I've always been into emulating older consoles but haven't spent much time with "modern" ones.  My kids took over my Switch so it's easier to just play on my laptop so that I don't have to compete for time; I dumped my games/saves, and I've been playing Xenoblade Chronicles 3 in yuzu.  (Amazing how far this has come along in a short time, basically every game I have thrown at it runs fine, and many of them can get a 4K upgrade.)

You know, it was sort of slow going at first but I'm about 20 hours in and I'm really loving it.  (I'm expecting my run will be in the 60-70 hour range.  I only play about an hour a day so it'll take me several weeks...)  I'll say that they keep adding more and more mechanics, there's a lot of depth and things to mess with (but fortunately you can ignore a lot of it if you want).  I have played all of the previous games in this series and I'd say that it's probably my favorite modern JRPG series right now (dethroning Final Fantasy which has struggled to have good entries since, I dunno, IX — I did enjoy XV which I played this past summer, but it felt sort of like an incomplete game in some ways).  This game's story isn't especially connected to the previous ones so I think it could be played standalone, but there are some references here and there (and I expect it might become more connected as I get towards the end, XC2 was like that).

Got the dreaded "unknown error: FFFFFF" firing up RDR2 and I'm pretty sure it has to do with changing multiple graphics settings that require restarting the game but not actually restarting immediately. How that's still needed by an old but still kinda new game like RDR2 is beyond me. I can think of maybe 2-3 games that require that out of hundreds.

I'm pretty sure changing API's is also part of it so going back and forth between Vulcan/DX12 is even more of a pain beyond restart. I think RDR2 has almost too many graphics options and they're not too friendly to each other. Had to tear out some saves, copy some files from a control group of the games smaller files I had before modding. So this MIGHT be tied to modding as well.

Anyways working fine now with about 12 mods installed, mostly QOL.

I found a got a lot better performance in RDR2 using DX12 rather than Vulkan. Did a lot of back to back tests to confirm it.

As for what I'm playing these days.. eh.. have no had a ton of time but I grabbed Hogwarts Legacy and it's pretty good so far but everything is just filler till Starfield.

Yeah the lows on dx12 are about 10fps higher than vulcan but I get more stutter on dx12, since I limit it to 60fps and no vsync I usually stick to vulcan as it rarely goes to those low frames, at least in this modding phase and playing as John in the epilogue doing his non story missions and exploring. Eventually will load up my earliest manual save at like 25% so valentine area.

Modding is a pain in RDR2, there's a lot but a lot have not been updated for a while and call out requirements like LML, various scripthooks, etc that have been updated so a lot of them don't work but don't crash the game either. I'm not big into lots of hotkeys etc for loading up new map stuff, just make it work in game automatically and naturally with the controls. Theres a lot of MX, 1907 Austin project, etc that require other mods that needs a lot of hotkeys to work etc

My most used are =camp anywhere, really nice to find an amazing loc and be able to setup camp there instead of RS approved location a mile away.

= Weapon locker at camp fires also essential.

= Block horse auto holster.

=Seats/leaning for bathroom breaks etc.

= No cores a must but sadly is only for the players cores, have not found a working one for horse cores.

=Open interiors.

=Dark Nights.

=A lot of this stuff is available ONLY on rdr2mods.com instead of Nexus, kind of a pain. Almost everything uses Lennys Mod Loader but it's only on the rdr2mods site, would have missed out on others like dark nights etc

=Jobs mod get paid for train conducting, deliveries, mining, chopping wood, etc

=Dynamic Seasons is just ok, seems like you can't change the length or it just stops it from changing, stuck with 10 real hours of each one.

