I’m actually highly considering grabbing a RTX4090 on launch day to go with my 13900KF. I’d probably grab the cheapest one I can get my hands on. I’m selling a few things to hopefully grab one. I feel like stock will be good. And the performance improvements are really awesome.

I play 2560x1440P how overkill a 4090 actually is.

If I can sell my 3090 Kingpin Hydro Copper 24GB for around $1,000, I’ll grab one.

Do you have any particular models in mind? My two favorite models are the 4090FE and the MSI Suprim Hybrid still. Colorful would carry no warranty over here for their Neptune which will probably be priced out of the stratosphere anyhow.

I decided to cancel the 13900K pre-order. Not because I do not want it, but because I don't want to spend any money on it. Will see what the KS brings and the price of it

yeah man, take it easy, let us other folks have a jab at brand spanking new hardware first, then u can smash us down later again 😄

And, at the rate things are going tits up with Brandon and his insane clown posse I need to spend less, save more, or plan on not  retiring until age 80 or 90, or maybe never. If that situation changes, then I can reevaluate

Exactly my thoughts. I'm going to sit back and wait.

I'll just have to suck it up eventually before November 28th when WoW Dragonflight launches and break down my system and install the EVGA Z690 Classified vs pick up a 13900k and run both in tandem for awhile.

X3D and KS are coming sooner than later in 2023.

looking around the forum and other places its fascinating to see how many enthusiasts are sitting out this gen. just goes to show that its an advantage to go anti-cyclic with purchasing hardware. now that the market is SO over saturated and everyone and their dog bought new hardware or system during the pandemic, theres more hope for my kind to be actually able and get new hardware at MSRP on launch day 😄

so far its been going pretty nicely, got both a 7950X and an Asus ROG Crossfire X670E Extreme at or below MSRP on launch day. today ill be sniping a pixel 7 pro, currently eyeing the Made by Google live stream and checking google store for when purchases go live 😛

That Asus 4090 Strix is a chonker!

Leaked 4080 16GB synthetics....it is a decent card (~23% uplift in TSE, ~16% uplift in RT vs 3090ti) in its own right. This means the 4090 should just be an absolute monster and with the massive cuda separation between the 4090 and 4090ti this time around the 4090ti is going to be a behemoth!

I'm sure many chassis manufacturers is very happy now. Same also for the GPU Riser Express Cable  manufacturers. And I expect Nvidia know about the problem and hence didn't go bananas and made the FE cards longer than what they already are. People want smaller chassis. Now they don't need turn on the electric oven in the winters. Pair this with the new 95C normal from AMD and coming 350W processors from Intel. Bigger is better. I know. Hence I went with 1000D 🙂 And not because next gen graphics cards will be bigger than ever. I just like it big. Big is better. And all "Black"

The change in size, power connectors, PCIe5 and more is the gift that keeps on giving to vendors across many facets. New cases, new motherboards, new PSUs to support that new hardware oh my!  🤑

All we would need now is a, "Runs Best on Windows 11" campaign to fully bring it home! 🙂

boy am i glad i went for the Phanteks Enthoo Pro 2, which is a behemoth all by itself. no worries about any size of GPU size in the future 🙂

and youve got my attention with that linked article... in the meantime ive read that Nvidia and board partners initially planned for a 600+W TDP before downswitching to 450W shortly before launch. however, this was too late for board partners to change anything about their coolers, thats why we ended up with such monsters.

curious to see: will later AIB cards have smaller coolers that are adjusted to 450W only? in any case, this is good news for us, means supercool cards that can be oced to kingdom come! 3 GHz on air or water would be sweeeeeeeeet!

One of the reasons I am taking a back seat for a while.  It is starting to feel like we have all become victims of a scam in an organized crime ring, LOL. Too many strings attached and smacks of collusion and conspiracy driven by greed more than being born out of necessity.

