Your Gtx 970 trips overcurrent protection, do you have photo of MXM board maybe ? Or it may be just wrong vBios. I used 980 with 100w TDP for a long time in 8570w, MSI vBIOS.

HP Elitebook 8570W - is it still good ? Hardware modifications
GuitarG replied to GuitarG's topic in Custom Builds
After more than five years with me, it was his time to go to notebook heaven. RIP, sweet prince. I have spare mobo, but I won't use RTX this time, I will go back to P5000. I will do cable mod and BIOS thing, even one more DIY heatsink work. So everyone else could go my way and make his laptop better. Thank you loopster, and everyone, for support. Someday I will mod some RTX GPU, again..- 218 replies

With delided CPU and Honeywell PTM it is very nice ! I use it for almost month and it is going strong! Quadro P5000 110W in this moment, I sometimes use FN+1 Turbo fan profile, but that happened in few very CPU heavy scenarios. I plan to use RTX 5000 from HP here. Teaching old dog new tricks is cool, now it boots from NVME, too 🙂

BIOS with most interesting options unlocked, flash and use on your own responsibility. Works on P750ZM/P751ZM. Should work on P770ZM too, but there will be bad motherboard name in bios. I have also inserted NVMe driver for booting https://drive.google.com/file/d/16dmPgyPI9r_iNOEKTia0ThhHDYrvZygf/view?usp=sharing If I will have some more free time, I would mod my Quadro GPU ID so I would not need to use NVClean. And add updated Xeon 1285L v4 microcode.

HP Elitebook 8570W - is it still good ? Hardware modifications
GuitarG replied to GuitarG's topic in Custom Builds
(In professor's voice from Futurama) Bad news everyone, my 8570W lately started to malfunction. Motherboard needs to be repaired, I checked CPU and RTX GPU separately, and they are okay, but in my modded 8570w I'm getting black screen freezes when CPU uses more power. Swapping in weak CPU works, but that is not point. So hold your fingers crossed for me making my PC alive again, thanks.- 218 replies

How do you screw this 3080 to Clevo motherboard ? Aren't those holes offset or I missed something ? If someone could upload some photos of that mod it would be great ! EDIT: Ok, after little research I found answer, TM1 have offset mounts for both GTX and RTX cards. Still, I want to use it in older ZM EDIT2: All clear, no way installing RTX card in ZM. No place for board because of chassis structure. Unfortunatelly.

It could be very simple repair, like one damaged transistor, bios flash. Or more complicated stuff like damaged PCH or KBC. Only board level repair specialist can help, there is too much possibilites without having damaged board on table. Mine I bought very cheap, 30$ without PSU (I had one already), changed PCH myself (10$), one transistor (less than 1$) and it works. And I don't think PCH was damaged, but you can't be sure it's not damaged until you change it. Seller also took out his 4790K and 980M, sold those separately.

Do you mean CPU and GPU works in different laptop ? Do your P751zm have LED blinking codes ? Fans runs 100% ?

Xeon E3 1285L V4 (i7 5775C equivalent) working ! I tossed a coin and I'm ordering RTX 3080 GPU =] I will show pictures later and I will share unlocked BIOS file.

Buying a shorted mxm GPU : worth the risk ?
GuitarG replied to JadeRover's topic in Components & Upgrades
Sure, I do! I made custom CAD heatsink already, but I have big design choices right now. I am deciding if I would want to use vapor chamber in my 8570w. I'm looking for other RTX GPU for my P750ZM, too 😄- 4 replies

Buying a shorted mxm GPU : worth the risk ?
GuitarG replied to JadeRover's topic in Components & Upgrades
It is exactly like you think! I think price is okay, you will end learning few things on way. I bought GTX980 with visibly overheated PCB where damaged mosfet was, it also was shorted and turned overcurrent protection on PSU. I regret not taking second one - guy sold 2 of them. I got it for 10 $. I also added 3 more mosfet and caps, so it would not be damaged in same way. It is always a gamble, sometimes core, vram or buck converter may be damaged. Remember to trust your logic more than multimeter - Quadro P5200 I bought had whooping 0,1 ohm resistance on VCORE ! It worked no problem for years and now somebody else uses it (reference- working silicon I tested always had at least 2 ohms when tested). From GPU die point of view there is no difference if it was 12V or 20V - any overvoltage is going to kill it succesfully. So don't count on common sense in electronics repair 🙂- 4 replies

Xeons work no problem at all, right now I'm using E3-1241 v3, I am waiting for xeon e3 1285l v4 with eDRAM. That is 5th gen Broadwell CPU. With unlocked BIOS I can check if that L4 cache works. Similar to xeon is i7 5775c (difference being unlocked multiplier). I am very curious how it will behave together with my Quadro RTX 5000 from HP, 2133mhz RAM and every "hack" available (like REBAR, above 4G decoding, undervolt, etc.). Most importanly, I would allow me to check if recent GPUs would work in dGPU only notebook. If not, then I would look for way to make it work 🙂

Okay, I made it myself anyway, (like classic says - "I will go hack my own BIOS with blackjack and hookers!") here is why I wanted: Boots, works. I can undervolt CPU from BIOS, set fan thermal behavior, overclock RAM (make it use XMP). Now I also need to clean up some options (not needed). Even made custom boot splash with my cat for fun. Time to buy Ampere RTX I guess ? Or maybe Intel dGPU ?

