I have nothing against Crocs or the people that love them. But, I don't want a PC case that looks like a shoe. Or, for that matter, that looks like anything else other than a PC case. I'm not a fan of gimmicks like that. They usually embrace compromise and omit functionality as a trade-off for weird aesthetics. Even when the aesthetic is pleasing, you're giving up something else related to functionality, performance, or both.

Being a small SI has its perks and some downsides. It is all on how you mitigate those downsides. You don't get a lot of "problems" with small to medium size businesses, only when you deal with the public consumer markets. You should pursue it and just find a piece or rather a specialization.

I have been debating it to some degree but of my experience of late is around sccm/mdt deployments and such. I think I have hit the ceiling at my current employment but I do have too much hardware at home for my own uses its really a waste to let it be.

Me and Hiew debated it several times since we essentially do it already for all our friends and family and do have a genuine interest in the space.

Then we needed a forum lol, so that took front seat and then work ramped up for both of us pretty significantly.

Doing something with tech for money like what is shown in both of these videos would probably be a smart thing to do in this difficult economic environment. The vast majority of consumers prefer having something adequate that doesn't cost any more than necessary. It might be difficult to get it in motion as a business, but once you did and got established in it, I think it would have potential to be lucrative.

The one and only local mom and pop shop here in town just closed its doors for good. They stayed in business all these years despite the likes of Newegg, or Amazon. The only reason they shut down, was because the kids had no interest in taking it over. Mark, the owner, I have known for years,  started out selling atari 2600 consoles and games way back when. I think there is a market for Custom PC builders, but the economy right now would make me Leary of starting something up.

Woah..now that's a deal he picked up the whole 1070 system for under 500. Impressive. I think 1070 level gpu is perfect for 1080p. You won't need much more at 1080p

Thats where a lot of my systems come from right now, out of warranty decom.

I am currently sitting on:

5820 Precision w/ i7 9800x

4x 7810 with 2x 2650v3 (20c/40t) (some of which have 128GB RAM)
3x optiplex 7060 i7's
optiplex 7070 w/ i5
6x HP t630's
Probably over a TB of ram

One of the other reasons I was a bit disillusioned was due to super low bids I kept getting. I used to sell Optiplex 7040 micros for 100 and people would still shoot me offers of 40 lol. I was thinking of building my own SCCM/MDT server to make the process of clean slating PC's more automated.

Yes. There is definitely a market for that kind of thing. That guy (in the first link) has a very funny dry sense of humor. I really like his dry corny humor.

That is why I think it would be challenging to become established in that niche, but I think once you do it could be very lucrative. The second link (LTT video) shows examples of those who have.

I put links to both videos because the first one does not allow embedding their YT videos, so I made both just links so nobody would skip the first link thinking it was the same video as the second link.

Thank you.

The LTT video shows examples of three companies in Toronto that are repurposing old tech by jazzing it up with some bling that the kiddos tend to love, and reselling the used stuff still super-cheap compared to the new stuff. Really good solution for financially challenged people (and parents of younger kids) that need a cheap computer that will still do most things well enough if your bar isn't set too high. I would do it for that purpose, nothing to do with e-waste mitigation.

It is getting harder to rationalize spending between $1300 and $2000 more than the price of an A770. If the percentage of performance uplift loosely matched the percentage of price increase it would be fairly easy to justify.

I agree with the last comment... definitely "ewww" for me, too. No thanks.

You and I have long known that diminishing returns is the name of the game for top end hardware but still went for it anyhow. The problem now is the top end hardware is insanely expensive and there is a clear and present danger of AMD and Nvidia trying to shift up the MSRP on the lower tiers.

Even motherboard prices have exploded in the last 3-4 years in the mid tier range along with top end prices going through the roof. With so many motherboard makers I do wish everything would shift back down at least a bit. I remember thinking $500 was outlandish for a motherboard but clearly I was conservative in my estimations a few years back as prices have continued to track up and even now EVGA's top end boards are $800. With so many makers and variety all centered around the same chipset though you get some breathing room. Whether it is a $250 or $1000 board, it is still using Z790/X670E and many boards overclock just as well or close enough to the top end that outside of exotic cooling, it will be your chip that reaches its limits not the motherboard (See Gigabyte $250-300 X670E / MSI Z790 Pro boards which rock for OC).

GPUs? Unfortunately Nvidia simply controls the narrative and even AIBs are in a bind pricing and custom design wise there is only so much they can do because Nvidia is a control freak. Toss in insane pricing and here we are.

The biggest disappointment to me still is AMD. Always the perpetual underdog and pricing king keeping Intel and Nvidia somewhat honest. The first moment they bring to market real competitive products they promptly mark their pricing upwards too both CPU and GPU to try to extract maximum value versus lower profit margins and go for real marketshare gains. They then basically stretch the truth in their marketing too on top of it. I guess they figure if Nvidia and Intel can do it why can't they?