One of the reasons I do not plan on upgrading GPUs any time soon is I am not willing to give up Windows 7 yet, and the absence of driver support means I would have to do that whether I want to or not. It is unknown what challenges I would face, if any, moving to a 13th Gen and supporting BIOS. It might not take any effort and be a seamless drop-in CPU change, but it may turn into a cluster. I'm not ready to allow myself to be manipulated. It goes against my nature to allow it, and my natural inclination is to hang on as long as I can for no reason other than defiance and denying them the luxury of making decisions for me. Nasty finger salute to that. I am not willing to stop using an OS that I don't want to stop using as a condition of installing a more powerful CPU or GPU. Double salute to that.

I can move to Linux if I am ready to totally abandon benching (almost there). Software selection is the one and only reason I still use Windows versus Linux. Linux is a better product, but the software selection sucks. I am not willing to embrace Windows 11 and still begrudingly use Windows 10 for my daily driver. Neither of them are acceptable to me in their natural, unmitigated and utterly disgusting, state. Both require extensive aesthetic modifications for me to view them as palatable. Fixing those atrocities doesn't correct the performance degradation that comes along with Windows 10 and worsens with Windows 11. I don't think they will ever be something I view as good or desirable operating systems. Windows 7 set the bar higher than the Redmond Retards are capable of jumping in their current compromised and degenerate physical and mental state. With Windows 10 they were circling the drain, and Windows 11 took them down the drain, into the septic tank.

I've been dumping as much old hardware sitting around that I can at this point. Unfortunately this market is tough to move old stuff unless I want to sell at terrible losses vs what I paid. Right now it's looking like almost all 4090 are 16x pin, and unless Nvidia pulls some 20 series BS and separate the the dies with "A chips and Non-A chips" then we should be able to cross flash and catch similar performance even on the cheaper models. I'm planning on grabbing the MSI Suprim X or Strix, but that Strix card is just so damn ugly this time.

Oddly enough, the Team Group Delta memory kit that I just sold was purchased from someone in China. I got full asking price. For the first time ever, I shipped a  product to China rather than having a product from China shipped to me. It was weird. Nobody from the US made an offer and it was underpriced.

But yeah, I've sold quite a few things on eBay over the past year to help bankroll new parts and it feels like many a buyer expects to pay a tiny fraction of what anything is worth. Some of the ludicrous low-ball offers I have received made me want to reply with something like "LOL, what is wrong with you? Are you really that stupid, or do you think I am?

I think the historically horrible Orwellian economy we live in now has people scared to spend money, and they are too worried about losing what they have worked for decades to save as they watch it evaporate. At the same time, the cost of basic life necessities continue to rise at an alarming and demoralizing pace. Watching cities like Portland, Seattle, San Francisco, Chicago and New York morphing into third-world slums also doesn't do much to bolster confidence. It is crazy and scary how little time it has taken for bad people to turn things upside down and inside-out.

It looks like Arc 770 is going to be a real challenger in mid-range for NVIDIA and AMD. As drivers mature it is probably going to slaughter the competition. Nice to see that. I hope that can do something similar with high end at some point. I think this is a really good start for them.

The Good

The Bad

I really love the minimalist aesthetic of the Arc GPUs. I think they are the nicest-looking air cooled GPUs I have ever seen before. Very elegant looking IMHO. But, the teardown video shows a real nightmare for maintenance. Maybe the next gen can take a new approach. The backplate design is especially psychotic.

LOL ...that is spelled the same forward as it is backward.

LOL ...that is spelled the same forward as it is backward.

im going the classical approach for Arc: hope for the best but expecting the worst. i fear this might be a "one hit wonder", so to say, with basically only one low powered sku for laptops when Battlemage comes...

congratz on your first sell to China! 😄 and i know EXACTLY what u mean, those idiot lowballers on fleabay are sometimes completely bonkers with their expectations...

btw guys, I just got in my X670E Asus motherboard, holy guacamole! 6.1 kg / 13.5 pound package!!!! WTH 😂 but damn is this a sweet looking thing....so many accessories, cables, add in cards, etc, not even sure yet what to do with all of it hahaha. but guys, this thing is built like a TANK!

the rest of the components should all be arriving beginning of next week, which means: BUILD TIME! woooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo

I'm excited for you and I look forward to seeing your build.