=I also use LST, Lennys Simple Trainer, pretty convenient for my offline SP only, love the game but due to time constraints I try to bother with as little filler(imo) as possible and this helps cut it out. The bodyguard spawning is nice for assaults, hunting skinners, etc Teleports to all over the map including Guarma. Saw the UFO for the first time since it has a teleport loc to what it calls the UFO cult cabin lol

Oh.. I also grabbed Cemu and I was playing Zelda BoTW with it. I kind of see why everyone likes Nintendo games all over again. I haven't had a Nintendo console really since the Gamecube except for a DS I had back in like 2007... Oh wait we did have Wii.. I didn't play it hardly at all though.

Yeah cemu one of the best ones, I could never get into botw though too cartoony but not like the newer/3d mario cartoony which is fun, maybe too much realism in there and not indication of where to go next etc Didn't find the world too exciting either. I think I grabbed it for yoshis woolly world which I have on 3DS works great and looks way better.

Amazes me how much content there is in RDR2. I picked up my epilogue save after getting micah etc and there's the evelyn miller-henry david thoreau sideline, marko dravik-Tesla, the otis hinton hillbilly butcher creek, the Veteran Buelle horse one guess I didn't get to these during the campaign, the Guagin artist CC one, etc And the filler 100% OCD stuff like hunting, rock drawings/sinclair mystery, Dino bones, plant guy, murder whore in valentine, etc Tons of scripts in this game.

I just wish this had color saturation and adjustment in game(and vignette disabler) since it looks washed out a lot not doing a reshade. Stuck in Contracts which is nice here and there and the Bounties expanded another one. Dynamic weather got to winter finally and it was gorgeous to see snow all over the map not just the prologue mountains area. And of course the old RDR1 area not much there to do, guess that's for online play what a waste.

I decided to go back to my roots to reclaim what I lost. the ability to actually enjoy video games. so i booted up sonic adventure dx a 3d sonic game and yes it was fun, perhaps the problem isn't the fact im older now buy that games are un fun. they are just not fun, I don't want a super easy and simple game with no skills or enjoyment, I don't want to be forced to sit through a dumb story that is void of color. I want fun.

Played their previous game, The Forest, and it was ok, definitely had the creepy thing down pat and exploration was pretty interesting. Mysterious for sure with little hand holding. I'm not really much on survival sims though. From what I remember their games are typical indy not well optimized but I guess everyone here has the equipment. I don't believe the 2mil sold in 24hrs bs the dev put out there with no proof though, just a marketing strategy imo Looks like just another version of The Forest and is still early access.

I installed the rampage trainer and I guess a lot of the mods I had in there actually need it to work, at least 1907 austin works now which is a nice fleshing out of that area especially Armadillo which is full of people and not a zombie ghost town now. I think Vestigia works now so more variety overall. I'm not sure if Ambient Gangs works now noticed an ambush with "strangers" and more Del Lobos around NA then before, have to explore other parts of the world to confirm.

Moonshiners still crashes so that's gone. But yeah Rampage has a way to disable the horse cores which is nice, a much larger teleport menu than Lennys Simple Trainer had. Good way to see lots of places missed quickly, caves, mexico, the macabre places, can teleport to each rock drawing, even mark where dino bones are etc All sorts of interesting options. Think I've got a few dozen solid working mods now and can load up my ch.2 ultimate save I got off nexus.

Update2: yeah restart worked but how ridiculous to have to do that to start the game, going to try later to see if I have to restart again or not, no changes whatsoever.

Update: Ugh this game is such a pain, now it crashes in the loading screen, no error given and I made no changes afa mods etc from a previous long session. I turned off MSIAB w the OC to see if that was it. As RS's most recent release it's terrible that stuff like this has not been solved, plenty of people still get this sort of bug today when doing SP. Updates are all for RDO for a long time and usually break SP. Ugh keep trying but so frustrating. Another system restart to see I guess but it's ridiculous to have to do that every time, my page file is 18gb should not be a problem.

=============================

Started the Ch 2 ultimate save from nexus. Works fine, kinda nice to see all the stuff I never bothered with in the other story play throughs like the crafted clothes tied to hunting etc Another "unknown error FFFFFF" road block out of nowhere. Fixed it. Some details below for anyone having problems needing info.

