1 USB device to control minimum 32 machines?
saturnotaku replied to Reciever's topic in Desktop Hardware
Doing it over a network or with software like Synergy would probably be the best way, but it doesn't sound like this would be possible. -
Jarrod sold out to the almighty sponsorship dollar with this wet fart of a video.

They're finally adding a high-refresh display to the X1 Extreme. It looks to be the exact same 2560x1600 165 Hz panel from the Legion 7 and 5 Pro. Hopefully it will be G-Sync compatible as well. Also pleased to see that apparently all models will now have two M.2 storage slots, which is something that was missing from ones that had RTX 3060 and higher GPUs. If I hadn't managed to snag a clearance Razer Blade 15, I would be all over this.

Did you ever try putting the laptop to sleep? This was another annoying thing with my M16 - it would take forever to go to sleep. The Blade goes down in less than 10 seconds.

Jarrod's gaming test of the new G14 with the RX 6800S is up. It's definitely a step up from last year's model, but there are a few instances where performance isn't that much better than the RX 6600M. At least FSR really helps.
-
The more I used it, the more little annoying things took their toll. The least was some weirdness with Armoury Crate. For seemingly no reason, the OSD showing what performance mode the laptop was in would flash at random. It happened at least three times during the course of my ownership, and no amount of updates fixed it. I wish there was a way to turn that off completely. Moving up the annoyance ladder were idle temps when connected to my external monitor. There was no way to get the laptop to stay below 60C without having to leave it in turbo mode with a manual fan curve. The problem there was that I couldn't get the fan hysteresis to work in a smooth way. The straw that ultimately broke the camel's back was the port layout. I have a Razer Barracuda X headset, which uses a USB-C dongle as a receiver. When connecting it to the laptop, it would block the other Type-C port, prohibiting its use. Also, because the USB-A port is right next to them, an adapter was impractical. This is going to sound insane, but I picked up a Blade 15 today. MicroCenter put the Advanced model with i7 11800H, RTX 3060, 1440p/240 Hz QHD G-Sync screen, and 1 TB SSD on clearance for $1599. There was a problem as soon as I took it out of the box in that it wouldn't sit flat on any surface. I seem to have fixed it by removing and reseating the bottom panel. This was a nerve-racking prospect as with previous Blade laptops, I would always strip at least one screw, but thankfully that didn't happen. One part that was particularly appealing was the fact that it was running Windows 10 out of the box. NIB laptops that still use it are getting increasingly rare outside the workstation-class.

Apparently the RX 6XXXS series of laptop GPUs is not what it appears to be. Instead of being just low-powered versions of their similarly named counterparts, the 6700S will have less performance than the 6600M and the 6800S will be below the 6700M. The Blade 14 has been updated with Ryzen 6000 APUs and a rather stiff price increase. The range runs 3060, 3070 Ti, and 3080 Ti with pricing of $1999, $2599, and $3499, respectively. Screens remain the same at 1080p for the 3060 and 1440p for the rest. While it one-ups the Asus G14 with an HDMI 2.1 port, neither laptop makes use of full-speed USB 4.0. Pre-orders are open now with shipping set for March 17. Razer Blade 14 2022 product information

With the embargo on Ryzen 6000 mobile APUs having lifted today, figured now is a good time to start a discussion on what will probably be the hottest laptop of the year. Below are links to the models that are available at Best Buy. Each has the Rzyen 9 6900HS and 1440p screen. No USB 4.0 or HDMI 2.1, though. Ryzen 9 | RX 6700S | 16 GB RAM | 1 TB SSD | $1649.99 Ryzen 9 | RX 6800S | 16 GB RAM | 1 TB SSD | $1899.99 Here's Linus' overview of the APU. The review of the actual laptop is slated for next week.

The latest patch now has a built-in benchmark along with support for AMD FSR.

Keep an eye on Lenovo outlet if you are looking for L5 Pro or L7 Gen 6
saturnotaku replied to jlp0209's topic in Lenovo
They must have had a very limited number available as both version you reference show as out of stock. I'm done with Lenovo for the foreseeable future. Thin and light is the way of the future for me and so far I'm digging the Alder Lake Asus M16. -
2Tb aftermarket SSD for Precision 7560
saturnotaku replied to katalin_2003's topic in Pro Max & Precision Mobile Workstation
The 980 Pro is a terrific SSD, more so when I paid less than $200 for a 2 TB one thanks to sale prices, gift cards, and rewards points from Best Buy. I originally had it in my ThinkPad but ended up returning that laptop so it's pulling duty as the boot drive for my desktop. While the 9th-gen Core i7 doesn't support PCI-E Gen 4, once I upgrade to Alder Lake or Ryzen 7000, that won't be an issue. I'll be repurposing my Samsung 970 Evo for laptop duty eventually. I'm currently evaluating the 2022 Asus Zephyrus M16 as a portable gaming/work solution. So far it's decent, but thankfully due to having Best Buy Elite Plus status, I have 45 days to make up my mind. -
Everyone, its time to decide our brand!

