Another minor technical anomaly I've just noticed is that the forum claims it cannot support mp4 files, but then they do actually get uploaded and work: Also, I can't see any way to cancel the upload process. You have to wait until the upload completes before the "x" appeared to delete the attachment. They also seem to display in the chat box at a rather large size, in this case much larger than the resolution of the source video: https://notebooktalk.net/topic/105-the-random-thread/?do=findComment&comment=8070&_rid=111 It would be nice if we could set a smaller window size for meme videos :) ..And even more minor – pasting in the .png screenshot above (via drag and drop in this case) gives the "pasted as rich text format" message.

So, if I understand you correctly, you're after a programmable keyboard which stores the programming on board such that it can then send out combinations of standard keystrokes? I wonder if there might be any issues with timing compatibility when you try to use it with very different types of hardware.. Anyway, it looks like such things do exist, although many programmable keyboards do not clarify this important detail of their operation so you might have to ask for clarification from suppliers. But some options that look like they might work include #'s 1, 4, 7, 11, 12, 14, 15, 18 and 19 in this list: https://www.findthisbest.com/best-keyboards/programmable-keypad ... because they appear to work by means of initial setup in Windows, but can then be used on any system/cross-platform. Probably some of the others there also work the same way. Or, I also came across these: https://www.prehkeytec.com/products/programmable-keyboards/ which might also work given that they are: "Platform independent: Windows®, Linux®, Android™ and DOS compatible"

I use four upside down metal spring style egg cups that I found in the cupboard of my flat, all along the rear edge of laptop... 😁

I would second the cautionary note on Acer. Maybe they have improved in the past few years, but any we ever used in my small company never seemed to last very long. Though in fairness few did in our environment apart from some ancient Windows XP Dells which just refused to die even if they did get stupidly slow 😄

Does anyone have any experience with any of these, or know of any similar options? https://www.fairphone.com/ https://www.shiftphones.com/en/ https://www.pine64.org/ I thought it might be good to start a thread on this topic.. probably we could have a similar thread about laptops too come to think of it!

Did the video driver get updated by any chance? That's what broke my brightness control... Had to do a system restore to fix it. The loss of sleep option is extra weird though.. Does it still appear in the menu that appears when you go to desktop and press Alt-F4 ?

I just meant the normal notifications under the bell icon at top right of page. I don't use any kind of push notifications.

I was checking out their stuff recently, and my favourite were these two: https://macroblank.bandcamp.com/album/--18 https://macroblank.bandcamp.com/album/avalanche-lp It's good to realise that their music isn't theirs in any way shape or form. They are essentially mix tapes / collections of old lounge classics. They have just modified them from their original with a little bit of final production touches such as changing the tempo slightly. In fairness, they openly state this: and make everything free to download via Bandcamp and Mega. And they are nicely put together collections all the same. I just wish they would give proper credit as to what all the originals are, but can kind of understand why they don't in the world we live in. It is funny to see many of the younger generation comments on YouTube who think it's new and original 😂

introduction Laptop battery management and power state alerts
Ishayin replied to Ishayin's topic in Components & Upgrades
Thanks! I've just done some poking around and have got some mixed signals back on whether this is or can also be the case on 8.1. But I did find two interesting titbits along the way, namely that that message appears to be connected with a particular device in device manager: https://www.tenforums.com/general-support/103697-how-do-i-completely-disable-windows-low-battery-warning.html And also that since Windows 7, you can get the system to generate a full power and battery report with "powercfg -energy" in command prompt: http://www.helpwithwindows.com/Windows7/Check-your-laptop-battery-health-in-Windows-7.html Mine has come back saying: Design Capacity 79920 Last Full Charge 80334 So it's reporting to be in perfect health which I'm a little suspicious off given its age. I mean, I never use the battery, but I thought that keeping them at 100% was supposed to be bad for Li-ion batteries. So after 7 years of that I would have expected some deterioration... I also discovered that in the taskbar Sounds settings there are particular entries you can set for low and critical battery level sound alerts. I had my sound scheme set to "No sounds", but even when I switch it back to "Windows Defautl" it seems that none of my Windows sounds will play when I try to test them. Can't say I'm too unhappy about that though 😂- 7 replies

introduction Laptop battery management and power state alerts
Ishayin replied to Ishayin's topic in Components & Upgrades
Thank you @Sandy Bridge and @a.Techie for both of your helpful replies. I've found the relevant options in the power settings now and have changed my on battery low power level setting from 10% to 80%. Hopefully the notification might appear in good time now (I've never seen it come up before). I've also changed the on battery critical level from 5% to 10%, and the critical battery action from hibernate to sleep. Hopefully that will help with a quicker turnaround at least if I do still miss the notification.. Actually, can anyone confirm what form the low battery notification is supposed to take in Windows 8.1 or even 10? I don't have any kind of program related notifications (I probably disabled them if they exist in 8.1), but I would have assumed a low battery notification would be something more fundamental associated with the battery indicator in the system tray.- 7 replies

I've just had the same issue as cucubits. I would have assumed I would get notifications for people replying to a thread I created. Is there any way to enable this by default (still keeping the option to disable it again)?

What phone are you daily driving currently?
Ishayin replied to Katja's topic in Mobile Devices & Gadgets
It depends on your own usage habits and needs. Personally I don't care about recharge time as I never find it to be much of a limitation in practice. Whereas longevity does matter for me if I'm using it to navigate etc. while out all day away from any power sources. -
Apologies, I didn't realise that this feature has only been rolled out so far in Chromium based browsers. So it will work in e.g. Vivaldi or Opera, but not in Firefox which might explain why it's not working for you. Hi folks, Something that has always been a little weird with my Clevo (P751ZM) is the battery management. I basically always use it plugged in, and so the battery is basically just there as an backup power supply. The power connection at the back is not the most robust, and occasionally becomes disconnected when I move the laptop back and forth a little on the desk. However, I never notice when this happens, nor do I get any alert when the battery is running low (which happens rather quickly on this machine). So typically, the first I know about it is when it suddenly goes dead. And yes, I mean dead. It usually doesn't even go into hibernation, just runs all the way down to 0% and then dies. However, it did happen again last night, but for once it seemed to recover from having successfully hibernated, and then showed there was still 47% battery remaining... which was a bit of an odd one off. Any comments on suggestions that might help with this are welcome, and in particular I'm wondering if there are any recommendations for utilities that: 1) Provide a warning when power has been disconnected. 2) Provide any other sort of battery management capabilities such as keeping it in the ~40–80% region for longevity. I know there are some more recent laptops that have options for the latter (I think on some Macs?), though possibly it is a bit late to help with my old battery.

introduction Microsoft Office - Free Alternatives
Ishayin replied to cucubits's topic in General Software
I actually have long preferred LibreOffice Writer over MSWord going back to a decade or more ago when I found it to be the better choice for doing my thesis due to having better features and functionality that I needed. I also like the LibreOffice suite in general, and particularly for including Draw, which is quite useful for simple vector graphics, and diagrams etc. which Microsoft has no equivalent to. I would say that I have still on occasion marginally preferred Excel over Calc (at least 2007 version... the newer Office365 versions are a PITA), but only for a couple of very minor points that are likely irrelevant if it's only for more basic usage. Another one I also tried out many years ago and thought was "OK" is WPS Office (formerly known as Kingsoft Office). I don't remember much about it, but I think at least at that time it might have tried to replicate the MS Office style more, and therefore might be more accessible to new users. Though even my mother has been an OpenOffice / LibreOffice user for many years now, so if she can manage with it, well.. 😉- 18 replies