It's amazing to think we're quickly approaching the one year anniversary of these forums. I am so glad and thankful they exist and work so well and took up the mantle of the old NBR forums quite nicely. It is still a pleasant surprise when you see old NBR members discover these forums and announce their arrival.

We still have a few mom and pop shops holding on. Our biggest one tried to branch off into business sales and support and sacrificed their "mom and pop" audience and closed up shop a few years ago. Problem is I've found personally is that by the time a customer/client gets to me it is out of general disgust from having tried to get their PC fixed by Best Buy / Staples and then not having it done properly if at all along with the costs. Word of mouth usually leads them to my inbox.

I also do a lot of builds and support for family, friends and guildies. It's very small and moreso because I enjoy it not for profitability nor would I ever want to open up a storefront for the extra overhead and responsibility.

Yup. It's different now. Instead of leveling up for top end, they're just screwing everyone indescriminately at every level. That is not the same as charging a premium for premium. It's more like bad people being bad people and charging stupid people a premium for stupidity.

It is nearly impossible to get humans to not be greedy when that is how we've been programmed to be for quite some time especially in this capitalistic existence we currently inhabit.

As for 4090's....

With the way cards are trickling in today, best bet is to refresh a 4090 focused page and move fast. If you're focused on a particular brand, just select those specifically.

I know I picked MSI and Asus as there were no other makers I would contemplate to keep the list short and sweet but if you're open to any brand, your options do open up.

It is nearly impossible to get humans to not be greedy when that is how we've been programmed to be for quite some time especially in this capitalistic existence we currently inhabit.

That reminds me of how I got my 1080ti ftw3. EVGA was giving us a heads up in their forum of which models were getting ready to be stocked, and an approximate time. I had to sit on that product page, and F5 it until it showed up. Had to be fast with the credit card info....lol. This was when cryptodicking exploded, and regular Joes, couldnt get their hands on anything.

Intel and NVIDIA generally only engage in battles they have confidence they can win and typically only do things they are good at. AMD tries to do things that they are honestly not very good at doing. They may want to be and they may try hard. Acknowledging effort is appropriate, but only achievements and results truly deserve to be rewarded.

Have checked more on this. Forgot I had this problem before I once again installed new drivers. Regardless what I do. Newer drivers stop me from voltage control in Msi Afterburner. Also Zotac's own OC tool for this cards don't work anymore. Isn't it pervers? Tried once again edit the file. No go. Then I found this thread below. Exactly same card and same behaviour. Whats wrong with Nvidia? And can Zotac let Nvidia destroy for people who have paid money for the card do this? I need to take contact with Zotac forum/support.

Posted a new thread on Zotac/reddit

Yep, it seems nvidias nasty disgusting trickery with older cards that "still have driver support" ain't very intersting for the gamer kids. None reply on my nice new thread. I wonder if they will start cry in anger on the web or to mama when Nvidia also will do the same and kill of voltage tuning for their new and shiny +1000$ graphics cards. Exactly in the same way as Nvidia did for Maxwell and GTX980Ti.

I pinged an PM to pidge2k@ManuelGuzman. I said I have problem with my 980Ti and newer nvidia drivers and asked him for help. I didn't mention about the real reason for help. We'll see if he pm me back.

Yep, I will ask him directly why Nvidia killed voltage adjustments for Maxwell's GPU flagship (980Ti). I will ask if this is an ongoing bug or if this was intended. If he say it was intended and we (nvidia) can do nothing about it... Then I will ask him when Nvidia will do the same for Pascal, Turing, Ampere and ADA graphics cards. Yep, I can use older drivers, but remove features they offer for newer cards (Maxwell have still driver support) is damn retarded and should never happen in first place. Period!

Edit.

I can see that Nvidia also blocked voltage control for GTX960 with same driver 516.40

This showed up in Nvidia's feedback thread for 516.40 https://www.nvidia.com/en-us/geforce/forums/game-ready-drivers/13/494630/geforce-grd-51640-feedback-thread-released-61522/3258957/

One single soule complained about this in the feedback thread at Nvidia. Yep, one single person. If not more people enjoy tuning/overclock their cards, then I can clearly understand why Nvidia castrate new and older graphics cards. No one bother. They are happy with what they get. Castrated, overpriced or awful value doesn't matter @Mr. Fox

Btw. Nice paying massive premium for Galax HOF cards and all you get is the middle finger if you nicely ask Galax support. You aren't worthy our time. You have to beg others (those worthy benchers) to get whats needed.... Not the first time I see such askings. Brag about world records to increase sales thats ok, but the few "not worthy" that can snag a HOF card will be screwed.

Probably among the small number of GTX 980 owners that still exist, only one possessed enough intelligence to identify there is a problem. The rest of them are merely examples of why we can't have nice things any more.
