I like the new updates to the Nvidia App coming. AV1 fully embraced and auto overclocking. https://videocardz.com/newz/nvidia-app-gets-built-in-automatic-overclocking-for-geforce-gpus-which-will-not-invalidate-warranty This will take the auto turbo out of box experience which can be conservative and the app will take up to 20 minutes even finding your optimal OC to extract even more performance from your GPU. Manual OC'ers are running out of even more room...... -

I'll have to spot check my cables. I didn't get a chance to test it last night. I was all wrapped up in testing some Sonos Ace headphones watching the last 3 episodes of AppleTV+'s Foundation season two lol. (TL;DR I've had them for almost a week now and they're pretty awesome). I need to pull my desktop and give it an overall and some TLC along with the MSI PSU. I was thinking the same thing and like I said before, I knew the 30% uplift rumors were a Cheech and Chong moment for many with AMD. We'll have to see when real testing takes place but in light of Intel's new limits and stock vs stock (OC's don't count. My biggest pet peeve testing OC A vs stock B), I'll be curious to see what it brings to the table overall. I'm excited for Intel and hope they can bring the thunder and lightening again. 12th->14th++ just felt like Skylake all over again to me with an absolute banger out the door and then AMD slowly eroded their lead especially power consumption and keeping AVX-512 while Intel kept stretching it making it get hotter and heavier cramming more cores in there but unlike Skylake it's those efficiency cores. I just want Intel to get to a point they can offer a full fat 16 core monster someday. I'll believe 38-68% uplift when I see it. Just like with AMD, launch day always brings us back to earth. I'm pretty sure still I'm going to hold off till 9950X3D and that gives me time to see what Intel brings to the table. Running two Asus Vivobook Ultra 7 and Ultra 9 notebooks, the efficiency and better cooling performance per watt overall is definitely there compared to their 13th and 14th mobile parts. In the end, AMD drives Intel to not harken back to the day of only releasing marginal upgrades and keeping plenty in the tank for fatter margins and longer shelf life. The same holds true for AMD too. -

Funny how I went from no OLEDs to my main display being OLED and 3x of my laptops have OLED displays (Acer OLED 16 AMD, Asus Vivobook Ultra 7 155h/3050 OLED, Asus Vivobook Ultra 9 185h/3050 OLED). After using this Alienware 3225QF for several weeks, looking at other displays is downright painful now how washed out they can look nevermind those nice inky blacks (I keep my computer room lights low when in use). As for the MSI PSU, it is smaller but man it is dense and heavy lol. They packed a lot of stuff in that little chassis. The P2 1600w in my main rig is quiet but times change so in with the new and out with the old because newer is ALWAYS better....right @Papusan ? 🤣 Adorable little cats but I'm allergic to them unfortunately. 😞 -

Amazon Warehouse MSI AI1300 has arrived. Looks and smells brand new. Box was hammered a bit. If you see on the news a small domicile going all Chernobyl in Jersey later you will know it has failed spectacularly during testing.... -

Asrock seems to be turning a corner and really wants to be taken seriously lately. They already have the best AMD GPU board designs and like I said before that B650 HDV 2 dimmer motherboard I picked up for $74 had no problems hitting 8000+ and it actually scalled higher than my x670e Carbon wifi. One thing I like about Jufus is he goes for bang:buck not name brand when reviewing. On the other hand, I notice when all is said and done only the creme de la creme components end up in his own personal rig. 🙂 -

Just throwing a little dark humor on it. 🙂 I know that feeling when a pricey piece of electronics goes bye bye. Reminds me when I was boxing up a $1700 Surface Pro to return to amazon and accidentally dropped it shattering the screen and had to pay $400 to fix it only to then sell it off because I didn't want it and took an overall $600 hit. Told my wife what happened after I dropped it and her response, "Nice job Thumbelina" 🤣 I find NWR and his work to be more exacting than the other popular guy when dealing with GPUs. I think he is the one who repaired @Mr. Fox's 2080ti and has decent rates. -

Damn.... So what now? Fix it yourself? Try to get warranty repair? Send it to Northwest Repair? Pick up an open box Asrock Taichi 7900xtx? Go with another brand? Use Integrated as punishment for the thermal tape mishap? 🙂 -

Where was the tape placed and did it cause some overheating and/or a cracking issue? Man, that does suck. -