As the bulk of the content here is meant to be a successor to NBR, I went with NotebookTalk.com. Revival is a nice idea, but the word has a connotation of being temporary. We're in a revival stage as of now, but once the community gets more established, I think it would sound weird to continue using that term. I don't think the name as it stands right now will play nicely with SEO. A lot of laptop-related searches directed to NBR. Someone who might not know better would think the site might be a scam if they see that it's just a bunch of letters. Further, I don't think the name should adopt a more generic PC hardware focus. The specialized nature of NBR is what really made it work and I think kept the community easy to manage. We start appealing to more PCMR types, and I think this place could devolve like nVNews.net did in its dying days. We can certainly keep a dedicated desktop hardware sub-forum, but that should be the extent of it. -
Suspect I spoke a bit too soon about the goodness of the P1. For some reason, the mouse cursor would randomly develop a slight but noticeable lag when using the touchpad or trackpoint. What's weird is that it would go away and come back seemingly at random. It was enough to throw me off my productivity game. I spent the better part of two days troubleshooting with no success so I filed the return with fleBay on the last day it was available to me. In their infinite wisdome, fleBay's pre-paid return label was for USPS priority mail. My local PO refused to accept the package because of the lithium ion battery. When I attempted to explain that laptops are shipped next-/second-day air with UPS and FedEx all the time, they were having none of it. So I ended up paying UPS out of pocket to ship it back, and I'll be going after fleBay for a refund of that cost. In the meanwhile, I've decided to give Asus another chance and ordered the 2022 Zephryus M16 when it went on sale at Best Buy the other day. I went with the 3060, which at $1649 is $200 cheaper than the outgoing 11th-gen one when comparing their MSRPs. I didn't feel like spending an additional $500 on the 3070 Ti model despite the GPU, CPU, and screen upgrades. I'm probably going to use that money to upgrade my desktop to Alder Lake.

The like button is hidden on the far right side of the bar that has the quote button. Mouse over it, and the reactions should pop up.

Pretty much, though I did pay less than $2300 for mine, which I think was a good price given the hardware inside, build quality, and overall design that's much more portable than the Legion. I think the P1 could have been just about perfect if they would have seen fit to include the 500-nit 165 Hz panel from the L7 because I very much miss having a high-refresh display. I know it's not meant to be a gaming machine, but it seems rather senseless to have a 1440p/60 screen just for these laptops - economies of scale and all that. Plus, Lenovo would have the extra marketing blurb of it being a 500-nit screen instead of the 400 nits of the 60 Hz option.
-
While I don't regret purchasing my P1 Gen 4, I wish I would have known about this laptop before getting it.

The touchscreen on my 10.5-inch iPad Pro is starting to act up. This is a rather common problem, and Apple wants $450 to fix it. I grabbed an iPad Gen 9 from Costco instead. The screen is a downgrade, but it will still work just fine as a casual content consumption/gaming device. The Pro will be handed down to my kid so they can use it for video chats and such.

What phone are you daily driving currently?
saturnotaku replied to Katja's topic in Mobile Devices & Gadgets
iPhone 13 Mini. It's going to be a shame when Apple discontinues the Mini lineup as I think it's the best non-Pro model available. -
What have you upgraded on your current laptop(s)?
saturnotaku replied to Sandy Bridge's topic in Components & Upgrades
I swapped out the stock 2x8 GB 1Rx16 RAM and 512 GB PCI-E Gen 4 SSD in my ThinkPad P1 Gen 4 for 2x16 GB 1Rx8 RAM and a 2 TB Samsung 980 Pro, respectively. -
I generally agree that 4K on a laptop screen doesn't make much sense. However, even on a 27-inch external monitor, the increase in sharpness is quite nice for productivity and content consumption. Further, by using integer scaling, you can run games at 1080p and they will look native while allowing you to get the best performance possible.

I traded my 2020 Acura ILX last year because it made 5 unscheduled service trips to the dealer in 11 months. My wife wanted a second SUV anyway so I got a 2020 GMC Terrain that I think the dealer wanted rid of because I got over $7500 off MSRP. It has a heated steering wheel, and now I will never buy another vehicle without one.

The IdeaPad 5 Pro in my signature, which is primarily my wife's, came with Windows 11 pre-installed. I've also bought and returned a few laptops that came with it as well. There are still plenty of bugs to be worked out with it, and I really don't like how they've messed with the settings sub-system. For what my wife does, it's fine, but needless to say I was very happy my ThinkPad P1 Gen 4 came with Windows 10 Pro. Speaking of, this was probably the most bloat-free OEM Windows install I've ever seen - no McAfee, not even the stupid pre-installed games that Microsoft likes to put on (eg Candy Crush, etc). The only extra software was the commercial edition of Lenovo Vantage, which allows you to set a specific maximum battery charge instead of the fixed 55-60 percent that you're limited to with the Legion line of laptops.