Hi Clevo people ! I have acquired Clevo P751ZM recently (1 means EU version, 0 is for rest of world - minor difference in grill looks), repaired it and now it's rockin' nice Xeon CPU together with P5000 Quadro. I had found clevo repository with newest factory BIOS, but I'm looking for modded one. Can anybody help me with file ? 🙂 I think P770ZM is also compatible. And if someone would have keyboard for sale would be awesome, too! Thanks!

Where are you from ? I may try to help you both with capacitor and cpu pin. About 4xxx series not needing 4G, where from you got info ? Did anyone already succeed with 3xxx series ? Previously I thought for those to work it needs only correct vBIOS, but I saw many post with people trying make it work, but always they had some kinds of driver errors, etc. I myself do not tried it. In my opinion, for above Turing cards to work with our motherboards we need few things, firstly correct settings in UEFI, correct INF file moded, at least Ivy Bridge chipsets, appropriate hardware signals needed for card to POST.. and my bet is to use dGPU only laptops. Every laptop OEM have very different approach to how internal screen works with both iGPU and dGPU. And it also depends how oem had written motherboard software, which may be another obstacle. I looked at PC game benchmarks, 3770k with rtx 4080 for example, downloaded bios update file, checked it with UefiTool, voila! Firmware from 2014 have 4G Decoding option.

HP Elitebook 8570W - is it still good ? Hardware modifications
GuitarG replied to GuitarG's topic in Custom Builds
Adapter for faster debuging on spare 8570w, I will make same later for main one. I plan to make mini board with dual bios, one coreboot and second will be original hp one. I can test much faster now. Right now I can boot linux, but I have no visible BIOS and fans don't work on my compiled coreboot. BTW, did you know different flash IC's loads time is varies? You can tell by how long it takes from power button to visible BIOS logo. Macronix is x2 faster than original winbond on my main notebook 🙂 On left main one vs test on right. Both with latest updated firmware. Coreboot is even faster (but I don't have video for now) D2P0Obbj.mp4- 218 replies

What phone are you daily driving currently?
GuitarG replied to Katja's topic in Mobile Devices & Gadgets
2 years ago I had QWERTY Titan Unihertz, it was awesome. I miss physical buttons on modern phones, I remember how fun was to text with friends using slide out htc desire z or motorola droid. Now I use Samsung, S23, because it is smallest phone I could find. Maybe one day I will make case for it with sliding out keyboard.. ? 😄 Like in Departed movie - "I don't want to be a product of my environment. I want my environment to be a product of me." -

Here you go: https://www.phoronix.com/news/Coreboot-Resizable-BAR EDIT: Haswell may have problem with Coreboot because thanks to Intel (TM) Boot Guard. Your mileage may vary. I had already tested this alternative BIOS simplifed version, and it works! Now I need to compile updated version with corrected bugs and graphical interface. Never though I would be making my own bios hahaha!- 218 replies

Can I get an MXM card newer than GTX1070? if so where?
GuitarG replied to cdoublejj's topic in Components & Upgrades
For 3000 and 4000 series you need "Above 4G decoding" option in BIOS rom to work. Turing aka Quadro RTX and 2000 series is max you can upgrade, for now. -
HP Elitebook 8570W - is it still good ? Hardware modifications
GuitarG replied to GuitarG's topic in Custom Builds
You sure 8570w can't support rtx 2070 ? I would surely check it out myself 🙂 If you think about that power connector, it is just another 20V connector for additional TDP. Definitely ptm7950. Liquid metal you have to repaste often compared to thermal pad ptm, it is just a bit better in lowering degrees, very dangerous to motherboard, destroys silicon die AND heatsink (chemistry reaction). Totally not worth it. With ptm you can even dissasemble laptop for some test, just wait for it to be in solid state, screw again - works like nothing happened. You can't beat that. In my case, upgraded 8570w, PTM is ONLY solution that last more than 1 week. On CPU every other silicon grease is pumped out in one week, on GPU it's 1 month. Sad to hear you were scammed. I hate both big companies and greedy people. Do you think it may be problem with DC board or DC screen ? I used gtx980, m5000m equivalent, never had problem with 10 bit mode, banding. Only high pitched PWM coil whine from LCD. I have my old spare from 8570W or I could find more from Zbook. Where you from ? Have you modded heatsink yet ? I guess you have factory heatsink, so CPU and GPU may overheat, unfortunatelly with them. Mod it and 3940XM will be not a problem 😄 And lastly, thanks for reading my posts! It makes me happy to share ^ _ ^ I have little suprise... I found out I may success in flashing Coreboot - it's name for open source bios. Why is that ? Because it MAY allow me to use 4G Decoding and ReBar in 8570W! 😄 Can you imagine it ? If I will succeed with porting that laptop to Coreboot it will be not only unlocked in every way imaginable but also even faster. That's theory. Another idea is that to overclock 2133mhz or buy 2400mhz DDR3 PC RAM, use spare SO-DIMM boards and solder memory IC's. Native 2400Mhz RAM on laptop ? Hell yeah. I had won P5000M for 100$, so I will mod spare 8570W.. with original cable 😄 !11oneone It will be my reference for main RTX's HP. I will bake heatsink in separated version to test vs mine and vs clevo's 100W gtx.- 218 replies
