What phone are you daily driving currently?
saturnotaku replied to Katja's topic in Mobile Devices & Gadgets
After seeing the deep purple color for the iPhone 14 Pro, I had to have it so I placed a pre-order. When checking out through the Apple Store app, it said my payment didn't go through, yet I still received an order confirmation. I'm tempted to call my bank and ask if they approved the charge. -
USB-C to older connectors (barrel, Lenovo slim-tip, etc.)
saturnotaku replied to Yotsuko's topic in Accessories
This is intriguing as there are several laptops I've been interested in but dismissed because they don't support USB-C charging. -
Despite having a smaller capacity battery, my Blade 14 gets nearly double the run time under similar operating conditions as my former 11th-gen 15-inch model. Alder Lake is even worse in this regard. However, if you don't care about that, Intel definitely is the way to go this generation.

Been using a mid-range Blade 14 for about six weeks and have been quite happy with it. The difference in portability is noticeable even when compared to a 15-inch Razer laptop. The 16 GB of soldered RAM hasn't been a hindrance thus far. It runs surprisingly cool and quiet, too. The one thing that I really don't like is the USB-C ports seem to always be connected to the integrated Radeon graphics. Jarrod's review said they would connect to the NVIDIA graphics with the MUX switch set to dedicated GPU mode, but this hasn't been the case. Razer released an EC update that mentions "Improved stability for USB-C port" and I wonder if that didn't mess it up. I never tested on the old EC, and there's no way to downgrade.

Update on the kid's laptop. The Intel/RTX 3050 Ti model arrived, but despite Jarrod's Tech's review stating otherwise, the USB-C port was not providing charging in or video output, whereas the AMD/RTX 3050 one we got from MicroCenter does. So we're going to keep the latter. It's a nice budget machine that runs surprisingly cool and quiet. I really like that it included 16 GB of dual-channel DDR5 and a 512 GB SSD right out of the box.

Best guesses: 1) ADP likely relates to Bluetooth audio support, 2) this is probably some sort of update related to USB-C charging.

I was reading about this issue and am wondering if it's a problem on laptops that have Advanced Optimus or only those with standard G-Sync.

I had an XPS 17 9700 and loved most everything about it. The only thing I didn't like was the lack of a high-refresh screen, which was a real problem when gaming especially because the display didn't support FreeSync even when running through the iGPU. I wouldn't even care about 165-240 Hz - just 90 would be enough for me to switch right back.

Got a new stand to use with my Blade 14 at work so I can bring home my old one and pair it with my kid's first gaming laptop. We originally purchased a Lenovo IdeaPad 3 Gaming Gen 7 from MicroCenter that had a Ryzen 7 6800H and RTX 3050. However, Lenovo is running a back-to-school/pre-Labor Day sale so I was able to grab the Core i5 12500H and RTX 3050 Ti model for the same base price after discount codes. The 10% in additional Rakuten cash back will more than cover the cost of the three-year on-site accidental damage warranty because child. While the MicroCenter special has 16 GB of DDR5, the Intel model only had 8 GB of DDR4, but I can easily remedy that. The 32 GB kit I have will be way overkill, but it's what I have on-hand so there won't be any extra expenditure. I'm excited for it to arrive because I've been quite pleased with the AMD version in the few days it's been in service. The build quality is decent for an all-plastic chassis. I particularly like the smooth deck and trackpad. The screen is the crummy 120 Hz 250-nit panel found in all entry-level Lenovo and Dell gaming laptops, but it's not a huge deal since the laptop is going to be connected to a TV 95% of the time. The real disappointment is the keyboard, which feels harsh and plasticky - not at all what I would have expected from a Lenovo. I was looking to get a new wireless headset for my Blade 14 and found this on the clearance shelf at Walmart. I have the Xbox version, which is super comfortable, and while it can work on PC, it tends to cause blue screens. Can't argue with the price either.

Does locking the TDP mean the CPU is using 35W all the time, or will it never exceed the target, operating at lower levels when that amount of power is not needed?
-
While you can limit the amount of current a Type-C charger can provide a la the Asus ROG Flow X13/Z13, I don't think a full-on whitelist is possible. Either the port supports the power delivery standard or it doesn't.

Looks like 12th-gen motherboards are now available for the Framework, which will bring a significant increase in performance. I just wish they also offered an AMD option.

That shouldn't matter as long as the charger supports 20V/5A, at least if you want to actually use the laptop while on Type-C power.
-
You'd probably have better luck playing around with the maximum TDP. 35-40W seems to be the sweet spot between thermals and performance for Ryzen 5000+.
-
I believe this is the 240W GaN brick you're referring to: 240W DC & USB-C GaN Charger – SlimQ Official Store Really sucks, though, that you can't use regular Type-C to charge. You'd need to bump down to the X1 Extreme/P1 Gen 5 to get this capability, though you'll take a small hit in performance.
-
That's true of pretty much all 12th-gen laptops.
-
Can't be done. Only thing that you can do is limit the CPU's TDP.
-
You can get a P1 Gen 5 with a 12800H, 16 GB RAM, 1 TB SSD, RTX 3070 Ti, and 1600p/165 Hz panel for $2450 + 8% Rakuten cash back.
-
Even then, it's still not a deal considering it's a 3070 Ti.
-
That pricing is absurd, especially for the AMD one. The HP Omen 16 with the EX 6650M, so not much worse than the 6700, is currently on sale for nearly $1000 cheaper. When it gets discounted, the MSI Delta 15 with the same RX 6700M is in a similar price range.

The removal of the yellow filter in the Director's Cut was more of a lateral move. The presentation looks neither better nor worse, IMO. However, there are more glitches and such in the DC because all of its releases were based on the WiiU version. The character animations look weird. Stick to the original if you can get it.
