Should i just leave my machine alone if it works ? Yes one ram slot doesnt work. Yes im getting duel channel with 2 sticks under the keyboard at 3200.

Thats a great idea though doing a dry run to see if they are making contact. What sizes are the smaller ones .5mm ? and larger is 2.5mm ?

I think im going to try and see how much HID would sell me a board maybe it would be cheaper then Eurocom.

At this point, I would just use it as in its current config unless you absolutely need to populate all 4 slots.

More chance of it being 0.5mm to 2.0mm and in between. Just get a few of them then do the testing. Once you have done that let me know as the pads you linked is the pads i am going to be using myself, Unless the Minus Plus Extreme is buyable although i would then buy both to do a comparasion.

Hey guys

I have good news. I just reseaved the CPU/GPU screws. Im 99% convinced the motherboard is the orignal Issue even before i butchered it. I found a work around to play cyber punk with my monitor. I launch the game using the laptop screen then switch to the external then restart to adjust settings. It works every time. Im not yet ready to pull the trigger on the new board but im pretty close. Im trying to sqeeze as much info out of HID as possbile and they really dont want to help you it seems which is really frustrating considering how much i spent to have this machine. It feels like pulling teath with them. Im just trying to firm up that HID will update the bios for me when i change the board or i will just have to do it myself. Do you guys have the Bios 1.07.07 and fireware 1.07.03 ? I also would like to do a Video/Live stream taking it apart that i will post

Haven had much time to play with the X170 lately, but here’s an update.

Did a CB23 and scored 15388

TS settings:

-96mv Core, -85 Cache

PL1 152

PL2 200

TAO 126

Ring down bin Disabled

Windows power settings at 100%, performance mode, all that was done long time ago.
Still seeing clock speed slowly throttling down. It starts at 85c/4.9Ghz for the first 2 minutes, then temps start to climb to 94c while clock start to drop off. After about 6 minutes temps are 92c and clocks are down to 4.3Ghz.

Im sure I’m doing something wrong or this CPU is just a Hot mess.

I even reapplied the rest of my liquid metal to the CPU/heatsink, no change.

Is this during CB testing? As that's avx instruction based so you CPU will get slammed and become a hot mess. Did you have max fans on as well, or just the stock fan curve.

Also 6 minutes is past TOU time of 126 seconds so it would fall to PL1 from PL2.

As for temps, did you check your CPU mount (Paste wise) to see if you have a decent contact.

Does HId use a custom bios? Aka did it have their logo on it during boot.

Easy way to tell me is to go into bios and give me the full firmware version then place in here, if its stock Clevo bios then their is plenty of places to get the files.

Even @Jaggy84 knows this 😉

When i was on 1.07.06 it booted with the EVOC Logo and it was insyde bios. The bios they gave me which was the 1.07.07 was not a HID bios. The logo on boot was Style note

Wouldnt getting a new board from either Eurocom or HID allow me to get any bios from clevo ?

Yes, all this was during CB23. I’ll look into AVX. Max Fans were on. I started switching to max fans during a bench after @electrosoft mentioned it.

I will be opening up the cpu again (possibly run it bare die with some polyimide tape to protect the edges) may reapply a liquid metal… anyway.

Max fans allow from the onset optimal cooling so you know at peak what your system is capable of dissipating since ramp up can sometimes be outpaced initially by thermals and you'll potentially get pockets of thermal throttling and the system may step down the frequency never to regain it in some situations. You may find yourself in some runs thinking your system can't handle it when it is really the fans playing catch up. It's the best way to know if your system is up to snuff if pushed to max.

Later on you can play with fan tables to dial in a preferred curve.

A few users ran their P870TM1's + 9900k's direct die with some mods and had absolutely fantastic results on NBR. I suspect you could achieve similar with an X170KM/SM.

Style Note is stock Clevo bios bud. I do have instructions on how to flash the bios as well as zip files to accomodate said said instructions which are the firmware and the efi files required to get into efi shell.

HID is saying its just a standard Clevo mother board for the X170

Sounds about right. Origin was the one known for having slight modifications in their Clevo systems that would cause foreign BIOS flashes to be problematic.

With that all being said i will most likely go with the HID one because i would have better recoarse in the future with bios flashes. They might not do it if i get it from Eurocom even if its the same motherboard.

@Sydneyblue Well i am now laptop less as well, took CPU out of socket to clean and have bent pins, so its getting collected tomorrow by PCSpecialist to be repaired. See i told you not to feel stupid it happens to us all.

Not sure how i bent the pins however i have to pay labour for them to bend them back if they can or £350 for a new mainboard.

So on my R61e again for 3 weeks.

Say it isnt so man.

I still using my machine right now with the 2 sticks under the keyboard working in duel channel. The dimm slots under the back are the ones that dont work in duel channel because one dimm slot doesnt boot when its populated.

Are you running 4 sticks ?

It is so, and i am only running 2 sticks. It powers up and LED's come on but no POST nothing after that. 2 Sticks are under the back cover.

PCSpecialist have arranged pick up tomorrow, will then try to bend the pins back else i will have to wait for a new board to come in stock as they only have the X170SM boards in stock right now.

So i tried to get my ol GT72 working and that also sh1t the bed and died which leaves me my Lenovo R61e and a GMA950 so no gaming no for possibly a while, all of this was down to a Twitter picture of a nasty PC that needed cleaning that triggered my OCD. So if you though that you was stupid i took that crown big time and then some.

If they bend pin back and it works then all is good its £35 else its £350 for a new mainboard when they get one in stock. Thankfully most of my important stuff is now on my NAS and VM's but thats for coding and modding.

I feel the pain my friend. Did you try and run with one stick ?. Could these clevo motherboards be extra sentive more then other 1200 boards. I never had a issue in the past with swapping Intel cpu before this

Many times pins are bent when you:

Try to clean excess TIM and snag pins with the cloth/Q-tip

Attempt to put the CPU in on an angle and push pins versus a flat mount

Accidentally drop the chip when extracting it and it slips

Inadvertently drop/hit the pins when the socket is open and vulnerable.

----------------

Did you take any pictures of the socket with the bent pins?

Sorry to hear you both had bad encounters with pins. 😞 Hopefully everything turns out well enough in the end.

@electrosoft I didn't take photo's of the bent pins as my mind wasn't think i was too busy puking up and going into despair (Its now in the box ready to be collected).

Also i always took the CPU out of socket to clean it so that no q-tip could cause issues during cleaning or thermal paste getting into it. I haven't once dropped a CPU into the socket and i try to always remove the CPU out straight however my hands are not steady so its a possibility that happened.

However after this when i get it back i will not be doing anything to the laptop other then replacing the storage drives and os drive.

I have also decided that my physical tech support is coming to an end.

The downside is PCSpecailist only has the X170SM mainbaords in stock and not the X170KM boards so yeah a board replacement might be the 3rd thing to go wrong and just make my time even more bad then it is now.

Being stuck at home since begining of the pandemic completely isolated from the world, other then Online Gaming with my online friends as i don't have IRL friends is going to make this a lot more painful then it already is.

@Sydneyblue I didn't try with one stick as i didn't want to risk frying the CPU any more if the pins that was bent was to do with voltage rather then ground. The less i messed with it the greater the chance it might get fixed easier.
