  1. What a disaster! I was so tempted to wait and buy a RTX 5080/5090 laptop. But after discovering their tiny performance gain, I passed. RTX4090/RTX5090 are both limited by almost the same power limit and almost the same CUDA core count. This makes both of these machines perform almost identically in real world. The only thing that changed was MSRP. If we want a MSI TITAN 18, it will cost me $6,500 USD with taxes. 🤯MSI has lost their sanity on that one. I don’t even get it, the $4,999 price point was already so much higher than the competition, they add another $1,000 USD on top for the same performance. The whole industry is just all over the place.
  2. Yep the gaming days are over with. I still think it’s all a lie. If they can launch and sell a PS5 Pro and keep it in-stock for $699.99. Then They can definitely launch and sell a much lower demand item like the 9070XT for $699.99 and keep it in-stock 24/7/365. We are being lied to 100%. And these companies are ruining the hobby. If the whole world wants to be a PC gamer and pay $1,000+ bucks for mid range junk they can have it. The truth is, I’m gonna be a last gen man from now on. That’s what I was before. It’s the best habit to practice. I’ll get my 5090 in 2 years! I’ll get my 5090 laptop in 2 years as well. These companies are literally dumping off all stock to scalpers, and system builders. As I have said before, there will be AI ran GPU dealerships in the future with 5-6 year financing options, and they’ll cost like 10-15K lol. Gaming is taking over at a level of holy crap. Unfortunately Acer has no such update for Intel 14th gen laptops. I’ve read that they aren’t really part of the degradation but I guess only time will tell. It really has been 100% reliable so far.
  3. This 14900HX machine has been extremely reliable for gaming. No crashing at all, hours and hours and hours with consistency. I’ve got a feeling that even if I could undervolt it, I’d be running in to the “Out of vram error code” anyways lol. I tend to starve Intel chips on voltage and run them bare minimum. Anyways, the CPU is extremely fast for a laptop. Even though it’s all BGA, it’s seriously impressive how we have this in a portable package. I can’t really pick on the machine. It does the job really well. Especially after replacing the stock Liquid Metal and GPU thermal paste. I run the fans on auto and they are actually quiet. It has a turbo mode which really kicks up the GPU/CPU clocks, but it also kicks up the fan speed to cope with the extra power. This mode is not needed at all, I don’t feel the need to use it, the best part is I don’t have to use it. Auto fans run about 50-60% speed. My experience with the machine. Day 1: Meh it’s kinda cool 🫤 Day 2: I may want something else, unsure.. Day 3: I love it, I’m keeping it. 😁
  4. That’s pretty good to hear. I’m going to just keep this machine then. I mean, It runs great. The first thing I noticed when playing games on this machine was how smooth it feels no chugging or skips. The panel is very good. I like that I can run 5% brightness on battery and it’s still useable, and I can get about sub 3 hours run time unplugged. I can’t really undervolt it, but that’s fine with me. The CPU is trying to push its self to MAX clocks within its MAX temp range lol. It likes to run on the warmer end, so long as it doesn’t skip around in games I’d be okay with any laptop. I may look in to further improving its temps, by using different thermal putty. When I re-pasted it. I scraped off all of the original thermal putty, put it in a bowl, mixed in some new thermal paste to make the putty soft again, cleaned everything up with alcohol, and re-used it all 🥴. So, I’m not really sure how effective that stuff is. But I guess it’s good enough. I have lots of thermal paste, lots of Liquid Metal, but no putty.
  5. (8) fans and only 2 wires!!! I love these Lian Li P28 fans! They will match the case perfectly. Once the dual D5 distro plate arrives I can get to building.
  6. I'd rather buy that than support Nvidia right now. The way I see it is, these GPUs are going to only get better. If the 9070XT is anything like AMD's prior GPU's then the performance should only go up. The 7900XTX looks pretty amazing right now in rasterization. It seems like it has come a long way.
  7. This is a stock time spy run as a baseline for comparison. I really do not know how bad this may be. NVIDIA RTX 4090 (notebook) video card benchmark result - Intel Core i9 processor 14900HX,RPL IONIQ_RTX Even though it's a locked down BGA book like many call them these days. I still really like it. It absolutely folds my living room PC which is a LTT Golden sample 10900K/Intel ARC B580. I really need to add more storage to this thing though. The base 1TB is meh. Gaming is ultra smooth. Even if the CPU is throttling at times. I honestly really like having a laptop again. I can work in my kitchen, office, living room, wherever I want!
  8. I wonder if @Premacan unlock the bios if I paid him. That would be really cool. 😎
  9. Oh, I don't really care. I am kind of done with overclocking anyways. I am just going to use it for work. Everything sucks nowadays. Nothing much we can do.