I can remember when I went back to desktops and how I became disenchanted with laptops almost instantly. The disenchantment soon turned to loathing.

Even though high-end enthusiast desktop parts are expensive, the quality they deliver produces a sense of satisfaction that far exceeds anything a mobile computing experience can offer. That level of excellence simply doesn't exist anywhere in laptop land. Everything is chintzy and pathetic in comparison.

I think everyone needing a GPU, needs to buy the Intel ARC750/770 GPU. Fortunately Linus also made a video titled. “Buy Intel GPU’s” I imagine his 15 million subscriber base should help drastically with Intel’s support. Intel will eventually get there in 2-3 years, and could easily knock down Nvidia for far less money.

I’m tempted to grab a 4090 on launch, but I don’t have any bites on my 3090 Kingpin Hydro Copper for just $975 dollars. That kind of price is really only like $900 bucks before tax if you really think about it. It’s also only 12% slower then a RTX4080 (16)GB in Timespy extreme, only with more VRAM. Selling old hardware is very very tough!

If you sell it on eBay you'll get raped on fees, too. If you need to sell it to help fund the 4090 that's one thing. If there were an opportunity to keep it and use it in a second computer, you wouldn't have to take a massive loss on the sale. But, you also wouldn't have any cash to contribute to the upgrade. I am very glad I kept my 2080 Ti FTW3 instead of selling it for that very reason. I am benefitting more by hanging onto it that I would have had I sold it to help offset the cost of the 3090 KPE. I almost did and I am so glad I decided not to.

I would jump on an Arc A770 GPU right now, but it can't really replace my 2080 Ti FTW3. So, it would be a stupid move for me to buy one. It would be a decent low-cost upgrade to a 3060 though. I think it is nice to see NVIDIA and AMD getting caught with their pants down on mid-range GPUs. It thrills me to see Intel acting as the disrupter in this space and I do hope the next generation brings similar disruption to the high-end gamer and overclocking enthusiast realm. Imagine an Intel GPU with all of the stupid performance metering limitations removed along with the features the A770 employed to overtake NVIDIA and AMD in the mid-range space. It is remarkable that Intel has such strong ray tracing performance at their first entry into the market with immature drivers. This has potential to become extremely disruptive and that is awesome.

LOL... that would be a good reason for it for sure.

In order to make that happen, we would need a water block for it, more robust overclocking software tools and a way to mod the vBIOS to remove power limits or a shunt mod. But, I certainly wouldn't mind taking a crack at it once all of those ducks are in a row. Would be kind of a waste of time without them.

The Z790 Dark will have a 14 layer PCB, compared to the 10 layer PCB from the Z590/Z690 Dark. I’m kind of wondering how this will change memory overclocking.

Hard to know what the reason for it is or what benefit, if any, it will provide. It could be for something other than memory, or it may even be an unnecessary sales gimmick. Kind of like what Buildzoid talks about with grossly overkill VRM phases on modern motherboards that the OEMs build to try to make their products seem better than others, whether they are or not.  Z790 as a chipset is basically Z690, but with an additional 4 PCIe lanes upgraded to PCIe 4.0 speeds. It will not provide anything useful over a Z690 chipset for most of us. They needed something new to sell to people that buy new because new is new.

Pure speculation at this point, but there could be changes to motherboard design that improve DDR5 overclocking that are not related to the chipset as much as the passing of time and increased ODM knowledge and learning how to better support higher DDR5 clock speeds and performance.

Zen4 sales confirmed less than stellar.... again, hopefully a forebear of thing to come for other segments and a return at least a bit from pricing insanity.

Anyone ever try one of these motherboards? I love the build and design of it.

ASRock Aqua OC Z690

12 Layer PCB

(2) Dimm design

Very good memory overclocking ability. Unfortunately these are $800 USD is the cheapest I’ve found.

It is unfortunate they are so expensive. I want one!!!!! 😭😭😭
