SuperMG
Hello everyone! Do you want to upgrade your old laptop MXM GPU? But you can't since the newest RTX Turing, Ampere and Ada aren't working with your eDP display? I have the solution for you! The backlight mod to enable eDP display for your MXM card! Finally the mystery was resolved on why these cards don't display in our eDP laptops. Every cards from Turing to Ada generation, from brands like Aetina, Adlink, PNY, ZRT and X-Vsion will work with this mod! What was the issue with these cards then? They were all lacking 3 essential pins. These pins are used to power on the panel. They are called backlight pins! Without them, your screen stays black, even if you have eDP or DP signal in the right video port. The solution: Making a solder-less mod, a flex FPC cable that allows to power the 3 backlight pins with ease! Version 1 manufactured. The 3 backlight pins are set in 23, 25 and 27 pins of the MXM slot and the MXM card. What we're trying to do is to power the backlight pins using the 3.3V from the pins 278 and 280, that's it! The flex cable is going to be insulated and will be able to handle high temperatures! I'll use double-sided insulated tape for the back side of the backlight pins, to secure the installation. Where can I get one? You might ask. You can purchase them online, I'll even give a PDF file for instructions. Price (without shipping): 16.5€ on PayPal Friendly 18€ on eBay We can finally have an RTX 4080 or an RTX 4090 in the master slot of the MXM and output thru the main eDP display! Clevo P870 with dual RTX 4090? P570WM with an RTX 4090?! P775 with an RTX 3080 Ti?! Will work with (for MXM slot that allows eDP or DP on DP_D and cards that lack the backlight pins) RTX A3000 (XVSION), RTX 3060, RTX 3070, RTX 3070 TI, RTX 3080, RTX 3080 Ti (ZRT, X-VSION) RTX 4050, RTX 4060, RTX 4070, RTX 4080, RTX 4090 (ZRT, X-VSION) RTX 3500 Ada (Aetina), RTX 5000 Ada (Aetina), RTX A4500, RTX 3000, RTX 4000, RTX 5000 (Aetina, PNY, Adlink) (Tell me if I forgot some cards) Brightness control works on my P570WM with 4080 and 4090 if the vbios is set to eDP out. Sleep mode and saving modes work. RTX 3000 PNY and RTX 4070 worked on the Clevo P870, need to test more cards such as 4080 and 4090. Disclaimer, Requirements! - This mod can work with laptops that have the eDP set to DP_D and has the backlight pins assigned in 23, 25 and 27 pins in the slot - The BIOS of the laptop shouldn't have any whitelist - The BIOS should be in pure-UEFI - You need to have an eDP display that supports DP 1.1-1.2 (2011-2013 laptops) at least for RTX Ampere GPU - You need to have an eDP display that supports DP 1.3-1.4 (2014-2019 laptops) at least for the new RTX Ada (or install/edit EDID data in the OS with old DP 1.1-1.2 screens) ___________________ After a lot of research and some testing with soldering, that's the conclusion to the solution! Thank you! Edited 19 hours ago by SuperMG News
SuperMG
I contacted ZRT, X-VSION to bring back the backlight supports, they didn't seem to care at all! So I stepped in!

TruenoG7
On 12/9/2025 at 17:23, SuperMG said: Hola a todos. Quieres actualizar tu vieja portátil MXM GPU? - Gracias. SuperMG
News, the production of the v1 is finally finished! I'll receive the 35 pieces I have ordered in 5 days. I hope they better fit between the MXM slot and the MXM card! There's a 0.15mm total thickness so it's good! But will they work in the real world? Let's test! So yes. I'll save 3 pieces for myself and I'll list 32 pieces online. Either PayPal payments or on eBay.

