  1. Like I said, Dell/Alienware aren't pushing any one system or product line as 'Flagship'. This has come directly from them. They want two separate laptop lines which are directed at different markets rather than one line being considered better than the other. General perception is that the x line is the 'better' line though. I hope there is an x18 but, from what I've been told, there is no plan for one just yet.
  2. Just if anyone is interested, the m series is the 'no frills' performance line while the x series is designed to be the thinner/lighter range with some more experimental innovations. At this stage it doesn't look like there will be a x18. Also, the m18 is not considered to be the 'Flagship' system. Alienware don't consider any system or product line to be the Flagship.
  3. I'm not surprised at all with full BGA systems. There's no way things will go backwards (backwards as far as manufacturers are concerned, not the enthusiast consumer).
  4. I replied to your post on TechInferno but that site is run by d1ckh@ds so I'd prefer not to go over there again. You need the Unlocked BIOS which I believe you now have. Go to the second Advanced tab and change the video mode to SG. You should now be able to see the Intel graphics and the Nvidia dedicated graphics show up in the BIOS. Just check to see that the 1060 is listed in Device Manager as a Basic Microsoft Display Adapter. If it is then you just need to install a modified Nvidia driver @ssj92made this YouTube video which should be easy to follow. Give it a try and ask questions if you need.
  5. Intel (as well as AMD and Nvidia) have complete say in everything that goes into systems and how they are powered and controlled. The system manufacturers have very little control.
  6. They are aware of the complaints about the 300nits compared to other systems. I'm not sure if they will be changing anything in the near future though.
  7. Someone posted this on Reddit this week so it may be helpful for some of you.
  8. Well, you can mod a newer driver for an older unsupported GPU to bypass a driver version restriction that a certain game may have. But, the main reason driver modding is just to get newer Nvidia MXM GPU's to work on older laptops.
  9. There is zero chance it will be anything but a pure BGA laptop. I hope I'm wrong but I don't see Dell flipping the script at this stage.
  10. There is a very good chance that it will be 16:10 and slipped inside a 17" chassis. And yes, I think we all have to give up on the upgradeable laptop era, it ain't coming back.
  11. Yeah, you're going to need to be on SG mode. There could still be issues with the Zotac card though.
  12. If you're having weird fan behaviour then make sure you don't have Support Assist installed and remove/disable all the Dell Vault services.
  13. The P3000 should install just like a 10 series card. It will work best on the eDP display but it should also work fine on the LVDS display by piggybacking off the Intel graphics. You will usually find a small performance drop with this though. I haven't tried a P3000 myself so maybe someone else can confirm this.
  14. 980M's out of China are notoriously bad. Just make sure that you also have Load Legacy Option ROM and Secure Boot disabled with the UEFI setting enabled. Also try not plugging in the 3D emitter cable coming from the LCD that plugs in near to the display cable connector. I had a 780M that was acting weird and once I unplugged this connector from the board it started working properly. From what I have been told, the Chinese 980M's are just 980M dies on homemade PCB's so the quality is not like an OEM card, even if they look the same.
  15. The Optimus 17 R1 is LVDS and the 120hz 3D model is eDP. I tried it in the LVDS option. I had seen it working in the M6800 and I even messaged a guy on ebay who was selling a 6800 with one installed but he wouldn't tell me exactly how he got it working. All he said was that he flashed a quadro vBIOS on it. It has no video out so I was assuming this is why the system wouldn't detect it as a regular display adapter. I couldn't flash a vBIOS since the system wouldn't detect it and I didn't have a programmer.
  16. I had zero luck getting an M6 to work in an Optimus Alienware 17 R1. The system would not detect the card at all. Maybe I got a dud card.
  17. They are shady as hell. I still visited the site regularly and tried to help people but I gave up when they started editing my posts and deleting my DM's. All the big guys from the old days left them years ago
  18. TechInferno is still there but I'd suggest against spending much time over there. Years ago they thought it was a good idea to virtually use users computers for mining (or something like that) without their knowledge or permission. They still try and scam people out of money for 10 year old unlocked BIOS' and if you DM someone with a link to a free BIOS then they'll delete the message. NBR and Alienowners were closed down.
  19. At this point, the GTX 880M is the best Nvidia card that can be installed (SLI if you want). The R9 m290x is also an option but I'm not sure how it compares to the 880M these days. With AMD's driver support it could be a better option than the Nvidia but I believe some people had issues trying them in crossfire (some threads on TechInferno). Yes, you will need the unlocked BIOS which is available on this site.
  20. FYI, the link to the correct driver order is dead but here's the link from the NBR archive https://www.nbrchive.net/xfa/alienware.1018/HOW TO- Clean Windows 7 Install (Driver Install Order) Guide for Alienware Systems/
  21. It may seem a bit tricky but it really isn't too hard. I can walk you through step by step if you like and it will only take 10-15 mins.