  10. Yeah I cannot undervolt at all. I am at the mercy of the Auto voltage.
  11. XTU is locked up pretty good, I do not think I can under volt this thing at all. That is kind of unfortunate.
  12. No, I didn’t gather any data. I just watched the CPU clocks and CPU temps, CPU power. And also GPU temps, GPU boost, GPU power etc. It’s a day and night difference that’s for sure. I’m running auto fan profile, and gaming at max performance mode right now, and it’s pretty quiet. You can hear it, but it’s not super loud like before. Low fan RPM, and just boiling hot air coming out of the vents. So, the re-paste worked very well. It’s a VERY nice experience when gaming. I’ll look in to undervolting next.
  13. Feels like the old days!! Packed in a bunch of thermal putty, added some fresh Noctua NH2 on the GPU core, and redid the Liquid Metal on the 14900HX, polished with Flitz, re-applied on heatsink and die.. MUCH BETTER! I had re-assembled everything and these little tape flaps had covered the heatsink so essentially no air could Pass through the heatsink fins at all. The fans were going full blast and barely any air came out of the back or sides of the laptop. I learned my mistake after taking it apart again. My RTX 4090 mobile was throttling like crazy before even with Turbo fans on hitting 86c SUB 2,000Mhz. Now it runs 69-71c 2,400Mhz!!! 😄 The CPU dropped a good bit as well. So this is really good. It seems to be averaging 71-85c in games on all CPU cores. CPU Package before was 107c, now it’s down to 98c package max. But it’s sending way more BOOST. So it has just taken the new temp head room, and filled it with higher average CPU clocks and higher average CPU voltage, and higher CPU wattage 🥴. But it’s okay. It is running so much better. The CPU and GPU temp reduction is very substantial.
  14. Just checked my CPU temps with HWinfo in a game, and my Liquid Metal application is probably bad or not very good at all on this machine. I am not sure how shipping may affect this. But I set 100% fan speeds, reset HWinfo, and then started gaming, my CPU is still hitting 98c in KDC2. So I’m going to take this heatsink off today and check it out and hopefully get that fixed. I would have had no idea if I hadn’t checked my self.
  15. I plan to investigate my thermal paste/putty on this laptop. I know this machine has thermal putty from the factory, and Liquid Metal. So, I’m going to redo these. Under a 99% GPU load what temp does your GPU run on your laptop? Mine seems to be at a 84-86 wall playing KDC2. But man, it’s so butter smooth. Not hitching at all. But I feel like it could be better.
  16. I think it’s best to upgrade after all of the excitement wears off. Best time will be about 5-6 months before RTX 6090 series drops. That’s what I plan to do anyways. Nvidia is ridiculous though. Sad that they cannot manufacture a product at large scale at all. So essentially waiting 2 years for enough of them to appear is the only way to actually buy one at a reasonable price. But even then, they’ll still be $2,000-$2,200 dollars used on overclock.net in about 2 years. Thats a reasonable discount from the typical $2,700-$3,000 right now. The GPU market is toast though, that’s for sure. Crazy how just a high end GPU turned in to the price of a whole gaming PC or gaming laptop.
  17. Do you all think it is worth buying this extended warranty on this device? It is expiring in a few days. This was an Acer recertified device with a very short warranty. And it is expiring very soon, less than 2 weeks left. This extended warranty cost $207 dollars with a promotion through Acer. I do not typically buy extended warranties. But, with this being a costly and decent machine and all, I would love to hear input on this. Thanks everyone! Acer Predator 18” Mini LED 250hz Intel 14900HX+RTX4090 32GB DDR5/ 1TB M.2
  18. I received my 4090 laptop in the mail today. This was purchased with funds intended for an RTX 5090. However, since the RTX 5090 does not actually exist, (I’m not really near any local stores to really buy one) so I just gave up with trying to buy one online, and moved on with life. With my job, I’m finding my self having to stay at my desk 7a-7p. It’s paying well. But getting promoted to an operations manager requires me to play at a level of pure beast mode/be the best mode/no excuses allowed. 😂 So, I really needed a laptop for constant monitoring and check-in’s etc. First impressions: incredible panel! 😱 .. It’s just like OLED, maybe even better sometimes since it’s 1,000 nits bright and all.. No back light bleeding anywhere, I don’t even see any glowing at all. It’s 250Hz/ 16:10 aspect ratio, and 2560x1600/ Mini LED. So it’s really beautiful! You can run the brightness on 5% and it looks perfectly normal brightness like a regular monitor lol. CPU: 14900HX, feels very fast just using the machine. With fans silent it’s idling about 55-60c while downloading a game on Steam. With fans at 100% it’s not too bad. It’s LOUD! But the pitch and tone of the noise doesn’t make it annoying at all. It’s just noisy. But not annoying. GPU: Haven’t really gotten an opportunity to really use it just yet. But I’m expecting good things. It’s a 175w 4090 Mobile. Performance: So, I’m not expecting 4090 desktop power here obviously. But, it has DLSS3, and Frame Gen, and it’s 2560x1600! If my old 3090 Kingpin had frame Gen, I’d have never sold it! These are amazing features to have. Since Nvidia and AIB’s a like just recently killed the affordable gaming market for average people like me all together, buying a 4090 laptop seemed like the only way to go. Since even a RTX 5090 laptop MSI Raider will set you back an eye watering $5,000+ after taxes. Value: It’s a $2,000 dollar laptop. So, I think it’s going to offer a great value for what you get. A whole computer capable of decent gaming performance that is portable. Overall: This is a BIG laptop being 18 inches. I’ve never owned an 18” laptop before. The screen doesn’t feel like I’m squinting or leaning forward to find things like my last 15” laptop. And the 16:10 offers a little more desktop space to get things done. I really like the machine.
