth similar. u can set when it starts and stops charging, i.e. start at below 70% and stop at 90% or so.

@Snowleopard u mean 990 pro? havent heard of any 990 evo drives yet.

also, whats stopping u from going with 4TB sata drives? u can get the 860/870 Evo lines at 4TB for like 350-400€ new and 200-350€ used. if u then need more speed just RAID 0 them up and off u go 🙂

also, whats stopping u from going with 4TB sata drives? u can get the 860/870 Evo lines at 4TB for like 350-400€ new and 200-350€ used. if u then need more speed just RAID 0 them up and off u go 🙂

Sorry, yes the 990 Pro 😄  .... The 4TB 860/870's are not M.2, There is no spot for 2.5 inch drives in the x170...lol  The M.2 Sata drive I went with was the Western Digital Blue 2TB, it came with a 5 year warranty but it wasn't my first choice.

well that sucks then if u only have M.2 slots to populate... makes high capacity drives quite expensive indeed. and yeah, im curious to see what the 990 pro will bring to the table, supposed to be released by end of this year / beginning of next. judging by the specs known so far, this shouldve been the drive that 980 Pro didnt turn out to be if u ask me 😅

Are the x170SM-G's still maxed out with RTX 20x cards? I remember on NBR people were trying to upgrade to RTX30x cards and the case had to be modified? and any word on RTX 40x cards for clevos yet? Trying to think about future upgrades..... I am running the 780w single power supply.

On x170smg, 30 series cards work fine, but you need to modify the driver and install a heatsink from x170kmg, the heatsink fits without any modifications. The release of 40 series cards in mxm format is highly doubtful, the probability that Clevo will do this is negligible and unlikely.

Where do I find the instructions for the driver modifications?