Nope, I was on the previous one. I'll definitely try this one and see if boot times improve. While I finish fleshing out my daughter's Team Red system, I'm fighting the urge to order an open box Asrock Taichi 7900xtx white and sell the Powercolor Spectral White Edition7900xtx for more aRGB control lol.... -

Definitely worthy having skipped a generation. The 5090 will be a monster upgrade. I plan on picking up a Battlemage considering I liked what I saw with the A380 and A770. My nephew is still rocking the A380 I built for him but he's ready for an upgrade now. After price shopping bang:buck, he's looking at a Radeon 6800xt since they're 429.99 on Amazon now. That is insane bang:buck performance right there. Sometimes knowing your worth is walking away in all aspects of life especially your work life. You seem to be a really nice guy and bosses and co-workers can and will take advantage of the nice guys and hard workers. You try to follow all the proper channels to correct the issues (especially if you overall like your job), but at a certain point enough is enough. Hopefully you've enacted in place the means to support your self while you look for another job and you handled it properly giving your notice. A notice will sometimes give the company time to reflect on your worth and they may correct their ways both in work environment and compensation. Good luck! -

I routinely have both platforms going over here at "House Electrosoft" at one time or another. When Intel drops their new chips this fall, if I like what I see, I'll end up picking up one of them to slap in my workbench/test case for funsies. Kinda like what I did when I was running my 5800x and scooped up an 11700k and MB to see what it was all about (and eventually 11900k). The only chip it looks like I'm going to skip from intel is 14th gen and that's because I can't stomach paying more than $600 even for a binned chip for what is really a glorified 13900ks which I had before and was a fantastic specimen. I passed on an SP108 14900KS that was actually decent for $800 because it just wasn't worth it to me at this point. I haven't skipped an Intel chip since the original Core when I was on AMD FX-60. Nice! @Prema Any chance you can enable 13th/14th gen support for the NH55 of is it basically impossible due to hardware restrictions? -

Seriously, if that is the pricing I will just extend my 4090 from 2+ years (when I would buy a 5090 in ~January 2025 having bought my 4090 in January 2023) to well past that and be content. It's not like it isn't holding it down in WoW and Fallout 76. At 4k, the 4090 still isn't fully saturated yet due to the CPU. Same even moreso with Fallout 76. I literally have 5 laptops on the shelf so I'm not sure where I'm going there. Absolute end game for me with this Alienware 3225QF. It is just a monster. Going to wait for 9950X3D so that means nothing till next year (Unless Intel surprises us and drops the bunker buster). I starting to think the NH55 can support the 13th or 14th gen and may hit the same wall as the X170SM-G that can't do 11th gen. I'm not sure what's going to fill my tech toys itch during the next year or so. 🤣 -

*Taps mat* "I'm out" Even if it comes in at $2k, MSI, Asus and others with good models will easily be $2200+ if not more in the short term... Ugh $2500 for a 448-bit variant and not the full 512-bit like @Papusan is alluding to and in the wings a most likely $3k 5090ti down the road?! Nvidia has zero competition this time around.... Intel is staggering into their Battlemage like a drunken sailor during fleet week.... AMD has tucked tail this cycle with shades of the 5700xt on deck while they focus on AI too on top of it.... AI focused companies are snapping up everything Nvidia can sell price be damned so Nvidia doesn't even need gamers.... If any of this pricing madness comes to fruition, I'll be skipping this next cycle and living vicariously through @Talon (aka back to our regularly scheduled program 🤣) -

Yeah, no way I'm paying $300+, but sub $200? Sure and yep with AW, if it isn't working back it goes. I'd say I'm ~85% hit with AW. Some misses have been 1x PSU, 2x Motherboards and 1x AIO that I can recall but I've ordered from them for almost 10years now when the situation is right. The savings can be pretty substantial. -

Picked up a 1300w MSI MEG AI1300w PSU (LOL at the "AI" now included) from Amazon Warehouse for $142.00. Let's see how it is when it arrives Wednesday. I couldn't pass up that price. I ended up sacrificing my EVGA P2 850w from my work bench case to my daughter's system currently in build stage because the Powercolor 7900xtx was freezing/tripping the EVGA GQ 850w PSU when benching. I swapped it into my main rig for testing and it worked absolutely fine. I then tested it with the P2 850w and it worked absolutely fine. Back to the GQ 850w? Lock ups when benching. I plan on slapping the Watt Meter on it to see what it's pulling transient wise. For giggles, I tested the 7900xtx on a Thermalright 600w GX2 which is tier A rated and watched the entire system shut down over and over again on launch for Timespy. 🤣 I might swap my EVGA P2 1600w for the 1300w since it does have the 12vhpwr connector and would eliminate the tentacle from MSI with an MSI PSU/12hpwr cable run. -

