Microsoft is going to stop allow people to use Windows 7, Windows 8, and Windows 8.1 keys to activate Windows 10/11.

...Or so they say.

https://arstechnica.com/?p=1972170

It appears that this only applies to new versions of Windows 11.  If you have an older version, you can still activate with an old Windows 7/8 key (for now).  So, presumably you could save a Windows 11 22H2 ISO, use it to activate with an old key, and then upgrade to the current Windows 11 build with Windows Update.

isnt windows 11 base lower than windows 10 users.? so theyll have less users.

i did test 23H2 iso yesterday and installed ok. i guess in the future the will block this just like they did on requirements for windows 11

Windows 10 Still More Popular Than Windows 11, Two Years Later

According to StatCounter, Windows 10 holds an impressive 71.64% of the world's total Windows-based operating system market share, while Windows 11 holds just 23.61%.

Windows 11's lackluster market share is understandable given its mixed reception overall.

Windows 11 now has more features than Windows 10 — including Microsoft's new AI co-pilot, as well as widgets and full DirectStorage support — many people still prefer Windows 10's older user interface. (Even our Editor-in-Chief, Avram Piltch, still prefers Windows 10 on his main machine, due to its smaller, more customizable start menu and simpler context menu.)

So, that's good. I guess. It means 71.64% of Windows users can be assumed to be smarter than the minority. It's unfortunate that the Redmond Reprobates can't figure out that their "features" and "improvements" are not useful or appreciated, and some are viewed as loathesome.

No surprise there, TPM 2.0 is preventing older PCs to upgrade downgrade to Windows 11 even though there is a workaround for it. The marketshare proves that Windows 11 shouldnt exist at all and they're currently working on Windows 12 that'll be released sometime next year.

On a positive note at least we Windows 10 users dont have to worry about anymore broken updates 😆

They are already talking about Windows 12...... I don't want AI doing anything in my Operating System and I don't want telemetry either...... Windows will become the next Facebook, all it is is an advertising platform and if you pay for a license, you should be able to shut it off.

...and that's despite all the nastiness they go through to push winduhz 11 on you.

The other day, after booting up into Windows, instead of a login screen I was greeted with a Windows 11 logo, and at first it seemed like they just pushed the update. After taking a closer look, it was a "please upgrade to this bs OS" screen. Funny thing is, it took me a bit to discover a tiny-blurred-into-background "not now" button at the bottom of the screen. And the only other two (very prominent) buttons in the middle of the screen were essentially the same - "Install now" or "Download now and install later" :classic_laugh:

You'd think this is where it ended, but after clicking "not now" and actually logging in to the OS - I got another prompt to install w11 right away, again with all the tricks to actually make you click on the "install" button... wtf :classic_angry:

And I mean I know to "think twice before clicking anything". Imagine now many people actually fell for this clickbait bs.

And then you have all the new laptops coming with W11 also, and all the corporate users being forced to use W11. So I'd estimate that the real number of users who actually want to use it is way lower than that even.

Yes, I have a 4K 144Hz monitor. It is decent. The 4090 tears it up and barely breaks a sweat. The 6900 XT is not very good at 4K. It does an OK job with 1440p, but seems best suited for 1080p. It does not manage ray tracing very well at any resolution.

Nop. I also couldn't care less - I have absolutely zero plans on using it :classic_laugh: My only use-case for Win10 right now is occasional gaming, other than that - I use Linux daily and since some time ago even convinced my lady do to the same finally :classic_biggrin:

No real reason to not be able to voice their opinion on a tech forum. As long as its within our community rules I'd rather see it than not.

It'd be nice if Microsoft could make a new OS at some point, We still see elements from Windows NT/2000 in Windows 10/11.

To be fair, changing an OS is not necessarily straightforward, or possible (even if someone is really keen on doing it), so no wonder people stuck with a "live OS" - which is mutating into something they did not originally sign up for - are being vocal about their concerns.

There is an unintended point above though: no amount of loud complaining is going to change much in confrontation with a megacorporation like M$. One of the last concrete tools at people's disposal are their wallets.... until the tech industry achieves the Holy Grail: replace people with AIs and send them on Universal Income thus eliminating the pesky voting wallet issue. Think that's a sick joke? Watch some talks on AI featuring Sam Altman and related tech industry leaders.

Unfortunately, it's either people pick up the fight and accept some compromises involved in avoiding offending companies and products, or it's a humiliating surrender with all the long-term consequences.