I also came across this video game articles web site, has an interesting article about RDR2 and its slower moments which are nice but the slower controls can get irritating during high action, really bad in transition. https://gamestudies.org/2203/articles/vanderhoef_payne

Of course before this game there were plenty of others that had slower time in them, just TheHunter COW is slower, much slower than RDR2, if you play it without spawn cheats and the environment on average looks better than RDR2. INFRA is not the fastest game either but is geared towards exploration, observation and environmental puzzles. I get that they focused on a AAA mass market game there though. Very Marxist interpretation/jargon, not surprising.

------------------------------------

I put in a Vestigia plugin for no vignette and another vestiga compatibility for TAA Enhanced as well as RDR Enhanced Visual Settings for no vignette. It's hard to tell if vignette is disabled without a clear example of the vignetting. I'm guessing it's easier to see in the lower screen edges that usually looks darker to me. So I went back to previous things and still the FFFFF error. Tore out the latest save still FFFFF. According to the RDRscripthook log right after it loaded ASI list and then extended 1-4 memory pools it left off logging probably the crash. Some memory leak or tweak issue. Anyways I put the save back in, same settings file in documents, just got rid of the Vestigia Community variants, the Enhanced Visual Settings stuff. Restarted system then it fired right up. So it's not settings, it's not save file corruption, must have been a conflict or change between those 3 mods. I'm not thinking it's Vestigia community variants must be the Enhanced visual settings mod for no vignette issue. Just stick with the Vestigia plugin for no vignette assume it works.

Was sick and in a mood for a bit of retro so played Amiga "Space Hulk" and "Deuteros". Surprisingly atmospheric, even after 30 years, and fiendishly difficult compared to modern games, which is always good.

What a buggy game rdr2 is, just get unknown error fffff yesterday, restart worked. Then was playing for a while and got the out of virtual memory crash for the first time after playing for so long, so I adjusted the page file to min of my physical ram, 16gb to around 25gb max. It's also on an external ssd so went ahead and did a page file on there 8-15gb. So far it's been fine, doing the ch.2 save mostly story stuff but interesting to see how the world is in 1899 vs 1907 around the map and during the main story there's more going on in general than during post epilogue. I have the never wanted and disable hidden snipers on in rampage so can go anywhere. I also turn off MSIAB and the lite OC I have as a preset there probably also source of some bugginess with rdr2.

But last I had MSIAB on during rdr2 it takes about 7.5gb sysmem and 4.5gb vram, nothing crazy so the virtual memory thing must be a game bug more than anything, not surprising seems like an abandoned game really and definitely abandoned SP, still want 60-100$ for it though sheesh. Still, watching some atomic heart yt's they also want 60 for that and seems like much less content, crazy.

Amazing game and I really can't remember anything close to rdr2 other than TW3, the amount of detail and writing mind blowing. Too bad it's essentially abandoned for a while, switched to gta6 focus.

That does look amazing and I sort of hate myself for not playing it. I tried, I played for a good few hours and while it's extremely nice looking and complex with a great story, I'm just not a fan of that era (cowbows, early america, etc). For me it's either futuristic/cyberpunk/post apocalyptic or much further back like TW3

And that in game shot is w my lowly system, I don't even use dlss and get mostly 60 locked. Still have not found a way to turn off the vignette ugh. Still secrets there too after playing it a lot before. Just wandering is actually fun, esp w Rampage, more than just a trainer. Have to take a roundabout way to get my screenshots bc of RS antisocial club nonsense, so dumb compared to say cp77.

GTAV fits in there too, huge open world that's alive. CP77 world is empty if you go anywhere out of the main areas, those fwys/etc would be packed and I'm not sure why they couldn't do that other than sparing peoples cpu's and ram with those gorgeous graphics etc Yakuzas also fit in there but MUCH smaller worlds, but are packed with amusing things and of course not in the same league graphically.  Y7 seemed to be a lot larger still have to get back to that.
