Had it been all core, I'd imagine the power draw would be over 300 watts at the temperature the CPU was operating at. The X170 seems to have a current limit though as I've never been able to get over 275 watts, even with the power limits set insanely high.

Biggest current generation COMBINED power draw for CPU and GPU is 250W - kind of puts things in perspective 😄

quite the depressing perspective if you ask me 😅if this trend continues, our forum will be more reminiscing about "the good ol days" and keeping classic, EOL DTRs alive rather than discussing current tech (aside from bitchin about it, of course lol)

Nah, just wait for the X170 successor that you can put your 13900K into - we need it so it has to materialize 😄

No one yet has tried it, but I can't see a reason one wouldn't work. Just swap in a KM heatsink or pickup a universal heatsink from Aliexpress and you're good on the hardware front.

I seem to recall firmware issues of some kind, maybe I remember wrongly from the old forums. Personally I have a 2080S so a change to a 3080 seems rather pointless, but was interested in the theory

I'm not sure if that was with stock BIOS or Prema but either way I agree. We're both in the same boat with 2080S so the 3080 upgrade is ho hum at best.

huh, out of curiosity i was looking into some performance numbers on NBC (yes i know i know, but at least same baseline lol), turns out the difference is maybe a few percent here and there? nothing to write home about...

I think the performance difference is 15% MAX. In most cases it's more like half that.

I believe the problem comes from nvidia thinking we at home can afford running a nuclear power plant just for a single stinking gpu, thus making it harder to have a neat mxm module that resembles its namesake to at least 75% of its performance. By the look of things it seems the trend is getting worse with the 4000 series

Yeah that was a good run over there. I was a member since 2008/9 so 10+ years.

Luckily after some clearing of the air with three potential forums as a replacement the other two went under but NBT persisted and is growing and thriving.

Welcome back!

So I do have a question about the Storage options on the X170SM-G.

There are 4 slots, the 3 that are together are M.2 NMVe slots right? and the single slot is an M.2 SATA right? I wan't to fill the M.2 SATA slot with a 2TB drive for storage, but can't seem to find anything that will work. The EVO 860 was listed as an option, but I cannot find a 2TB one, the 1TB and smaller ones are still available.

This is correct. I am personally using 2x 2TB Samsung 970 EVO Pluses in my X170SM-G.

The 2TB m.2 860 EVOs seem to be out of stock. There are other brands though that offer 2TB m.2 Sata drives such as Western Digital. I'm not sure how good their SSDs are since I've only ever had experience with Samsung SSDs.

I'm already not impressed with this forum site because all the questions are in 1 massive thread, Has anyone looked into what the cost would be to start our own forum site? I hate forum sites with advertisements, but I guess that is how they fund keeping the site open.

Thank you,

I really want to fill all 4 slots with 4Tb drives, but that costs more than the laptop did....maybe ... lol...... and for the SATA M.2 I can't find anything in the 4Tb range.

Sabrent seems to be the only place with 4 and 8TB NVM'e and the 8TB NVMe's are still like $1600

Are there any M.2 NVMe drives that are not compatible, like can I put PCIe 4.x M.2 NVMe drives in the X170SM-G?

from one SSD snob to the other: what u hogging for mate? 😄 u really need that much SSD space internally?

and yes, 4TB+ M.2 drives are insanely expensive, im currently saving up for a 4TB Seagate Firecuda 530, cant wait!

cheapest 4TB M.2 I can find is the Crucial P3 for 409€ currently (not sure where ure located though, this is in Europe). however, this one is without DRAM Cache and with QLC.

cheapest 4TB M.2 with TLC would be the ADATA XPG SX8100 for 445€, but still without DRAM Cache.

cheapest 4TB M.2 with TLC and DRAM Cache would be the PNY XLR8 CS3040 for 544€ with 5 years warranty but only a meager 900 TBW.

cheapest 4TB M.2 I would actually start recommend getting is the WD Red SN700 with 5 years warranty, DRAM Cache, TLC and a whopping 5.1 PBW for 548€. Do note that this is a pcie 3.0 drive though.

as for 8TB M.2 drives, there are not that many to choose from as of yet:

- Sabrent Rocket 4 Plus 8TB (TLC)- 1800€

- Sabrent Rocket Q 8TB (QLC) - 1600€

- PNY CS2130 8TB (QLC) - 1000€

- Mushkin Alpha 8TB (QLC) - N/A

- Corsair MP400 8TB (QLC) - 1950€

- TeamGroup MP34Q 8TB (QLC) - N/A

As for SATA M.2 drives, there are none at 4TB, they max out at 2TB and the likelihood of them being developed further is low. High capacity will rather focus on 2.5" SATA drivers rather than M.2 due to space constraints on the latter.

In general, i would recommend looking for the following when choosing an SSD:

- DO NOT go for QLC, speed and reliability are not worth the few bucks ure saving. TLC absolute minimum

- Ignore everything below 5 years warranty

- Ignore everything without a dedicated DRAM Cache

- for TBW under warranty, at 4TB i would recommend a minimum of 2.4PB, which is what the Samsung Evo 860 and 870 provide at that capacity. Absolute minimum 2 PB, anything below that is not worth considering if you ask me.

- 4K IOPS: for 2.5" SATA go for minimum 80-85K and above, for pcie 3.0 500K and above, for pcie 4.0 ideally go for 900K-1M

- Sequential: 2.5" SATA 500 MB/s and above, pcie 3.0 3000 MB/S and above, pcie 4.0 6000-6500 MB/s and above.

lol, Since the SM-G is a beast, I use it for Photo Editing, 4k Video editing, A huge flac library and I use SQL Management Studio testing new database techniques, etc. So having 8Tb x 4 drives would be nice 🙂 Hogging all that space up.

I already have a 12 bay QNAP on the network, but some of the file sizes I work with need space + space for cache....

This site is laid out just like the old NBR in regards to the forums with owner threads.

I don't see any advertising here. I do use an ad blocker but even switched off to check I do not see any.

If @Reciever needed to pump in some ads to support the site I would turn my blocker off for this site as a courtesy.

This site is laid out just like the old NBR in regards to the forums with owner threads.

I don't see any advertising here. I do use an ad blocker but even switched off to check I do not see any.

If @Reciever needed to pump in some ads to support the site I would turn my blocker off for this site as a courtesy.

Im just as human as the rest of you, and also dont want ads on the forum, which is why there is none :P. I would sooner accept donations, subscriptions, crypto etc etc before I would turn to ads, to which I am also hesitant.

As for suggestions @Snowleopard there is a location for just that here. Though your post will need to have some modicum of construction as currently I am unsure what your dissatisfaction is, if its something I can facilitate I am happy to do so.

on the old NBR forums someone had a link to "clean" ISO's for windows 10 and maybe 11 with all the bloatware disabled, and then they had a link to purchase afforable license keys, unfortunately that site does not sell license keys for MS products anymore. Does anyone have a place to go for those now? (Both the ISO's and key's)