loopster
I've got an ADLINK RTX 3000 running in a Zbook 17 G1 with hybrid graphics enabled. Would this mod allow the card to display in hybrid graphics disabled-mode? I wonder what the performance difference would be...?
Aaron44126
17 minutes ago, loopster said: Would this mod allow the card to display in hybrid graphics disabled-mode? IIRC, Zbook 17 G1 uses LVDS for the display and not eDP, so this mod would not apply. (Newer NVIDIA laptop GPUs do not support LVDS at all. You can only use them by passing through the Intel integrated GPU.) 2 Apple MacBook Pro 16-inch, 2023 (personal) • Dell Precision 7560 (work) • Full specs in spoiler block below Info posts (Windows) — Turbo boost toggle • The problem with Windows 11 • About Windows 10/11 LTSC Spoiler Apple MacBook Pro 16-inch, 2023 (personal) M2 Max 4 efficiency cores 8 performance cores 38-core Apple GPU 96GB LPDDR5-6400 8TB SSD macOS 15 "Sequoia" 16.2" 3456×2234 120 Hz mini-LED ProMotion display Wi-Fi 6E + Bluetooth 5.3 99.6Wh battery 1080p webcam Fingerprint reader Also — iPhone 12 Pro 512GB, Apple Watch Series 8 Dell Precision 7560 (work) Intel Xeon W-11955M ("Tiger Lake") 8×2.6 GHz base, 5.0 GHz turbo, hyperthreading ("Willow Cove") 64GB DDR4-3200 ECC NVIDIA RTX A2000 4GB Storage: 512GB system drive (Micron 2300) 4TB additional storage (Sabrent Rocket Q4) Windows 11 Enterprise LTSC 2024 15.6" 3940×2160 IPS display Intel Wi-Fi AX210 (Wi-Fi 6E + Bluetooth 5.3) 95Wh battery 720p IR webcam Fingerprint reader Previous Dell Precision 7770, 7530, 7510, M4800, M6700 Dell Latitude E6520 Dell Inspiron 1720, 5150 Dell Latitude CPi
SuperMG
If some of you didn't see. Hello, here are some news about the flex FPC cables! Yes I got them and I applied them easily on the GPU with my bare fingers. Here's the result, an RTX 3080 MXM (DP, non-eDP) inside a 2012 laptop's master MXM slot! 1080p 120Hz, Sleep/Saving modes work! Brightness control works for my laptop but it depends... maybe for yours it won't work. My laptop is using the DP 1.1 or 1.2 protocol. I tried the 4080/4090 (DP++), they worked, displayed on the main eDP screen but they failed the drivers installation because of a blackscreen after Nvidia checking the display/connectors. Because my laptop and its screen is too old to accept the obligatory DP++ (DP 1.3/1.4 protocol). Maybe a different vbios of the 4080/4090 with a basic DP or eDP would work on my laptop? If your laptop is from 2015-2019, the RTX 4080/4090 will work because yours is compatible with DP++. I'll test that using a P870 and a Dell Precision 7720. So yes, Nvidia Pascal isn't the best generation anymore for our MXM laptops, it's Ampère/Ada!

SuperMG
Good some news!! After playing around with EDID configurations and windows startup scripts, I managed to use an RTX 4080 MXM on a DP 1.1/1.2 2012 laptop! No more black screens after the loading screen! So the Ampère wasn't the maximum for this laptop! With a bit of trickery on the OS, I managed to get the RTX 4080 to work on my P570WM. Brightness control = working Sleep mode = working Saving mode = working No problem on the GPU side, full TDP boost. NVIDIA recognise it has a NON HDCP display, at 1080p 120Hz at 2.7Gbps and eDP. The 3080 doesn't have brightness control once the drivers are installed because it's a DP based output and not an eDP based one. (Could find a workaround on Windows to bring back the brightness control, depending if your motherboard supports that) For laptops using DP 1.3/1.4 (2014-2019), you don't need to do any modification regarding to your OS because your eDP screen is compatible with the newer bandwidths. I need to try to use the 4080 on the P870/Dell Precision 7720 to reconfirm that. All thanks to the flex FPC cable that allows such easy modification, no more soldering required for MXM eDP laptops! The cables are available for sale. Either PayPal friendly or on eBay + a pdf guide (DM me)

Is that a Clevo variant with the power connector? It works out of the box without any flex FPC cable mod.