  19. The Lian Li P28’s just arrived, and these fans are super heavy. They are 120x28mm, heavy duty, very high quality! I’m impressed. The weight feels incredibly substantial like it’s a serious fan.
  20. My 4090 Gaming OC felt like a feather weight toy compared to my 4080 Super Suprim X. The 4090 gaming OC was just so light weight. While my MSI 4080S was a lead weight lol The 4080s Suprim felt like two 4090 Gaming OC’s lol.
  21. I say let em sit on the shelves for a while until nearly end of cycle lol. Then buy exactly which one you want and enjoy the cheaper upgrade cost. The lower the interest generated is probably better. Thats what I normally did. And then I had prepared my self for the 5090 launch, and it really made me dislike Nvidia for it lol. Too much stress all for a dumb GPU. So, I’m going to sit back and relax and just use what I have. The 4090 is already a brute as it is. And the RTX 50 series has been a let down with the paper launch, scalpers, missing ROPs, burning cables (Still). Since the entire world started PC gaming professionally and requires a 5090, I think Nvidia needs to first learn how to properly make a GPU and test them for full function/ full spec, and then they can learn how to make bulk supply like other companies do. The PS5 Pro launched in 11/7/2024, they are available all the time on Sony store for MSRP $699.99. This seems silly. But it’s a concept that seems legitimately impossible for Nvidia to achieve this with their own products. So it makes me think they are artificially inflating GPU prices even further. I’m not really sure. 🤷‍♂️ Anyways, I’m still sore from the whole 5090 endeavor lol.
  22. Great idea! I have a SPI programmer with a Soic 8 clip somewhere from my laptop days, I remember seeing it when we moved in to the new house. I need to dig it up wherever it is. So, I can flash the new bios and it will only update the bios, and not the firmware?
  23. Should I update my bios +6 years? Asus just released a new bios here in 2025.. 😁 NOPE!!! In all honesty, I hate that once you update you cannot go back.. It really sucks. I mean, you can revert back to an older bios. But you cannot go back to an older firmware like with newer Asus boards. I updated the Bios+FW on my other Dominus Extreme, and I regretted it. I have to say, for such an old bios it gives me no trouble with Windows 11. Part of me wants to try this new bios, but I know there's no going back once I do.
  24. I’ve decided to get a new power supply for my new build. White cables for the all white case. I’m stepping up to 1200w this time just for efficiency sake. Taking a look at the Lian Li 1200w Edge. These units are very well received apparently. The removable attached USB hub, and fan hub is awesome and very convenient. Also has a removable fan filter as well. This should make wire management easy. White Lian Li V3000+ Case White Lian Li P28 Fans (No RGB) White Lian Li Edge PSU Once the singularity dual D5 distro plate arrives, I’ll get the build finally going. The Lian Li V3000+ Plus case is just sitting in the box.
  25. @electrosoft those laptop prices are INSANE!! I feel like MSI is going too far with the $4900 dollar MSI Raider. This pushed me to just go with last gen 4090 laptop after seeing their prices on B&H Photo for the last week or so now. It’s some extreme prices for sure. If I’m spending that much I’d want a MSI TITAN. I miss the days where top end laptops were all SUB 3K. I’ve been out of the laptop world a while. I bought some fans for my build. I almost went full on RGB. lol. And I might still do it for the outer rad fans. So you can see the purdy lights gleaming through the front and top grill 🤤 🤣 Anyways, I settled on white Lian Li P28 fans. @Mr. Fox these are the quietest highest performance radiator fans. They are non RGB, and they can actually outperform the Phanteks T30, while being quieter. Noise was top priority for me! I wanted to build a completely silent PC that offers excellent cooling. I’m wanting a change, and I am having difficulty focusing at work with the chiller now that my job is getting harder and harder. Shopping for fans is really difficult. Singularity Computers has shipped my dual D5 distro. So we’ll be getting this build under way very soon. What a process this has been. Singularity is a build to order type of shop. I’m a little sad I won’t be building a 5090 in this rig. But whatever, Nvidia sucks after all. Anyways, these P28 fans link and snap together. And the snaps can even be removed. So linking together 4 fans only needs one wire for powering all fans. you can also daisy chain from 4 fans to another fan. Meaning you could hook up 4 fans on one rad, 4 fans on another rad, daisy chain them together, and run a single wire to your motherboard to power all 8 fans.
