Ha yeah, I am the same in that regard. I feel like I will probably still prefer Cinnamon too, but curious to try Plasma all the same. I find all those geeky arguments over GUI vs. CLI totally inane. The best UI is no UI at all*, and if it must exist then it should be as transparent and frictionless as possible. It's like the choice of font when reading a book, you know it's good when you don't notice it at all. It's only when you are forced to really "see" it that you know it's been poorly chosen, as with the little details you mention. They may seem small, but they are not if they distract from the task at hand. A good example is the one post Windows 7(?) change I've never been able to undo or get used to which is the border spacing they added to the context menu that you get when you right-click on active programs in the task bar. In older Windows versions the "Close window" option at the bottom of this list would pop-up right under your mouse cursor as soon as you opened the menu. But with the added border now you have to move your mouse substantially upwards between the right click to open the menu, and the left click to close the window. It's makes the whole process so much more sluggish as to be almost impractical (never mind injurious to my wrist). * I.e. With digital systems, anything you do regularly should be done by simply pressing a button. There is nothing quicker and more efficient than that. Whether you are typing out commands in a CLI, or navigating through a GUI, if you ever find yourself carrying out a repeatable sequence regularly, then you have really missed out on the whole point of computer automation IMO.

https://www.w3schools.com/html/html_favicon.asp I would just go for a simple little .svg icon of a laptop myself. Probably there are loads of free to use examples around. Or someone could have fun making their own using something like Inkscape, Boxy SVG, or favicon.cc for super simple.

I was wondering if you can manually set a different channel at the client end to see if that helps. That link says not in Windows 10 for device to device / ad-hoc networks, but not clear if you can otherwise (I think the channel is usually set by the router). Though it does say you can switch the preferred band between 2.4 and 5 GHz, so that could be worth a try to see if one or the other works better for you.

Thanks for all the great feedback! I have HWInfo ok for monitoring and logs so will look into that sometime for figuring out power draw. Might have to wait a couple of months now as will be busy with a trip visiting family etc. for the next while. The only voltage adjustment I can see is an Over Voltage slider under P0 with a minimum and default at 0 mV, and going up to +25 mV. So no undervolt potential it seems. -
No worries, and thanks! I've been watching some Linux videos of late and that's the same impression I got from them. I would like to get a cheap second-hand lighter laptop / netbook sometime for shorter trips and then try out a few different distros on it, with Mint and Zorin being top of the list. Looks great! KDE Plasma was the biggest surprise to me on looking into Linux again since last trying out a few distributions 9 years ago now . Back then KDE was so ugly I dismissed it as an option immediately (and Mint was the only OS where everything worked right away, and Cinnamon the only DE I liked). But now Plasma looks really beautiful and highly configurable too. How do you find it compared to Cinnamon?

It's a great step forward, but looking at those notes I think I'll wait until 5.9.1 before updating my system. Really looking forward to native opus support with that to replace the third party plugin I use for it currently (which is good but not quite perfect).

Yeah, I have heard from others that it's really more orientated towards being a second device that devs can start using as a platform to do more work towards pushing mobile Linux forwards, and not so great as your main daily driver.