I can see their logic isolating and having targeted tests for the GPU and CPU individually, but depending on CPU it still carries some weight in the score at a certain point and should be reflected somewhere even if as a percentage. We do have to remember we are the drastic minority here in regards to what we do and what we expect out of our hardware/software. It is what it is. 😞 -

I really need to have a reckoning of sorts with my parts collection. I have stuff dating back to the m15 920xm still here and sandy bridge desktops. That is just the tip of the iceberg. We plan on having a secondary shed built soon and play the "Shed or Trash" game and I feel trash is going to win easily and clear up a lot of room. I literally have shelves and closets full of tech.... Looks very promising. Single core speeds >=14th gen and all big boy cores vs hybrid garbage. I do wish Intel could get their act together and give us 16 P-cores. If rumors are true and next gen AMD is looking to explore 24 and 32 core desktop chips, Intel needs to "get good" sooner than later. Ditto. I'm going to try and fight the good fight and wait for the 9950X3D. 🙂 -

Now that temps are back in sanity-ville, I'll be curious to see what the Aqua unlocked vBIOS does. Hopefully Asrock brings the heat with the board refresh to have a near complete "Temple of Asrock" type build. -

Return of socketed / upgradeable CPUs and GPUs for laptops at Computex?
electrosoft replied to 1610ftw's topic in Tech News
This would be most welcome news. I can see with not only AMD chips (not sure why one wasn't made for the 7000 series) but especially Intel's Ultra/AL line up returning to some voltage sanity we could see a few models. I'm equally curious to see if it would be a hybrid like the NH55 or one with interchangeable graphics as well. -

Ahhh, good memories. I lost count how many times I used mine for P870x and P775x clevo laptops and MXM cards especially with Dsanke which basically was, "roll the dice on a CLI flash and if it doesn't boot, crack it open" My go to programmer was/is a Wingoneer along with one of these just in case of course This is the first time running into a major BIOS regression for me with regards to the boot times and no real tangible gains for current AM5 chips. 😞 I am almost 100% sure I will be skipping the launch 9950x and waiting for the 9950X3D.....almost. Do you plan on switching motherboards for the new chip launch of sticking with the MSI? -

electrosoft replied to Mr. Fox's topic in Desktop Hardware
Yep, I was pretty sure it was accurate. 😞 7000 series are so sensitive with hotspot differentials it isn't even funny but once you have a good mount in place your hot spots will finally normalize in the 80s even for air cooling. Fixed and now your hotspots are right where they should be. Where your setup is going to shine is when you start to really push it and water comes into play especially with the unlocked Aqua vBIOS on what is, again, the very best PCB design for AMD with Asrock. Best results have seem to come consistently with PTM7950 both temps for core and especially hot spot. Just something to keep in mind. BTW, I finally flashed the newest BIOS from MSI and how is it possible boot times with memory context restore off has INCREASED from ~55 seconds to 90 seconds now with my tuned sticks? lol.... I don't mind as I usually fire up my system and then go make tea each morning but when retuning my memory to see if anything had changed for the better the post times are insane. -
*Official Benchmark Thread* - Post it here or it didn't happen :D
electrosoft replied to Mr. Fox's topic in Desktop Hardware
On 7000 series, there have been cases of massive differentials between core and hot spot so it can happen especially with water cooling that depending on mount/placement, can keep the core temp even cooler while the hot spot suffers. That is also why I asked if you used PTM7950 on it because for GPUs and especially it seems form 7000 series, it can really help correct the wide chasm that can pop up between core and hot spot temps. -

electrosoft replied to Mr. Fox's topic in Desktop Hardware
Whoa 111?, that hotspot is one thing holding you back. Even on air, that should at most be in the 80s if done right. On water even with clock pushing low 90s at worse. None of my 7900xtx's I tested (XFX 7900xtx, MSI 7900xtx and now Powercolor 7900xtx) topped out in the 80s at most. When I get this mess of hardware re-assembled I'll retest. Did you use 7950, LM or thermal paste? This. Unfortunately AMD has really started to adopt Nvidia practices instead of being different which doesn't help them considering they're constantly lagging. 😞
