  1. Well, you can mod a newer driver for an older unsupported GPU to bypass a driver version restriction that a certain game may have. But, the main reason driver modding is just to get newer Nvidia MXM GPU's to work on older laptops.
  2. There is zero chance it will be anything but a pure BGA laptop. I hope I'm wrong but I don't see Dell flipping the script at this stage.
  3. There is a very good chance that it will be 16:10 and slipped inside a 17" chassis. And yes, I think we all have to give up on the upgradeable laptop era, it ain't coming back.
  4. Yeah, you're going to need to be on SG mode. There could still be issues with the Zotac card though.
  5. If you're having weird fan behaviour then make sure you don't have Support Assist installed and remove/disable all the Dell Vault services.
  6. The P3000 should install just like a 10 series card. It will work best on the eDP display but it should also work fine on the LVDS display by piggybacking off the Intel graphics. You will usually find a small performance drop with this though. I haven't tried a P3000 myself so maybe someone else can confirm this.
  7. 980M's out of China are notoriously bad. Just make sure that you also have Load Legacy Option ROM and Secure Boot disabled with the UEFI setting enabled. Also try not plugging in the 3D emitter cable coming from the LCD that plugs in near to the display cable connector. I had a 780M that was acting weird and once I unplugged this connector from the board it started working properly. From what I have been told, the Chinese 980M's are just 980M dies on homemade PCB's so the quality is not like an OEM card, even if they look the same.
  8. The Optimus 17 R1 is LVDS and the 120hz 3D model is eDP. I tried it in the LVDS option. I had seen it working in the M6800 and I even messaged a guy on ebay who was selling a 6800 with one installed but he wouldn't tell me exactly how he got it working. All he said was that he flashed a quadro vBIOS on it. It has no video out so I was assuming this is why the system wouldn't detect it as a regular display adapter. I couldn't flash a vBIOS since the system wouldn't detect it and I didn't have a programmer.
  9. I had zero luck getting an M6 to work in an Optimus Alienware 17 R1. The system would not detect the card at all. Maybe I got a dud card.
  10. They are shady as hell. I still visited the site regularly and tried to help people but I gave up when they started editing my posts and deleting my DM's. All the big guys from the old days left them years ago
  11. TechInferno is still there but I'd suggest against spending much time over there. Years ago they thought it was a good idea to virtually use users computers for mining (or something like that) without their knowledge or permission. They still try and scam people out of money for 10 year old unlocked BIOS' and if you DM someone with a link to a free BIOS then they'll delete the message. NBR and Alienowners were closed down.
  12. Yes, the very same
  13. Excellent news! Well done
  14. At this point, the GTX 880M is the best Nvidia card that can be installed (SLI if you want). The R9 m290x is also an option but I'm not sure how it compares to the 880M these days. With AMD's driver support it could be a better option than the Nvidia but I believe some people had issues trying them in crossfire (some threads on TechInferno). Yes, you will need the unlocked BIOS which is available on this site.
  15. FYI, the link to the correct driver order is dead but here's the link from the NBR archive https://www.nbrchive.net/xfa/alienware.1018/HOW TO- Clean Windows 7 Install (Driver Install Order) Guide for Alienware Systems/
  16. It may seem a bit tricky but it really isn't too hard. I can walk you through step by step if you like and it will only take 10-15 mins.
  17. Any 'NVidia' GPU 😉 @tosscobobble the inf mod may seem tricky but it's actually easier than you think and we're all here to help. I remember buying a 560M for an M15x back in 2012/13 and I couldn't find any good guides on how to do it and I couldn't find anyone to help.
  18. A lot of information has been lost due to NotebookReview being shut down and now recently Alienowners. That's why a few guys got this site running a little while ago. There is a NBR archive here though that has all the old threads to search through. Walk your way through the guides and let me know if anything stumps you. If you want to get me your hardware ID then I can help you write the line that needs to go into the .inf Go back into device manager and find the basic display adapter, right click on it - Properties - Details - select Hardware ID from the dropdown. I just need the first or second line
  19. Sounds very similar to this post How did you clear the CMOS? Did you bridge the CMOS battery connector pins? It sounds like you've tried the blind flash but maybe you didn't quite do it right
  20. Then the card is being detected. You need to modify the driver. Written guide and video below. Video thanks to @ssj92 https://null-src.com/posts/nvidia-notebook-driver-inf-mod/post.php Just let us know if you need any help. A few of us have done this sort of thing many times
  21. If GPU-Z can see the card then then the laptop is also detecting it. When you go to Device Manager what does it show you under Display Adapters? If you see a Microsoft Basic Display Adapter or VGA Adapter then that will be the 680M without a driver installed.
  22. I'm assuming you mean that Windows completely freezes up and you need to do a hard shutdown. Whenever I've had this happen it's been a hardware issue with the GPU, unfortunately. Keep an eye on the GPU temps leading up to the lock
  23. Looks like a good plan. If the card isn't getting power then I would assume that the BIOS won't detect the card. Will be interesting to see though.
