Ray Tracing on M18xR2 - RTX 3000 MXM Upgrade!
panda_zzz replied to ssj92's topic in Alienware 18 and M18x
I know about its characteristics. but in my mind for 500$ it's not worth it for systems with mxm b. except for 7510-7520 upgrade and that if you find a video bios with lower tdp. -

Even if the slot on the laptop works in x16 mode the 4050-4070 graphics card itself is limited to 8 pcie lines -

They don't know if it's compatible or not, because they can't test it personally - they don't have such old hardware without 4g support. so they can only base it on feedback from those who bought it and tried it themselves. Usually if a laptop uses 2 video cards in sli, bus is divided into x8 + x8 for each card actually as in m18x. to have 16 lines for each slot I have not seen. -
thanks for the information. interest is just in the 15 inch model and I plan to flash 4060 in 50-60 watt mode, but all video bios with this limitation require just 4g support. when I buy this laptop I will let you know).

Well in your case 8 pci-e lines is justified, but the speed of the bus will be very small, especially since there will be data transfer from the processor to one GPU for processing and to another for displaying -

no magic - bios with support for working without 4g decoding. but 110 watts is too much for a card like mxm-a, so I tried to find something closer to 50-60 watts using the techpowerup bios database, but none of those video bios files (from laptops I guess) m17x r4 didn't want to start (apparently they require the 4g function in the system bios. The 4070 may well not have the original working video bios and you're just left with that card. Plus, it has high elements on the right side of the chip, which prevents normal cooling pressure. and 8 pcie lines are not very encouraging either. I don't really see the point in newer cards because there is a guaranteed problem with the bios and also with the quality of chinese boards, so for alienware I will probably limit myself to adlink's rtx5000 - a reasonable maximum for the processor. -
I am very interested in your claim that the g2 has support for 4g decoding. if possible, I would like to see a screenshot from gpu-z with this feature active. if everything checks out, I will buy a used g2 to test chinese 4060m on it.

it's just cheap marketing You can try, but 1x16gb modules will not work on normal 3-4 generation intel laptops due to hardware limitations of the platform.

Any proof? Plus, they don't have the mhm modules on their official website. can I get a link to confirm that the m6800 was able to boot with this memory? I think there is a difference here plus do not forget that clevo x7200 is built on a desktop chipset, which is not typical for ordinary laptops including m4800|m6800.

No they are older than the other two companies and comparing the 4060 design of zrt it is in my opinion much better.

This is a lottery game with the Chinese. if you are ready to lose the price of the card you can try, but no one will give you any guarantees even ghostly as in the case of x-vsion or zrt.

on m17x r4 4060m works well, on m4800 I didn't even try because the consumption of more than 100w is obviously too much for the latter. I tried all video bios with reduced tdp for 4060, but apparently they need 4g decoding which is not available on these laptops. maybe on 7520 the card would work like that.

16 gigabyte ddr3 modules? no they are available for laptops, but the only problem is that 3rd and 4th generation intel does not want to work with them. amd processors of the same time can easily understand them.

and it will not work, because ddr3 modules for 16gb do not work on the 4th generation intel. you need at least broadwell and that depends on the implementation of the bios of a particular laptop. so count on 16 gigabytes maximum in case of 4890hq

needed to remove 2 memory modules because 4980hq does not work with more than 2 memory modules due to the design of the adapter (there are rumors that someone saw that there are exceptions, but I have not seen any real evidence) about 4940 I do not know - I personally enough 4910 - they have no differences except for slightly higher frequencies.

If we are talking about 4980hq from aliexpress you should be prepared that it is a lottery. I personally received one non-working, one partially working with one memory channel.

I would not consider alienware laptops on the haswell platform (ranger & viking) because there are possible power limitations of video cards. so I would choose between m18x r2 (better possible CPU cooling, possible nvme in the second mxm slot, but 8 pcie lines for video card) and m17x r4 (slightly worse CPU cooling, but slightly more compact and mxm slot for 16 pcie lines).

I think 160 watts is too much

panda_zzz replied to ssj92's topic in Alienware 18 and M18x
so i'm running the latest 460 driver available for windows 7 i think or something like that. but windows 10 is having problems. Both drivers have been modified by NVCleanstall. -

then there's no point in talking about 48 gigabytes it's a CPU+chipset problem. and actually 32 gigabytes is still enough -

If you have 6 slots soldered into your laptop, it could be 48, but I think you said 3. -

even taking into account that your laptop has a desktop chipset it doesn't change much - the same 8 gigabytes per channel, in case of three-channel mode - 24 gigabytes maximum. https://www.intel.com/content/www/us/en/products/sku/47932/intel-core-i7980x-processor-extreme-edition-12m-cache-3-33-ghz-6-40-gts-intel-qpi/specifications.html if you want you can experiment, but as for me it's a waste of money and bios will not be able to cope with 16 gigabyte modules, just like later bios for 3rd and 4th generation.