It turns out mucking around with Nvidia Inspector in a casual manner while writing a reply to a forum post is not a good idea(!)... so I now have to write this all out a second time... XD I tried disabling display scaling and it made no difference at all. But not big deal, is only a very minor visual glitch with the sensor read-outs. I meant in the sensor monitoring display panel. If you right-click on the graphs and select "Monitors>", you can select which data to display. None of the power related options display anything at all for me. So I guess those read-outs are not available for this system as with the temperature and fan control options. This is great info thank you! Is there any way to see or set/limit which power state you are in? In P0, for base clock offset I can only go down to -135MHz minimum.. so nowhere close to 810 MHz! Maybe Prema mod gives you more leeway with that? And yeah, looks like the stock voltage is 1.2V. Anyway, and most importantly, do you need to test the stability of these settings for each of the power states? And if so, how do you go about forcing a particular power state to be active to test it? OK, so this is where it went wrong for me. From previous playing around I was assuming that "Apply defaults", sets everything back to default... Was playing around with the different clock sliders to double check ranges and increments and then went to click "Apply defaults" as I had done before no issue, but this time, instant reboot! So I'm only wondering now whether having a different power state selected can change anything here, like it tries to apply the selected power state? If not, then I guess I must have just hit the "Apply Clocks and Voltage" button beside it by mistake. I'm getting old!! π Wow, that is a big saving. How are you measuring/monitoring that?? -
Nice! Hadn't come across that before. What ping do you have to their nearest data centre? Also, interesting to think about what the cost comparison should be to... GPU or maybe an eGPU box(?) and how many years of service it takes to balance out. Unless the free 1-Hour session GTX 1060 level suffices for your needs? Can you simply stop the session and immediately start a new one? https://www.nvidia.com/en-gb/geforce-now/memberships/ https://www.nvidia.com/en-gb/geforce-now/system-reqs/ https://www.nvidia.com/en-gb/geforce-now/faq/

After a bit of searching around I finally found the developers home page and direct download link for it as follows: https://orbmu2k.de/tools/nvidia-inspector-tool http://download.orbmu2k.de/files/nvidiaInspector.zip The sensor monitoring doesn't seem to display so well on my monitor with the lower portion of the text cut-off by the borders between the different segments. Also, none of the three power monitoring options show anything, and the first "Power and Temperature Target" slider (supposed to be power?) in the overclocking section is greyed out. Thanks! How do you set a particular clock? I can only see options for offsetting them. The other setting I wondered about was what happens if I just set the temperature target to the lowest it will go (64Β°C), though I'm not sure that will achieve much considering the highest GPU temperature I can generate in casual usage is only 53Β°C (by keeping the clock at max by jumping back and forth constantly on the timeline of a 4k video). Anyway, so looking at all the numbers here I'm not sure if there is much to be gained really. Do you have any idea on the power savings your settings deliver? And thanks again! That sounds fancy and modern compared to my 368.22 lol. Do the XG drivers have any particular advantage compared to installing with NVCleanstall? -

Ishayin replied to raptorddd's topic in General Discussion
Oh wow, that sounds like just what I need! Did you have to do much testing to determine the lowest safe level like with undervolting the CPU, or is there a low enough level that would be considered safe enough without having to do much testing? I'm very limited for "doing things" capability these days unfortunately... I still haven't even managed to update my GPU driver which I've been meaning to do for years now (so any recommendations on best driver for 980m also appreciated). -
I noticed Linus connects to a Thunderbolt eGPU in the above video from jaybee, and it looks like they do indeed support Thunderbolt 4, just perhaps not able to advertise it yet: https://community.frame.work/t/thunderbolt-4/255/20 More discussion here: https://community.frame.work/t/4-thunderbolt-ports-on-the-model-40gbps-on-each-port/1779

I was thinking of starting a thread on this with all the talk over BGA/socketed and upgradeability, so happy to find someone already did! I suppose that even if it's not socketed, being able to easily swap out the mainboard for a CPU upgrade is better than most laptops these days. I found a discussion on their forums about this point here: https://community.frame.work/t/put-the-cpu-on-a-different-pcb-than-the-rest-of-the-mainboard/20701 Overall, I think it's an interesting approach but still not quite mature enough to be fully tempting yet. My main issue with it is that you only get four expansion card slots to work with at any one time, which seems far too limited to me considering they have to cover all of your interface ports, as well as storage expansion, and you need to dedicate one of those for the USB-C charging: https://frame.work/gb/en/marketplace/expansion-cards So I very much agree with what @Sandy Bridge says above. I might be interested if they ever do a beefier version with more expandability in the future.

Upgraded Laptops by forum users (work in progress)

Maybe worth updating the thread title and the other one (#205) to indicate that they are about replacing the GPU and screen respectively? -

I've also been thinking that an eGPU could be a nice option for me in the future. I mean I rarely game anymore, and even less when travelling, so it would be nice to have the dedicated GPU in a separate box I can just leave behind for lighter transport. And also allows for better cooling for both GPU and CPU. I guess in most cases you also need a separate monitor to go with it, or are there eGPU solutions that allow for say a mux switch connection back into the laptops own built-in display? -
Ah nooo, Panda brings back so many nightmares! It was brought in where I worked some years ago and brought all of our machines to a grinding halt. It made my laptop regularly unusable and often gave me BSOD crashes on top of that until I simply refused to use it any longer. Another colleague switched to Linux to avoid it. I guess it is likely better nowadays, but those memories are burnt way too deep in my soul to ever give it a second chance π I used Avira for a time around that period when it was still good, but then it went downhill and now I just use the default Windows Defender with TinyWall added on top. I feel like AV is the least important component of security in any case. Certainly not worth sacrificing much performance or power for.

I agree with the first few. 95 was a bit painful, but hard to say what the comparison should be here. Loved 98. XP was fine once you got over the slightly silly design style, and 2000 was the best for a long time (I think it might have had the best Explorer copying menu options of any Windows version ever??). And ME is that which should not be mentioned. But, personally I thought Vista was grand once it got to SP2 (though I remember sharing folders between XP and Vista being a PITA). 7 was stable enough I guess, but just too slow, and the first to start down the path of grouping windows by default which I hate. 8.1 is so much better once you've spent a few minutes fixing the UI (and not that much more than was required on 7 really), and it's been all downhill from there. I still struggle to understand what people like so much about 10? DX12?? Windows XP vs Vista vs 7 vs 8.1 vs 10 | Speed Test https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Gc2Vqe6G_AQ (I have seen that in many artificial benchmarks you get a much more even split of results between 8.1 and 10 than the more real world tests shown here).

I've never used Nvidia Inspector, but since I have no way of utilising the integrated graphics on my laptop with a 980m, I was wondering if there is much power saving benefits that could be extracted from it with undervolting or limiting clocks? Or does the GPU firmware already do a decent job with power efficiency when under lighter loads? I can't really play games with my current health, so not really making much use of it. And my electricity prices have recently gone up by a factor of 3x, so need to save every Watt I can πΎ -

Meh... I rather agree with the sentiments expressed in this article: https://www.extremetech.com/computing/337005-researchers-found-an-unpatchable-security-flaw-in-apples-m1-and-you-probably-dont-need-to-care The amount of energy and drama expended seems out of proportion to the actual risks, and mainly only serves to keep IT professionals and tech writers employed as far as I can see. How many people do you know who have been impacted by any of these things? Over the entirety of the past decade, I know one person who got a minor virus, one person who was targeted by a social hack with no ill-results, and two people who have had their WhatsApp accounts hacked (and well, if you're still using WhatsApp, lol...). Social engineering is by far the most common form of attack these days, and renders most of the underlying technical issues completely moot.

Wow, never heard of that 'Modern Standby' crap before. Is that on by default in Windows 10?? Scary to think of how much power is being wasted across the globe with that one. At the same time, who leaves their laptop in standby for days at a time?? If I'm going to be away from it for more than an hour or so I'll just go with hibernate, and always shutdown overnight. The difference in start up vs. wake up time even with opening all programs again is barely a few seconds. And you still end up in all cases stuck waiting for the internet to reconnect which Windows has always been stupidly slow with. Also, looks like it is possible to get OpenShell working ok with WIndows 11: https://gitq.com/passionate-coder/Classic-Start/topics/19/open-shell-vs-windows-11 https://www.tomshardware.com/how-to/windows-11-replace-start-menu https://github.com/valinet/ExplorerPatcher
